Saelunith glanced behind her at the seemingly endless gathering of spirit women. The same mixture of worry and determination filled their eyes.
"Spirit Sovereign, I need you to understand that if you die attempting this, all of us will die with you." She gestured toward the women behind her. "Every spirit connected to this realm will share your fate."
The multicolored light of the Spirit Realm reflected within Saelunith’s gemstone-like eyes, revealing the strength of her determination. Max understood what she was placing in his hands, though the dark and empty heart inside his chest offered no response.
"I understand."
Max rested his palm atop her head, gently brushing her hair as several blue strands slipped between his fingers and fell across her cheek.
"I want you to live."
His fingers moved from her hair and brushed against her cheek. Saelunith leaned into his touch, feeling the roughness of his skin and the coldness of his hand, yet the movement itself remained gentle. It carried a protective promise his silent heart could no longer express.
"That is why I won’t fail. You’re my family. Every single one of you."
Max looked beyond her for a moment, imagining the distant walls of Blackspire and everyone waiting for him inside Voidstar.
"So guide me, and I will come out victorious."
"All right." Saelunith remained against his palm for several breaths before answering. "I will help you."
"Thank you."
The words sounded cold, yet every spirit woman felt the will carried within them. Something passed through their bodies and gathered inside their chests, allowing them to understand the gratitude Max could no longer express.
Neither he nor Saelunith moved for some time.
Eventually, she pulled away from his hand and placed her palm against the center of his chest.
"Follow my instructions, Spirit Sovereign."
A mysterious pulse passed beneath Max’s skin and spread through his body before wrapping itself around his void heart.
"Feel your Magic Soul," Saelunith instructed. "Search for the connection between it, your body and the magic flowing through you."
Max closed his eyes and attempted to follow her guidance, but the only thing he could clearly sense was the endless hunger within his chest.
"What connection?"
A soft smile appeared on Saelunith’s lips.
"You still have much to learn about the true nature of magic, Spirit Sovereign."
Another powerful pulse surged through Max’s body. His muscles stiffened as his head was thrown backward, and unfamiliar energy forced its way into his mind.
The citadel vanished within a spiral of colors.
When Max opened his eyes, he found himself standing alone in a vast field covered with crimson lilies. The flowers moved beneath a gentle breeze, filling the air with their sweet scent as a brilliant sun shone from the cloudless sky and warmed his skin.
The day appeared almost unnaturally perfect.
Max attempted to move, but the body refused to obey him. He could not speak, lift his arms or even turn his head. It took him only a moment to understand that the body standing within the field did not belong to him.
He was merely an observer, watching a memory through the eyes of someone else.
"Spirit Sovereign!"
A cheerful voice came from behind him. The body turned on its own, allowing Max to see a young woman approaching through the flowers.
He had never seen her before.
Her pale skin stood out against the countless colors surrounding her. Her long hair shifted between shades of blue, purple and gold whenever it caught the sunlight, while the same otherworldly colors moved within her eyes.
"Aria..." the man whispered.
His voice was deep and warm, completely different from the coldness that now followed Max’s every word.
"What are you doing here all alone, big brother?" Aria asked as she circled him playfully. "Are you hiding something from me again? Do I need to search your sleeves and find out whether you kept any sweets for yourself?"
She rose onto her tiptoes and attempted to slip her fingers beneath his sleeves.
"Fine, fine. I may have kept one for you, but don’t tell the others." The former Spirit Sovereign reached beneath his robes. "We wouldn’t want the spirits to believe I have a favorite."
He produced a round, multicolored candy attached to a small white stick.
Max immediately recognized its resemblance to a lollipop from Earth.
John, the man who later inherited part of the Spirit Sovereign’s will, had also come from Max’s original world. Seeing such a familiar object within the memories of the first Sovereign could have been nothing more than a coincidence, but it planted a quiet suspicion inside Max.
Perhaps the connection between the three of them ran deeper than he had realized.
Aria snatched the candy before the former Sovereign could change his mind.
"As nimble as a rabbit," he whispered, a faint smile appearing on his lips.
"Swo, wat aw yoo dooin ow hwe, bwig bwo?" Aria asked around the candy, her words muffled as she moved several steps away, protecting it as though he might attempt to steal it back.
"I’m contemplating nature. It is the source of life within this realm and the foundation from which our power is born." The former Sovereign looked across the field of crimson lilies. "If I can understand nature itself, I may be able to reach beyond the limits imposed by mana. Perhaps I could even..."
His voice trailed off.
The former Sovereign fell into deep thought, and the world around him seemed to disappear from his awareness. Aria poked his side and even attempted to tickle him, but he did not react.
He stood as firmly as a mountain, his mind temporarily separated from the world and the emotions surrounding him.
"He’s doing it again..." Aria sighed.
The playfulness gradually disappeared from her expression.
"I hope you know what you’re doing, brother. If I were to lose you as well, I don’t think I would have any reason to remain in this cruel world."
She turned and walked away, but the lightness had vanished from her steps.
The former Sovereign remained within the field.
Time inside the memory began moving differently. The sun crossed the sky and disappeared beyond the horizon, only to rise again moments later. Days passed, followed by weeks, months, and eventually years.
Max could not tell whether he was witnessing the true passage of time or a memory compressed into a single moment. He could only remain inside the former Sovereign and observe what the man had once experienced.
As their connection deepened, fragments of the Sovereign’s thoughts began reaching him.
Max looked across the same field and attempted to understand nature as the man had. Seasons passed over the land. Flowers and grass emerged from the soil in spring before withering in autumn. Animals crossed the field alone, only to return years later with their young. Those young eventually matured, found mates of their own, and continued the same cycle.
Mana existed within every part of it.
It passed through roots buried beneath the soil, flowed within the blood of magical creatures, and gathered inside every breath they took. It influenced how quickly they grew, how long they survived, and what they eventually became.
Years turned into decades.
Max gradually lost all sense of time as he stared toward the distant horizon, sharing the former Sovereign’s endless observation of the world. He began noticing the differences between how each living creature responded to mana. Some used it to strengthen their bodies, while others unconsciously absorbed it to survive changes within their environments.
Even the crimson lilies began to transform.
At first, only a few petals developed thin lines of blue. As more mana gathered inside them, the color spread farther until several flowers no longer resembled the crimson lilies from which they had grown.
Life was not merely receiving mana.
It was responding to it, adapting to it, and using it to become something new.
Something shifted inside Max’s Magic Soul as the meaning of what he had witnessed finally began taking shape.
Then, after decades spent staring at the same field, understanding struck him.
"So you noticed it as well."
The moment the former Sovereign spoke directly to him, an unseen power wrapped around Max’s consciousness.
"I have been waiting for you, my future inheritor." The man smiled as though their meeting had been decided long before Max was born. "Although I had hoped you would find some peace within the darkness you carry."
Max attempted to answer, but his entire essence suddenly shifted. The field of lilies disappeared, and when his vision returned, he was no longer trapped inside the former Sovereign’s body. He now stood before the man he had accompanied through decades of silent contemplation.
"I need to form a Mana Heart," Max said, his face carrying no emotion.
"Getting straight to the point, are we?"
The former Sovereign raised his hand and flicked one finger toward Max’s chest.
A violent force seized Max’s void heart. He felt it being torn from his body, yet no wound appeared as an unstable orb of darkness emerged from his chest and landed within the Sovereign’s palm.
Max remained alive, but his cold gaze followed the heart now spinning above the man’s palm.
"Don’t look at me like that," the former Sovereign said. "I’m only borrowing it."
