Supreme Bloodline Evolution System

Chapter 248: The Creator’s Importance

"Why am I still alive?"

Max narrowed his eyes as he studied the former Spirit Sovereign with amazement and suspicion. His void heart remained above the man’s palm, spinning like an unstable orb of darkness and swallowing every trace of light that approached it.

"Because you are not physically here," the former Sovereign answered. "Only your consciousness entered this memory. I could tear you apart a hundred times, and your real body would remain unharmed."

He raised the void heart closer to his face and examined it from several directions, showing no concern when the darkness stretched toward his fingers.

"That hardly matters right now. This heart is magnificent." His smile widened as the darkness curled around his hand. "It is violent, far too hungry for its own good and darker than anything I encountered during my lifetime, yet I can still recognize the touch of its creator. Only one person could have made something like this."

The former Sovereign looked directly at Max. "How is she? Still wandering through outer space?"

Max clenched his fists. The man spoke as though the System Creator were an old acquaintance he had not seen in years.

"Who are you talking about?"

"Do you really need to ask? I can feel her aura clinging to your soul, system holder."

The former Sovereign lowered himself into a graceful bow, causing his long golden hair to spill over his shoulders and nearly touch the ground. When he raised his head again, the light moving within his sun-like eyes made it difficult to believe that he had ever been human, yet Max felt more certain than ever that the man standing before him had once come from the same place he had.

"You’re from Earth," Max said. "Did she bring you into this world as well?"

"Correct."

"Then tell me how to kill her."

The former Sovereign stared at him for a moment before releasing a quiet laugh. "You truly hate her that much?"

"Give me one reason why I should allow her to live."

"Because the Creator is not merely another powerful woman you can kill and forget about." The humor left the man’s face as he continued examining the darkness. "Her existence is connected to the life of this universe. None of us fully understand what would happen if she died, but entire worlds may collapse with her, and everyone you have ever cared about could perish long before you felt any satisfaction from taking her life."

Rosalia and Agnia appeared within Max’s thoughts, followed by Clotilde, his unborn children and the countless people living within Voidstar. His heart offered no fear at the thought of losing them, but he understood what their deaths would mean.

"Shit..." Max muttered. "That means I really do have to save that bitch."

"Save her?" The former Sovereign’s eyebrows rose, his interest in the void heart briefly forgotten.

"She is trapped somewhere. I don’t know where or what is holding her, but she needs me to free her."

The man’s attention returned to the heart. "Then she created this because she finally encountered something she could not escape on her own."

"Can you help me reach her?"

"I cannot help you find a prison I know nothing about, but if she needs you badly enough to place this power inside your chest, then you may be far more important to her than she has allowed you to believe."

"I already know that."

"Then why waste your time asking me how to kill her? First discover what was powerful enough to trap her and why she believes you can succeed where she failed."

"That answer can wait. I came here to create a Mana Heart."

"Yes, you did." The former Sovereign lifted the unstable heart between them. "Before I teach you how to create another one, I need to discover whether this darkness is capable of sharing your body."

"And if it isn’t?"

"Then I will make it learn."

The former Sovereign gathered multicolored mana above his other palm until it formed a sphere no larger than a marble. When he brought it close, the darkness leaped from the void heart and swallowed the sphere before Max could follow its movement.

"Hungry little thing, isn’t it?" the man muttered.

"Wait."

Max focused upon the heart and searched for the mana it had consumed. He could still sense it somewhere inside the darkness, buried so deeply that even the smallest trace appeared ready to vanish. He reached for it with his will and commanded the heart to release what it had taken, but nothing answered him until a thin stream of multicolored magic finally escaped and gathered above the former Sovereign’s palm.

Its colors appeared brighter than before, while every impurity previously hidden inside it had disappeared.

The former Sovereign examined the returned mana, and the smile slowly left his face. "So the Creator has learned a few new tricks since my time."

"My void purifies whatever it consumes," Max said. "I already knew that."

"You knew it could purify mana. What you never understood was how that purification could help you create something the void would not immediately destroy." The man guided the magic around his fingers before returning it toward the void heart. This time, the darkness bent around it without attacking. "The void separates the mana, removes its impurities and allows you to call the rest back. More importantly, the returned mana now carries the presence of your heart."

"Meaning the void recognizes it as mine."

"Exactly. That may be enough to keep it from devouring the Mana Heart before it can form."

The former Sovereign released the purified mana and watched it circle the darkness without being attacked. He appeared pleased by the result, though a trace of uncertainty remained within his eyes.

"I have never handled a void heart like this before, so I cannot promise it will behave the same way once mana begins gathering inside your real body. However, forcing two opposing powers together would certainly kill you. This method at least gives you a chance."

"What do we do?"

"You allow the void to consume the mana required for the second heart, then pull it back before the darkness buries it beyond your reach. Once that purified mana returns, Saelunith and the other spirits will shape it beside your existing heart."

"What if the void refuses to release enough?"

"Well... We may as well force it to obey. After all, it belongs inside your body, so remind it who that body belongs to."

"How much mana will the process require?"

"More than Saelunith can provide alone. Every spirit still connected to the Spirit Realm will need to lend you part of her power, and each of them will remain connected to that magic until the Mana Heart is complete."

Max remembered the women kneeling inside the citadel. "If the new heart collapses, the void will reach them through that connection."

"It will drain the spirits first, followed by their realm and eventually the world outside. Once the hunger begins spreading from one spirit to another, even you may not be able to stop it."

"Then I won’t allow it to spread."

The former Sovereign watched him in silence before shaking his head. "You truly are an unpleasant man to warn."

"I have already heard the consequences. Repeating them will not change my answer."

"Of course it won’t." The former Sovereign lifted the void heart toward Max’s chest. "There is one more thing you should know before I return this. Forming the Mana Heart may help restore what the void has suppressed, but your emotions will not simply return the moment it begins beating."

"Why?"

"Your emotions were never stored inside the physical heart. They belong to your soul, and your soul still remembers them, even if this darkness has buried the connection beneath its hunger. If the Mana Heart nourishes that part of you, your emotions may gradually return, though I cannot know what will surface first or whether you will be prepared for it."

"It doesn’t matter."

The former Sovereign gave him a long look before pressing the unstable orb against his chest. Darkness spread across Max’s body as the void heart sank through his flesh and returned to the place from which it had been taken, bringing pain so violent that his consciousness began to collapse around him.

The former Sovereign caught him by the shoulder before the field could disappear completely.

"When you awaken, tell Saelunith that the second heart must be formed from mana purified by the void. The knowledge she still possesses will be enough once she understands that. And do not fight the hunger when the process begins," the man continued, tightening his grip on Max’s shoulder. "Let the void consume the mana, keep hold of everything it takes and force it to give that power back before it disappears beyond your reach."

Max opened his eyes inside the ancient citadel, where Saelunith still had her palm pressed against his chest while the spirit women watched him in silence.

His void heart released a heavy beat beneath her hand.

"Gather everyone," Max said. "I know how to begin."
