Heat rose from within Max’s body, rushing through his veins like lava before spreading toward his organs and setting him on fire from the inside. The pain struck every part of him at once, yet beneath it, Max could feel the two hearts moving.
The void heart and the incomplete Mana Heart began spinning around one another. The void pulled at the new heart, repeatedly reaching toward it as though determined to consume it, while the Mana Heart repelled the darkness and restored every fragment torn away from its incomplete structure.
Neither could overpower the other, forcing the two opposing hearts to coexist within the chaos.
Their movement grew faster until a mana vortex formed inside Max’s chest. Everything released by the void heart was dragged into the violent rotation, creating a mass of refined mana that rushed toward his Magic Soul.
The former structure of his Magic Soul had already collapsed beneath the pressure, but instead of being destroyed, it was reborn as a raging blaze.
The invisible mana poured into the flames as though attempting to swallow them, but instead of extinguishing the fire, it only made it burn stronger. Every wave became more fuel, causing the newly ascended Magic Soul to expand while the pressure inside Max’s body continued increasing.
For several moments, no one outside could see anything beyond the flash of multicolored light that had swallowed the sky.
When the brilliance finally began fading, those who had survived long enough to witness the transformation looked upward and saw Max shining in both white light and darkness. Brilliant white mana covered one half of his body, while the other remained hidden beneath the black power of the void, splitting his dragon hybrid form between two forces that should never have been able to exist together.
Lucius stumbled to a stop and stared back at Max, his jaw slowly falling open as recognition replaced the terror within his eyes.
"That’s... That’s Magic Soul Ascension," he said, struggling to force the words from his throat. "Only when a Magic Soul becomes strong enough does it burst into flames and become a true source of mana. The only people who have ever reached that realm within our lands were Emperor Augustus and his late grandfather..."
He had witnessed things that should have been impossible before, yet the man floating above the ruined empire continued turning everything Lucius understood about magic upside down. Max had already returned from death, created a second heart beside the void and devastated an entire region while three of the empire’s strongest warriors could do nothing but watch.
Now, he was undergoing the same ascension that had once allowed Augustus to rise beyond every other warrior within the Imperial Court Empire.
"It’s fine, isn’t it?" Cassian asked as he seized Lucius by the shoulder, his fingers tightening against the golden armor. The discipline that had guided him through countless battles finally gave way beneath his desperation, leaving him clinging to the younger man for the answer he needed to hear. "Our emperor is still several realms above that. Once he returns, he can kill that scum."
Lucius looked toward the hand gripping his shoulder before slowly raising his eyes to Cassian. For a moment, his lips moved without producing any sound, and then he shook his head.
Cassian’s expression stiffened as his heart sank.
"By the time the emperor returns, there might not be anyone left for him to rule," Lucius answered. His gaze moved across the dead forests, empty rivers and pale fields that had once sustained countless people. "Our only chance is for the Crimson Horde emperor to come to our aid before then, but counting on that..."
His voice gradually faded.
The smile that appeared upon Lucius’s face could no longer truly be called a smile. His lips twisted without any amusement as the remaining color drained from his skin, while his eyes became strangely calm, as though he had already abandoned every hope of escaping what was coming.
"Get yourselves together. This is pathetic."
Valeria rushed back toward Cassian and Lucius, even though she had been the one to flee the farthest when Max’s transformation began. Her face remained tense as she moved between the two men, who still stared toward the divided light filling the sky as though they had already accepted their deaths.
"If we die here, we will never have the chance to take revenge on him later," she snapped. "Waiting around and expecting someone else to save us is pathetic in itself. Now move, you fools!"
Valeria seized both men by their armor and shoved them forward. Cassian stumbled beneath the sudden force, while Lucius nearly lost his balance before recovering and continuing to run.
"Help... Please..."
A young Imperial warrior lay upon the dead ground behind them, reaching one trembling hand toward Valeria as the strength continued leaving his body. His terrified eyes silently begged the three commanders not to abandon him within the range of Max’s transformation.
Valeria glanced over her shoulder and clicked her tongue.
She did not slow down.
The hope within the young man’s eyes faded as he watched his commanders disappear into the distance without looking back. The same realization spread among the many warriors who had failed to escape in time.
Some screamed after them, while others used what little strength remained in their bodies to crawl across the lifeless ground. None moved quickly enough to escape whatever was about to happen.
However, while those watching Max feared or praised the power surrounding him, Max himself found it impossible to accept such a sudden increase in strength so easily.
Every cell within his body screamed in pain.
The flames surrounding his newly ascended Magic Soul spread toward his Mana Container, filling everything between them with unbearable heat. The Mana Container attempted to absorb the approaching fire as it would any other magic, but even its vast capacity could not contain a power it did not yet understand.
Instead of disappearing, the flames spread into the Mana Container as well.
Max released a painful shriek as another wave of heat tore through his body. The strength holding him in the sky vanished, and he began falling before he could regain control.
He crashed toward the ground like a meteor.
The impact tore open the dead earth as soil and broken stone exploded in every direction, leaving a massive crater beneath him. Dust rose around Max’s body while the black and white power covering him continued burning through everything it touched.
"S-System..." Max called out through clenched teeth.
Silence followed.
No screen appeared before his eyes, and the familiar voice of the System Creator did not answer him.
"Fuck... I need help with this." Max forced his bloodshot eyes open as anger toward the Creator pushed through the pain. "Are you seriously rebelling against me right now and still expecting me to help you in the future?"
Nothing responded.
"Fine!" Max roared toward the sky as he pushed one clawed hand against the bottom of the crater. "Then let this prove that I can do it without you, if that is what you wish!"
Black and white power erupted from his body and divided the sky above him. One side shone with brilliant light, while the other disappeared beneath the darkness of the void. The sight could be witnessed from kilometers away, warning everyone who looked toward the region that something unnatural was being born within it.
Inside Max’s chest, the two hearts continued spinning around one another.
Their speed increased until neither could have been followed by human eyes, even if someone had somehow looked directly inside his body. The force created between them pulled upon every part of Max, spreading the combined pressure of the void heart and Mana Heart through his flesh.
The veins that had once connected his body solely to the void heart began tearing away from it.
In their place, translucent vessels spread from the vortex throughout Max’s body, reaching into his muscles, organs, Mana Container and Magic Soul. They absorbed power from both rotating hearts and carried it into every part of him, allowing neither the void nor the Mana Heart to claim his body alone.
As the vessels completed their connection, the final incomplete runes surrounding the Mana Heart ignited one after another.
The second heart released its first true beat.
It had finally formed.
White mana surged from the completed Mana Heart while darkness erupted from the void heart beside it. Both powers entered the translucent vessels and spread throughout Max’s body, joining the flames released by his ascended Magic Soul.
He could not tell whether the process was destroying his body or rebuilding it into something stronger. Flesh, magic and mana were being forced together beneath a heat that refused to weaken, reshaping everything the two hearts touched.
Like a weapon placed inside a furnace, Max was being forged by the fire consuming him from within.
However, the evolution reshaping Max’s body would soon face its first threat.
Far in the distance, a crimson streak split the sky and rushed toward Max at a terrifying speed, shaking every mountain it passed. The force of its approach spread across the land long before the figure itself could be seen.
Max remained unaware of what was coming, his entire concentration consumed by the transformation tearing through his body. However, the moment Cassian, Lucius and Valeria felt the familiar aura, the despair vanished from their faces and their eyes lit up with joy.
