"You’re alive? Wonderful!" An excited voice thundered across the ruined lands. "Ever since our last meeting, I have been eager to fight you, Maximus!"
The shout crashed against the black and multicolored power surrounding Max, causing it to tremble around his body. He immediately recognized the voice, but the man had arrived during the most crucial stage of his evolution, when even the slightest disturbance could throw the two hearts out of balance and destroy everything he had worked hard for.
A bulky figure emerged from the crimson storm, his enormous body surrounded by enough power to make the ground crack beneath him. Dust swirled around him as the pressure of his magical aura spread across the surrounding region.
Max’s void heart responded to the hatred rising within him with a heavy beat.
"Crimson Horde Emperor..." Max growled.
His claws pierced his palms as he clenched both fists. He still remembered the weight of the man’s foot pressing his head into the mud, along with the laughter and humiliation that followed. The emperor had treated him like an insect whose life could be taken or spared according to his mood.
That memory would never fade until Max had repaid everything done to him.
Even though his evolution had not yet ended and the connection between his two hearts remained unstable, his body itched with the desire to attack. Every instinct urged him to tear his attention away from the transformation and attack the man who had once looked down upon him, even though losing control for a single moment could destroy everything forming inside his body.
The emperor noticed the hatred within Max’s eyes.
It resembled the gaze of a starving tiger confronted by a beast several times its size. Max understood the difference between their strength, yet there was no submission within him. He looked prepared to attack even if doing so killed him.
Such madness should have appeared foolish, but it earned a trace of respect from the emperor.
The corners of the man’s lips rose into a wide smirk as the crimson dust finally settled around him.
"You may call me Aragon," he declared, spreading his arms as though introducing himself before an entire world rather than a single enemy. "Slayer of dragons and lowly beasts alike."
His arrogance pushed Max to the limits of his restraint.
Without relinquishing control over the ongoing transformation, Max commanded both hearts to release whatever power he could spare. Darkness erupted from the Void Heart while multicolored magic surged from the Spirit Sovereign’s Mana Heart beside it, racing through the newly formed vessels before bursting from his body.
The two forces rushed beside one another, twisting into a dark and multicolored wave that tore through the crater and swept across the ruined land.
It crashed against Aragon like an approaching tide, swallowing his bulky figure beneath two powers that should never have been released together.
"Strong!" Aragon roared as the opposing wave crashed against him. "But is that all you have? If so, I will be disappointed!"
Crimson magic exploded from his body in every direction, tearing apart the wave before spreading across the ruined region. Powerful winds struck Max and forced him backward through the crater, his feet carving trenches across the broken ground as he crossed both arms in front of his face.
He could barely remain standing beneath such overwhelming pressure, yet even the crimson winds were unable to extinguish the flames burning around his body and within it.
His Magic Soul responded to the new threat. The flames that had spread throughout his Magic Soul and all of his internal organs suddenly contracted before surging inward and gathering around a single point within his Magic Soul.
A small bead began forming at the center of the blaze.
It was as black as night, with countless runes carved across its surface and glowing from within. Together, they formed the same pattern that had once covered his soul, containing both the rune Max had drawn himself and every additional rune he had absorbed from the Magic Awakening Altar.
The flames continued pressing against the bead, forcing its incomplete shape to become denser with every passing moment.
As soon as it fully appeared, the void heart and Mana Heart released a heavy beat at the same time.
The impact spread through the translucent vessels connecting them to the rest of Max’s body, causing his knees to weaken as he staggered beneath the pressure.
Aragon raised an eyebrow when he noticed the change.
Instead of attacking, the Crimson Horde Emperor remained where he stood and sensed the increasing power. The smile across his face slowly became more sinister and excited.
The three Imperial Court commanders hurried toward Aragon while the remaining soldiers continued fleeing in every direction. Their faces appeared ashen as they felt Max’s magical power rising again.
"Emperor of the Crimson Horde, what are you doing?" Valeria called out as she dropped to one knee before him. Her head lowered out of respect, but her eyes remained fixed upon Aragon’s face, desperately searching for an agreement she did not find. "Quickly finish him before his transformation is completed!"
"Please, you must hurry!" Lucius added as he knelt beside her. He looked toward Max as though he were watching a demon being born from the flames. "His power has continued increasing since he arrived. If you allow him to complete this evolution, none of us know what will become of these lands."
Aragon showed no sign of hearing either of them. Every passing moment brought the evolution closer to its next stage, but the Crimson Horde Emperor seemed more interested in watching it unfold than in preventing it.
Out of three Imperial Court commanders, only Cassian remained standing.
The discipline and refinement that had guided him through countless battles had already been stripped away by everything he had witnessed today.
"What are you waiting for?" Cassian roared, his fear overpowering what little caution remained within him. "Kill him now, or Emperor Augustus will not spare you if your ignorance brings destruction upon the empire!"
Aragon’s smile disappeared in an instant.
"Shut your mouth, insect."
He extended one hand and grabbed Cassian by the face before he could react. Crimson light danced between his fingers, searing the man’s skin and making smoke rise between them.
Cassian screamed as both hands closed around Aragon’s wrist, but he could not move the emperor’s arm even slightly.
Valeria and Lucius lowered their heads. Neither dared interfere or raise their gaze, though the fear widening their eyes made it clear that they understood exactly what was about to happen.
"I will kill whoever I wish and wait for as long as I desire," Aragon said as his fingers slowly tightened around Cassian’s skull. "Who are you to command me? Even Augustus would not dare speak to me with such arrogance, yet one of his insects believes he possesses that right?"
"I... I only meant..."
Aragon closed his hand into a fist.
Cassian’s head burst between his fingers, spraying blood and pieces of flesh across the surrounding ground. His headless body remained standing for a moment before collapsing beside Valeria and Lucius, staining the edges of their golden armor crimson.
Neither commander moved.
Aragon shook the blood from his hand before turning his attention back toward Max, showing no concern for the man he had just killed.
"I came here to fight a true monster, not crush some immortal brat," he continued. "I do not care how many times he can return from death. There is no pleasure in crushing the same helpless ant again and again."
The black bead within Max’s Magic Soul continued drawing power from the surrounding flames, while his two hearts beat together and forced more mana through every vessel within his body.
Aragon’s eyes blazed with excitement.
"Am I wrong, kid?" He called as he spread both arms and allowed his crimson magic to rise around him. "You want a proper fight as much as I do. I can see it in your eyes."
Max’s eyes slowly rose to meet Aragon’s through the flames.
"Then finish your evolution," Aragon roared, his voice shaking the ruined lands. "Become the monster you were meant to be and fight me until only one of us remains breathing!"
As if responding to Aragon’s booming challenge, the flames surrounding Max’s Magic Soul erupted with renewed strength. They gathered beside the already formed black bead and compressed into another solid shape, slowly forming a second bead within the blaze.
This one shone with an icy-purple light, its surface carved with the same complete runic pattern as the black bead beside it.
The two beads floated together within the flames, each holding its own power without weakening the other.
The moment the purple bead finished forming, both of Max’s hearts released another simultaneous beat, sending a fresh surge of mana throughout his body.
Yet even this was not the end.
More and more flames continued gathering around his Magic Soul, and Max could feel that his evolution was far from complete.
