Chapter 2260: Chapter 1466: Major Breakthrough (Part 3)
Yang Ping continued the conversation: "Manstein is right. This also explains why many therapies that work well in the laboratory fail in clinical settings. It’s because we’ve only activated part of the network, while other parts might still be closed. It’s like playing the piano by pressing only one key; there’s sound, but not music."
The sound of note-taking filled the meeting room.
Yang Ping continued: "For the next steps, Manstein will be responsible for clarifying all nodes and connections within the network—we need to understand the network in its entirety. Weber will validate the activation conditions and regulatory mechanisms of the network at the cellular level. Tang Shun will coordinate all work to ensure multi-track progress. Additionally, Lu Xiaolu will look for evidence within clinical data to see if there are clues in existing cases that support this hypothesis."
Everyone nodded simultaneously and quickly started jotting down notes in their notebooks.
The meeting lasted an hour and a half, and it was nearly four o’clock by the time it ended.
Yang Ping didn’t rest and went straight to Neurosurgery.
Lin Xiaoyu’s treatment had been ongoing for two weeks, and this was the first evaluation point. When Yang Ping arrived, Xu Zhiliang was already standing by the viewing lamp, alongside several of the backbone doctors in Neurosurgery and Lin Xiaoyu’s parents.
"Are the images out?" Yang Ping walked over.
Xu Zhiliang nodded without speaking and directly turned on the viewing lamp.
Two MRI scans were hung side by side on the lamp; the left was from two weeks ago when the treatment had just started, and the right was today’s follow-up scan. Yang Ping’s gaze went back and forth between the two scans several times before settling.
The degree of bulging in the brainstem hadn’t deteriorated further; it was essentially stable compared to two weeks ago. More critically, the enhanced signal within the tumor had diminished, indicating reduced blood supply and decreased tumor activity.
"The tumor has shrunk," Yang Ping said, his voice peaceful, yet he felt an indescribable sensation in his heart.
"Shrunk... by approximately... eight percent." Xu Zhiliang pointed to the comparison area on the scans, "The progress is... not significant, but... the direction... is... correct."
Lin Xiaoyu’s father stood nearby, staring intently at the two scans. His hands were trembling slightly, his lips quivered, but he didn’t utter a word. Lin Xiaoyu’s mother had already covered her mouth.
"Professor Yang," Lin Xiaoyu’s father finally spoke, his voice so husky it was barely audible, "Does this mean... it’s effective?"
Yang Ping turned around and looked at him.
"Effective! But it’s not a cure, it’s only initially effective. The tumor has shrunk by eight percent, which means the K Therapy has a suppressive effect on Xiaoyu’s tumor. But this is just the beginning; we need to continue the treatment and keep monitoring. Some people will continue to improve on this basis, while others may stagnate. What we can do now is keep moving forward, taking one step at a time."
Lin Xiaoyu’s father nodded vigorously, eyes red, but he didn’t cry. He reached out and held Yang Ping’s hand tightly, holding it for a long time.
"Thank you, Professor Yang."
Yang Ping said, "Don’t thank me; it’s Xiaoyu’s own body fighting, and we’re just lending a hand."
As they walked out of Neurosurgery, Xu Zhiliang caught up with him.
"Professor, your... hypothesis, I... heard from Tang Shun..." Xu Zhiliang’s speech was slow, but he pronounced each word clearly, "If... it really... is... like this, then... our... understanding of... brainstem... glioma... also... needs... to change."
Yang Ping stopped and looked at him.
"Go on."
"Gliomas... are difficult... to treat because... they’ve... hijacked the... repair programs." Xu Zhiliang used the word "hijacked," and although he spoke haltingly, he got the point across, "The tumor... uses the... signal pathways of... the repair programs... to grow and... evade immunity. K Therapy... is effective because... it... corrects... the hijacked... program."
Yang Ping looked at him, with both surprise and approval in his eyes.
"Your idea is excellent," he said. "It might not only apply to brainstem gliomas but to other types of tumors as well. Write it down and organize it into a perspective article for submission to ’Neurological Tumor.’
Xu Zhiliang was stunned for a moment, then nodded, a hint of a blush appearing on his face.
"Alright, I’ll... try. Shall we continue discussing it on WhatsApp?"
"Yes, let’s continue."
