Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 275: Warmth.explode. It just became warm. A little messy. A little shy. The kind of warm that made the work easier to do because the heart no longer felt like it was the only thing making noise.
They kept sorting supplies in that softened mood. Bai Li stacked the canned food against the wall in groups, placing the heavier things below and the lighter things above. Yan Cijin helped her move towels, blankets, and a couple of sealed medicine boxes. She was still embarrassed, but now she was embarrassed in a way that felt slightly familiar, like she had been caught thinking about something she should not think about, then laughed at, then forgiven without being told. Every so often she would steal a look at Bai Li and wonder, once again, whether Bai Li already knew everything. The more she looked, the more she noticed Bai Li’s attention was actually very careful. Bai Li never treated her as a joke. The teasing was only teasing. Underneath that, there was always some kind of quiet respect. That made Yan Cijin feel a little steadier, even if her ears were still burning. She also found herself thinking that Bai Li was really too good at pretending. How could a person tease so smoothly and still act so innocent afterward? It was almost unfair.
Bai Li, for her part, was thinking something different. She was not just enjoying the misunderstanding. She was also trying not to get lost in the bigger feeling behind it. Every time Yan Cijin bent down and lifted something, every time she turned her head and the light brushed over her face, Bai Li felt her own heart tighten. She wanted to step closer. She wanted to say something more direct. She wanted to ask what Yan Cijin really thought and whether the other woman would be willing to walk through this dangerous world beside her. But she knew better than to rush. In times like this, any careless promise could become a burden instead of a comfort. If she was going to hold this woman in her heart, then she needed to be sure she could hold the life that came with her too. That meant protection. That meant responsibility. That meant not only love, but the strength to keep that love alive when everything else kept trying to tear it apart. Bai Li thought about all that while moving another batch of supplies, and the more she thought, the quieter she became inside.
Yan Cijin noticed that quietness too. She thought Bai Li might be tired, so she asked softly, "Are you okay?" Bai Li looked over at her and answered, "I am fine." Then, after a pause, she added, "Why? Do I look tired?" Yan Cijin hesitated. She wanted to say yes because Bai Li’s sweat had soaked the collar a little, but she also wanted to say no because Bai Li still looked very steady. In the end she chose honesty. "A little." Bai Li nodded and lifted the corner of her mouth. "You look tired too." Yan Cijin looked down at her hands. "I am not." Bai Li replied, "Then we are both lying." Yan Cijin lifted her head sharply, then realized she had been completely outplayed. Bai Li’s tone was so calm that it made the joke feel almost gentle. Yan Cijin had no way to push back against it. She only gave Bai Li a helpless look, which made Bai Li smile again. That smile was low and soft, the kind that made the whole room feel a little smaller and more private.
Just then Yan Cijin’s mind went back to the medicine packet from earlier, and she nearly covered her face again. She had been so scared. So stupidly scared. The moment she thought Bai Li might see it, she felt like the ground had opened beneath her feet. The truth was that she had spent too much time silently worrying about the promise she had once made, and because of that, her brain had jumped straight to the worst possible explanation. Yet Bai Li had only been reaching for the medicine to help her. The whole thing had been harmless. Yan Cijin rubbed her forehead and wanted to sigh. Bai Li glanced at her. "What are you thinking about now?" Yan Cijin said immediately, "Nothing good." Bai Li laughed under her breath. "That sounds like a very suspicious answer." Yan Cijin looked at her and finally said, "Then do not ask." Bai Li pretended to consider it. "I cannot promise that." Yan Cijin stared at her. Bai Li added, "You are easy to tease." Yan Cijin had no argument for that, so she simply turned around and kept working, but the tips of her ears betrayed her again.
As they moved the last part of the pile, Bai Li started organizing the open floor space in the living room, making sure there would be room later when Lin Zhongsheng’s supplies arrived. Yan Cijin quietly handed her one item after another, and the rhythm between them slowly turned smooth enough that neither had to speak much. Every time Bai Li reached out, Yan Cijin could feel herself noticing the shape of her hand, the warmth of her fingers, the confidence in her movements. It was ridiculous. It was too much. Yet it also felt very real. Bai Li felt the same in her own way. She had to remind herself twice not to stare too long when Yan Cijin bent down and brushed hair back behind her ear. There was something about her today that made every small move feel amplified, almost like the room itself was helping to make the feeling louder. Bai Li kept her face controlled, but inside, her thoughts were already leaning in. She simply could not act on them yet. Not here. Not now. Maybe not for a while. That did not mean she would stop looking, though.
A little later, Yan Cijin finally had enough courage to try one more counterattack. She put
