Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 276: Communicating well?down a stack of folded clothes and said, "You keep making me misunderstand on purpose." Bai Li looked at her very calmly. "Do I?" Yan Cijin nodded, then regretted it right away because Bai Li’s eyes softened into that very annoying little smile again. "You really do." Bai Li leaned a little closer, just enough to make Yan Cijin freeze, then said in a lower voice, "Maybe you are the one who wants to misunderstand." Yan Cijin’s whole face nearly exploded. "I do not." Bai Li straightened, pretending to be thoughtful. "Then that is unfortunate." Yan Cijin blinked. "What is unfortunate?" Bai Li looked at her with open innocence and said, "I thought we were communicating very well." Yan Cijin could not help it. She laughed despite herself, even while feeling completely defeated. Bai Li had won again, and yet the win felt strangely pleasant. Her heart was still beating too fast, but now at least she could laugh about it a little.
The afternoon stretched on in this strange, funny, and slightly dangerous rhythm. Bai Li moved things. Yan Cijin helped. Bai Li teased. Yan Cijin got flustered. Then Yan Cijin recovered for a moment and tried to tease back, only to get flustered again when Bai Li responded with a straight face and a faint smile. The room slowly changed shape under their hands. What had once been a messy pile of survival goods was becoming a livable space again. At the same time, what had once been only silent caution between them was turning into something softer, something more intimate, even though neither of them had the courage to speak it out loud. Bai Li knew she was not ready to promise anything yet. Yan Cijin knew she was not in a hurry to define anything. Both of them knew there was danger waiting outside the door, and both of them knew the world could not be trusted. But inside this room, with the sweat and the boxes and the awkward jokes and the accidental touches, some very quiet thing was growing anyway. It was not loud enough to call love yet. But it was close enough to make both of them keep looking back at each other.
Yan Cijin finally paused and looked around the room. The space was much better now. The pile in the living room had become manageable, and the room no longer looked like it might swallow a person whole. She wiped the sweat from the side of her neck and let out a very small breath. Bai Li, who was standing nearby, noticed the movement and handed her a tissue. Yan Cijin took it and said softly, "Thank you." Bai Li replied, "You have been working hard." Yan Cijin looked at her, and there was a tiny pause before she answered, "So have you." Bai Li smiled. That simple exchange should have been ordinary, but because it came after everything else, it felt strangely sweet. Yan Cijin turned away first this time because she was afraid if she kept looking, the expression on her own face would become too obvious. She had a feeling Bai Li might already know more than she admitted. She also had a hunch that Bai Li’s feelings were not as invisible as Bai Li thought. The thought made her heart sink and rise at the same time. Still, she was not in a hurry. She could wait. Let things grow. Let things settle. Let nature take its course.
Bai Li watched Yan Cijin quietly for a second, then lowered her eyes and kept sorting the remaining things. Her mind was calmer now, even though her heart still felt warm and a little restless. She had not decided anything yet, but she had decided enough to know that she did not want to let this feeling go. Not like this. Not without understanding it properly. Not without making sure she could stand beside Yan Cijin with a clean conscience and a strong enough hand. She thought about the future, about the danger outside, about the little girl in the apartment, about the supplies they still had to move, and about the woman in front of her who was pretending to be normal while clearly not normal at all. Bai Li almost wanted to laugh again. Then she held it in because Yan Cijin was already looking her way. The two of them exchanged one more glance, each pretending there was nothing unusual in it, each feeling the same hidden warmth, each staying right where they were, because some things were better left to unfold slowly.
Yan Cijin bent down to place a few more things aside, her movements a little slower now because the room had started to feel too warm and her thoughts were still not completely calm. Bai Li moved to another corner to clear space for the next batch of supplies, and the two of them worked on in silence for a while, only the sound of shifting boxes and soft breathing filling the room. Yan Cijin was still embarrassed, still a little flustered, and still wondering whether Bai Li really knew everything she was thinking. Bai Li was still thinking about the same woman, still trying to keep her own heart under control, and still deciding that now was not the time to step forward. The whole room was full of heat from their bodies and the long work, and the strange little misunderstanding from earlier still floated in the air like a secret joke that neither one of them was ready to admit had become real. Yan Cijin was also sweating profusely, constantly placing supplies aside.
After two hours of work, Bai Li and Yan Cijin had finally made the room almost habitable, and they had also arranged the supplies in the living room along the wall next to the TV.
Bai Li quickly took two bottles of electrolyte water from the refrigerator and handed one to Yan Cijin. The air conditioning was still on in the room, but after working for so long, both of their clothes were still soaked through with sweat.
