At half past six in the morning, Yang Ping was awakened by the alarm clock.

He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling for a few seconds, as thoughts emerged one after another like a computer booting up. Yang Ping sat up, glanced at Xiao Su who was still sound asleep beside him, and quietly got out of bed.

Yang Ping didn’t rush to respond but instead printed out the abstract and planned to discuss it with Manstein later.

He skimmed through several other emails, some about funding applications, others about academic conferences or collaborative research. He dealt with each email one-by-one, replying where needed, forwarding when necessary, and archiving as required.

After finishing the emails, it was almost eight o’clock.

Yang Ping stood up, stretched his neck, then picked up the case materials from Director He and started flipping through them.

Prominence resection and reconstruction combined with pulmonary artery replacement, the difficulty of this surgery wasn’t in any specific operation but in the accumulation of all the operations. It’s like an acrobat attempting extreme challenges: walking a tightrope is already difficult, but walking a tightrope while spinning a hoop, juggling balls, and riding a unicycle makes each separate action seem manageable on its own, but together they become an ultimate test.

Yang Ping simulated the surgical procedure in his mind.

Starting with the incision, he chose the median sternotomy with a right anterior thoracic incision, providing exposure to the mediastinum and right thoracic cavity with ample operative space. Then comes the exploration to determine the actual extent of the tumor’s invasion. If broader than shown in imaging, the resection scope might need to be expanded, or surgery might need to be abandoned.

If the exploration results were satisfactory, the next step would be handling the blood vessels. Yang Ping’s plan was to first free the superior vena cava, putting on a blocking strap just in case. Then, free the main pulmonary artery trunk and branches of the left and right pulmonary arteries, assessing the required length and angle for the replacement.
