The square, which had already been dirty and chaotic, was now even more of a mess.

Lin Yun carefully stepped around the debris scattered across the ground and looked around, but she couldn’t find a single trace of a zombie.

She frowned.

Something was wrong.

Although the floodwaters had risen earlier, the water had already receded. There was no way they couldn’t see a single zombie now.

Lin Yun changed direction and headed toward the mall. She decided to check the second floor. She and Song Xizheng had only explored the first floor before, so perhaps the zombies on the second floor had never come down.

She hadn’t gone far when she heard footsteps approaching.

Lin Yun immediately took out her stem stick.

"Sister Lin! It’s me! It’s me!"

Seeing the familiar stick, Song Xizheng hurriedly called out. He had witnessed its power before and didn’t want to give Lin Yun the chance to smash his head open.

Lin Yun relaxed when she recognized him. She also noticed the protective suit he was wearing.

"What are you doing out here at this time?"

Song Xizheng instinctively raised a hand to scratch his head, then remembered that he was wearing a protective suit.

"Well, I saw that the water had receded, so I figured you’d probably come out too. I thought I’d come over and try my luck."

He paused before adding, "After all, it’s safer for two people to work together."

Song Xizheng glanced around before lowering his voice.

"Sister Lin, let’s go inside first. There’s something I need to tell you."

Lin Yun didn’t know what he was getting at, but Song Xizheng had behaved reliably so far, so she followed him into the mall.

"Sister Lin, I’m not afraid to tell you this, but my shelter is on the top floor of one of the nearby buildings."

"Because it’s so high up, I can see the streets below from my windows."

"At first, I didn’t pay much attention to the water or the changes in its level. But after the flooding got worse, I realized something was wrong."

Song Xizheng recalled what he had seen during those days and shuddered.

"The zombies seem to have disappeared."

"It was as if they had never existed in the first place."

"After that, I watched the streets outside my shelter every day. There were always strange things floating on the water, but I never saw a single zombie."

"I even checked from different windows in my shelter, and there really weren’t any."

"But that’s impossible."

Song Xizheng frowned.

"If there are no zombies in the square, that’s understandable. You and I cleared most of them out before the flooding."

"But with the water rising so high, shouldn’t some zombies from other areas have been swept over?"

"Yet there wasn’t a single one."

"Even when the water reached the second floor, there was still no sign of them."

He shuddered again.

"Isn’t that strange?"

"I’ve never seen a zombie either," Lin Yun muttered, stroking her chin. "There were plenty of corpses floating in the water, but none of them were alive."

Song Xizheng glanced toward the upper floors of the mall.

"Sister Lin... Could they all have gone somewhere higher?"

Lin Yun followed his gaze.

Then she suddenly remembered something.

The Zombie King.

Could it be... that the Zombie King had appeared?

"Shall we go up and take a look?" Lin Yun suggested.

Song Xizheng glanced at her.

"Okay!"

The two tightened their grips on their weapons and cautiously approached the escalator.

The mall had been thrown into complete disarray by the flood. Items were scattered everywhere, making the place even messier than it had been before the rainstorm.

They reached the second floor.

Still no zombies.

"Hiss... That’s strange."

Song Xizheng looked around uneasily.

"Don’t tell me the zombies can actually sense danger and ran all the way to the third floor?"

Lin Yun looked thoughtfully at the escalator leading to the third floor.

She had a feeling that the zombies in the mall—and perhaps even those from the surrounding area—were all gathered up there.

Without hesitation, she stepped onto the escalator.

Song Xizheng was startled for a moment, but quickly followed.

"Sister Lin, where’s your cat? Didn’t it come with you?"

"Shh. It’s inside my protective suit."

"Oh..."

The two quietly made their way upstairs.

When they were still some distance from the third floor, they pressed themselves against the wall and cautiously peeked around the corner.

Lin Yun froze.

There they were.

The zombies that had seemingly vanished during the flood were all gathered on the third floor.

Because of the mall’s open design, the center of the building was exposed between the floors. The zombies were hiding farther back, making them impossible to see from the lower floors.

Unless someone actually went up to the third floor, there was no way they would discover where the missing zombies had gone.

Lin Yun’s eyes widened.

Rows of zombie legs were visible not far ahead.

She felt a headache coming on.

Looking around, she realized there were even more zombies nearby.

But strangely, every single one of them had their backs turned toward Lin Yun and Song Xizheng.

The two exchanged a glance.

Lin Yun pointed downward.

Song Xizheng immediately understood.

They quietly retreated back to the first floor.

"The zombies really are on the third floor!"

Song Xizheng was still shaken.

There were even more zombies up there than they had encountered when they explored the supermarket a few days ago.

Lin Yun, however, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

She had already killed the powerful zombies they’d encountered before.

So how had so many ordinary zombies gathered on the third floor?

And why were they standing there so orderly?

It was strange.

"There are far too many zombies," Lin Yun said grimly. "The group closest to us just now had at least twenty or thirty."

Song Xizheng thought about it carefully and realized she was right.

There were zombies gathered throughout the entire third floor.

And that wasn’t even counting the fourth and fifth floors.

"Sister Lin..."

Song Xizheng’s expression gradually became serious.

"Could it be that all the zombies in this neighborhood are gathered inside this mall?"

As soon as he said it, the thought became even more frightening.

They had only seen the zombies in the corridors.

But this was a shopping mall filled with stores.

Who knew how many more zombies were hiding inside them?

Lin Yun’s expression darkened as well.

"...If nothing unexpected has happened, I think that’s probably the case."

"After all, there weren’t any zombies outside while the water level was rising."

Song Xizheng sucked in a breath.

"But when did they get to the third floor? That’s still strange."

"Before the water rose, they were already zombies," Lin Yun explained. "And before the flood became too deep, they could still wade through the water."

Song Xizheng nodded slowly.

"I see..."

Lin Yun glanced toward the third floor again, her eyes growing darker.

For some reason, the scene gave her an unpleasant feeling.

It was almost like someone was raising corpses here.

"Then... what do we do now?" Song Xizheng asked tentatively.

Lin Yun turned around and walked away.

"Let’s go."

"Let’s check the nearby buildings first and see whether there are any zombies there."

"If we find none, we’ll know whether all the zombies in the area really have gathered inside this mall."

"Okay!"

Song Xizheng hurried after her.

As he followed behind Lin Yun, he couldn’t help thinking,

Wow, it’s really nice not having to use my brain.

I just have to follow Sister Lin.
