Meanwhile, the residents group chat for building 9 was buzzing with activity. As soon as the gunshots rang out earlier, many people had been shaken awake or had rushed to the windows to listen. Some of them had hidden in fear, while others had been quick to start typing on their phones. Everyone had a different idea about what had just happened, but the common thread was that no one could stay calm. In the group chat, people were guessing wildly, asking questions, and passing rumors around like hot coal. Some were surprised, some were excited, and some were clearly just waiting to watch the show. In the apocalypse, even a few gunshots could become a huge event in a building full of frightened and hungry people, and the chat room was proof of that. The messages kept jumping in one after another, each one more curious or nosy than the last, and nobody seemed willing to stop.

Bai Li didn’t have time to check her phone. After returning home and washing her hands, she remembered that she had made Yan Cijin cry, and felt a little guilty. However, she didn’t have many friends and didn’t know how to comfort others. Bai Li pulled down the hair tie that held her hair, letting her slightly curly long hair fall loose. She scratched the back of her neck and headed towards the door. Since she had made Yan Cijin cry, she should apologize. After all, she might need Yan Cijin’s help to interdimensional market in the future. Thinking this, Bai Li went out and knocked on Yan Cijin’s security door. Ofcourse she was just making excuses in her heart and even she knew it to some extent but both of them seemed to have a hazzy layer above their hearts which didnot allow them to see through their own true feelings.

She stayed outside for a moment after knocking, listening to the quiet on the other side of the door. Bai Li was not used to this kind of thing at all. She could face zombies without blinking, she could walk into danger without much hesitation, but standing in front of a door and trying to think of the right words to say was somehow harder than all of that. There was no clean way to do it, no simple move that would fix everything in one swing. She knew she had been a little too blunt before, and maybe even a little too harsh without meaning to be. The truth was, she did not know how to comfort people well. She had never learned how. So all she could do was come here herself and try to explain, even if she did it badly.

Soon, someone opened the door for her. Seeing that it was Yan Cijin, Bai Li was about to speak when Yan Cijin turned around and walked into the house, going from the living room back to her room. Bai Li paused for a second, then followed inside carefully. The room felt a little quiet and a little tense, like the kind of silence that came right after someone had cried and was still trying to pretend they were fine. Bai Li closed the door softly behind her and stood there for a second, not sure whether she should speak first or wait until Yan Cijin did. She chose to wait, because sometimes forcing the first word only made things more awkward.

Bai Li hadn’t even exchanged a single word when the little dumpling, quite naturally, ran towards her. Bai Li scooped the little one up and held her in her arms, the little dumpling’s eyes crinkling with delight. Bai Li bounced the little one around and asked with a smile, "Was LiLi being a good girl?"

Lili was really small, so when Bai Li lifted her up, she fit against Bai Li’s chest so naturally that Bai Li almost felt like the little girl belonged there. Lili’s tiny hands grabbed onto Bai Li’s sleeve with perfect confidence, and her soft little face brightened the instant she got picked up. Bai Li bounced her gently, just enough to make her laugh, and Lili immediately leaned closer as if she wanted even more of that attention. Bai Li looked at her and felt that the child was really too adorable for her own good. Her hair tuft was a little messy, her cheeks were a little round, and her eyes were bright and trusting, like she had no idea the world outside could be rough and scary.

"Yes, I missed Auntie." The little one snuggled against Bai Li, her little tuft of hair trembling slightly.

Bai Li’s expression softened right away. She shifted Lili a little higher on her hip and patted the child’s back slowly, carefully, almost like she was handling something precious and fragile. "You missed me that much?" she asked with a small smile. "Then what did you do while I was gone? Did you listen to your mother? Did you eat on time? Did you cause trouble?"

Lili blinked, thinking about the questions one by one. Then she shook her head very seriously. "I was good," she said, and then after a pause, she added, "I helped."

"You helped?" Bai Li asked, sounding amused. "What did you help with?"

Lili lifted her tiny hand and made a vague little waving motion, as if she was explaining something very big. "I helped here," she said proudly, then leaned her head against Bai Li again. It was obvious she meant she had been a good child and had not run around making a mess. Bai Li could not help laughing softly. The little girl was still too young to explain herself clearly, but that only made her look even more serious and cute.

Bai Li looked at the little one’s adorable expression, her eyes crinkling, but remembering Yan Cijin’s situation, she quickly said, "I’ll go find your mother first, and then I’ll come back to play with you, okay?"
