Yet, Yan Cijin still couldn’t help but worry about Bai Li. The moment she heard those gunshots and saw Bai Li go out alone, her heart had been hanging in the air the whole time. It was not because she thought Bai Li was weak. On the contrary, Bai Li looked calm and capable, the kind of person who could handle herself, but this was still the apocalypse. Even a strong person could run into trouble at any time, and once something happened, there was no going back. That kind of thought kept pressing on Yan Cijin’s chest, making it hard for her to completely settle down.

Yan Laojin, afraid the gunshots would frighten the little girl, had already taken the child back to the bedroom. The little girl was still small, and no matter how brave the adults tried to act, she would not understand why there were sudden loud noises outside. Yan Laojin held her gently and kept telling her not to be scared, that everything was fine, and that the adults were just dealing with something. The little girl blinked her eyes and clutched the corner of his clothes with her tiny hand. She did not cry, but her little face was tense, clearly still a little nervous. Yan Laojin patted her back for a while, and only after she calmed down did he quietly stay with her in the bedroom, not daring to let her hear too much of what was happening outside.

Bai Li thought for a moment and decided to go to the 20th floor. If Hu Xuecheng still had bullets in his house, she couldn’t miss the opportunity. She had found the key on Hu Xuecheng. With a thought, she grabbed her Tang sword and headed up to the twentieth floor. She was moving quickly, but every step was still careful. The corridor was quiet now, and the building had that heavy, dead feeling that always came after gunshots. It was the kind of silence that made people uneasy, because nobody knew whether danger had already left or was just hiding somewhere nearby. Bai Li held the sword steadily in her hand and moved with practiced ease, her eyes scanning the hallway as she went.

Reaching the door of apartment 2004, Bai Li unlocked it. The lock clicked open cleanly, and she pushed the door inward just enough to slip inside. Upon entering, she was struck by the opulent, ostentatious style of Hu Xuecheng’s home. Everything in the house looked expensive, flashy, and a little over the top, as if the owner had wanted to show off every bit of money he had. The furniture looked heavy and polished, the decorations were bright and gaudy, and even the arrangement of things in the room felt like someone had deliberately tried to make the space look rich. Bai Li did not waste time admiring it, though. She had seen too many empty-looking luxuries in this kind of world, and she knew very well that a pretty house did not mean useful supplies.

Bai Li first searched several bedrooms thoroughly, finding nothing but gold bars a considerable amount, though useless in the apocalypse. The gold bars were stacked away in one place, shining coldly under the light, and for a normal world they might have been enough to make anyone lose their mind. But now, in this world where food, water, medicine, and bullets mattered more than anything else, those things were basically just metal. Bai Li glanced at them and felt nothing. Gold could not fill a stomach. It could not stop a bullet. It could not replace a box of medicine or a pack of rice. She moved from room to room, opening closets, drawers, cabinets, and even checking under beds and inside the corners where people liked to hide valuables. She looked through the master bedroom, the guest room, the study, and even the storage space, but each time she came up empty. All she found was more of the same flashy stuff and a few pieces of furniture that looked nice but were not useful at all.

She searched every floor, but ultimately found nothing of value. The more she looked, the more she understood that Hu Xuecheng had probably already moved his really important supplies somewhere else, or else he had never kept much here to begin with. Either way, this place was not the treasure pile she had hoped for. Bai Li stood in the middle of the room for a second, thinking over what she had seen. She was not disappointed for long. In an apocalypse, disappointment wasted energy, and energy was something people had to save. Since there was nothing worth taking, she did not plan to linger any longer. She swept one last look over the place, making sure she had not missed any hidden compartment or safe, and then she turned around and left without any hesitation.

Without wasting any more time, she decisively abandoned the search and left Hu Xuecheng’s apartment. Bai Li quickly made her way to the tenth floor. The walk back down was much faster than the climb up, and she kept her steps light and steady, not wanting to make extra noise. After passing through the large white iron gate, she went home, grabbed some unwanted clothes, and cleaned up the bloodstains on the ground in front of the door. The stains had already dried a little, dark and ugly against the floor. Bai Li did not like leaving a mess behind, especially not in front of her own place. She picked up the old clothes she no longer needed, dampened them a bit, and wiped away the marks bit by bit. Her movements were calm and efficient, like she was simply doing one more ordinary chore. She did not make a fuss about the blood, and she also did not let the smell bother her. In this kind of situation, people could not afford to be squeamish. If she let the blood sit there, it would only attract attention and give the neighbors more reason to gossip.
