After dealing with the blood vessels, the next step is the excision and reconstruction of the carina. This is the core step of the entire surgery and the part that tests technique the most. The anastomosis of the trachea and primary bronchi must be seamless: it needs to be tight and airtight without any tension. Yang Ping plans to use a ’side-to-end-to-side’ approach — anastomosing the left primary bronchus to the side wall of the trachea, then anastomosing the right primary bronchus to the side wall of the left primary bronchus. This way, all three anastomosis sites have no tension and good blood supply.

Yang Ping kept reading page by page, occasionally writing notes in the manuscript’s blank spaces. Some notes were queries — "This data is mean ± standard deviation; why not report the median and quartiles?" Some were suggestions — "The logic in this section can be refined: first discuss the phenomenon, then the mechanism, and finally the significance." Some were affirmations — "This experiment is well-designed and can serve as a template."

Manstein sat quietly nearby, occasionally sipping from his tea cup. He knows Yang Ping’s habit of reading papers thoroughly without speaking or evaluating until he’s finished. So he waits patiently.

Twenty minutes later, Yang Ping reached the last page.

He put down the paper manuscript and rubbed his eyes.

"How is it?" Manstein eagerly inquired.

"It’s excellent," Yang Ping said, "The data are reliable, the conclusions are reasonable, and the paper is clearly written, but I do have a few questions."

"Go ahead!"

Yang Ping flipped open the manuscript, pointing out his notes one by one.

Manstein listened attentively, nodding and occasionally jotting down essential points in his notebook.

"The issues you mentioned are indeed present," Manstein said, "I can immediately adjust the statistical methods and the paper’s structure, but the mechanism study will take time, at least two months."

"Then take those two months to improve it," Yang Ping said, "We’re not in a rush, take your time."

"Right, slow work yields fine results," Manstein remarked.
