A place could look safe today and become a mess tomorrow if you did not keep fixing it. Yan Cijin walked her to the door with the little dumpling still clinging to Bai Li’s hand. The child clearly did not want to let go, so Bai Li crouched down and promised she would come back soon. Only then did the little girl release her, though she still looked very reluctant.

At the door, Yan Cijin paused after watching LiLi turn back toward the living room. Then she looked at Bai Li and said, "About moving in."

Bai Li turned back to her. "Mm?"

Yan Cijin did not rush. She stood there in the doorway with the soft indoor light behind her and the fading evening light outside, making her look even more clear and steady than usual. "I will think it over tonight," she said. "If we do move, I want to go over the storage and safety first."

Bai Li nodded. "That is fine."

"And the child needs to be comfortable."

"Of course."

"Also, your place needs to be easy for us to use."

"It is."

Yan Cijin looked at her for another second, then said, "You make it sound like it’s already decided."

Bai Li smiled a little. "It is not? I thought you were already halfway there."

Yan Cijin narrowed her eyes, but there was no real warning in it. Instead, there was a faint helplessness, because Bai Li really did have a way of making people feel like they had already agreed before they even noticed it. The little dumpling saw the two adults standing at the door and ran back over to them, wrapping both arms around Bai Li’s leg again. "Auntie, come tomorrow."

"I will come tomorrow," Bai Li promised.

The child finally seemed satisfied and let her go. Yan Laojin also walked over to the doorway and said a few more careful words about the water shortage and the need to store containers before the water ran out. Bai Li listened and nodded, then finally stepped out into the hall. The corridor was much quieter than before, but even then she could still hear doors closing here and there and the sound of people moving things around in a hurry. She stood for a moment, glancing down the hall, and then looked back once more at the family inside. The little dumpling was already being pulled back by Yan Cijin, but she was still waving at Bai Li with one tiny hand, looking completely bright and happy. Bai Li felt the corner of her mouth lift again. No matter how dangerous the future got, she had to make sure this kind of scene could keep happening.

She turned to leave, already thinking about what she needed to do next, and Yan Cijin watched her back for a second longer than necessary before closing the door halfway. The room became quieter again, but the feeling Bai Li had left behind still stayed in the air. Yan Cijin stood there for a moment with her hand on the door, then slowly turned back inside. The little dumpling had already gone to sit near the sofa, holding one of her toy blocks in both hands. Yan Laojin looked at Yan Cijin and said quietly, "You should think about it seriously."

Yan Cijin gave a small hum and walked over to the window. Outside, the sky was fully dark now, and the building lights across the way were turning on one by one. The whole world looked normal from far away. That was the cruelest part. Everything could seem fine while people were slowly running out of water, running out of time, and running out of patience. She folded her arms and stared outside for a while before finally saying, almost to herself, "She really does plan things properly."

Yan Laojin heard that and smiled a little. "Then maybe you should listen to her more."

Yan Cijin did not answer. She just looked down at the little girl, who had started stacking blocks again and humming to herself with a very satisfied expression. For a brief second, the tightness in Yan Cijin’s chest eased. If moving together could make things safer for LiLi, then there really was no need to keep dragging her feet. Bai Li had already given them enough help, and she had done it without asking for anything. That alone was enough to make Yan Cijin seriously consider every word she had just said. The water would not last. The building would not stay calm forever. And the more she thought about it, the more she felt that the next step might be the most important one they had made since the world started changing.

Yan Cijin’s ears turned slightly red. Was Bai Li implying that her hand was healed and they could give finally give their ambiguous relationship/friendship an official status? She didnt know but she was hopeful and her heart was beating fast, abnormally fast.

Yan Cijin glanced at Bai Li and coughed lightly. "Um, are you sure you want to do it tonight?"

"Yeah, but if you think it’s too rushed, you can come tomorrow morning. I can tidy up then."

Bai Li was thinking of cleaning up a room for Yan Cijin and the others. The bed in that room was 1.8 meters wide, so it was enough for three people to sleep. However, the room was full of stuff, and she would need to move everything to the study and living room, which would take some time.

"Tomorrow morning? Isn’t that a bit inappropriate? Doing that so early in the morning." Yan Cijin’s face flushed red. Are women really this promiscuous? Doing it so early in the morning would be too embarrassing. It would be better to do it at night.

Bai Li didn’t see anything wrong with it. It’s just moving house, right? "It doesn’t really matter whether it’s morning or evening," Yan Cijin said, her ears turning even redder. "Whatever you say, whenever you want."
