The two quickly braved the rain and made their way to a building near the mall.

Before they even started climbing the stairs, a group of rats suddenly rushed out.

The mutated rats bared their teeth fiercely at the two of them, looking as though they wanted to devour them alive.

"Damn, seeing them reminds me—there have suddenly been a lot of these rats around here." Song Xizheng got goosebumps.

Lin Yun wasn’t surprised at all. Rats reproduced extremely quickly, and with their mutations, their reproductive rate might be even higher.

"Kill them if you can. Who knows how many animals will end up like them after the flood? If we don’t kill them, this city will eventually be overrun by them."

Upon hearing this, Song Xizheng thought it made sense and immediately raised his baseball bat to attack.

Lin Yun swung her stick at the rats as well.

This time, Lin Yun didn’t use any sunflower seeds or other special abilities. She needed to keep her trump cards hidden for now. Revealing too many of them wouldn’t be a good idea.

"Damn, these rats are so annoying. Why are there so many of them?"

Song Xizheng hated these things and was disgusted by them.

The leader of the mutated rats rushed over after hearing the commotion. The moment it sensed Lin Yun’s presence, its expression changed.

It was the aura of that female demon!

The mutated rat leader was terrified. It remembered the strange object Lin Yun had used before, the one capable of freezing them instantly.

After hesitating for a long time, it finally decided to order its people to retreat.

The female demon was currently killing its subordinates with nothing but a stick, but what if she became annoyed and used that terrifying thing again?

Thinking of this, it immediately ordered the mutated rats to retreat.

As the fight continued, Lin Yun noticed something strange.

The rats were retreating again, just like last time.

"Are they scared?" Song Xizheng scratched his head, unable to understand what was happening.

Lin Yun narrowed her eyes.

Could the rats in this building be the same ones that had previously lived in her building? Had they been frightened away by the Frost Sunflower Seeds and moved out overnight?

It turned out that Lin Yun’s guess was correct.

The rats really had moved.

Afterward, they had secretly investigated and discovered that the human had only been moving around the building. Yet no matter how carefully they searched, they couldn’t find any trace of her.

The rats became somewhat panicked.

Humans hated rats the most, and they were afraid that the human would eventually come after them. So, they had moved away overnight.

The mutated rats had become smarter, but they weren’t stupid enough to stay somewhere dangerous when they knew they couldn’t win.

Seeing the rats retreat, the two successfully made their way upstairs.

They searched the second floor. Most of the doors were open, and the interiors were messy and covered in filth left behind by the flood.

There were two or three rooms with their doors closed.

As they approached, they could hear noises coming from inside before they even opened the doors.

There were people inside.

No.

To be precise, they were zombies.

"Ho... ho..."

The zombies inside had keen senses of smell. The moment they caught the scent of living humans, they began frantically pounding on the doors, trying to break out and tear the two humans apart.

They had been trapped inside ever since the zombie virus outbreak.

They had survived by eating the meat in their refrigerators and even the hamster they had kept as a pet.

But none of that mattered. They had been locked inside and didn’t know how to get out.

Now that they could smell fresh food, they naturally went completely berserk.

"What do you think?" Lin Yun glanced at Song Xizheng.

Song Xizheng looked at the closed door and said, "Let’s go upstairs and investigate first. We’ll deal with these zombies after we’ve figured out what’s going on."

Lin Yun had no objections.

The two continued upstairs, checking one floor after another.

Without exception, the only zombies they found were those that had turned inside their own homes and become trapped there. There were no other wandering zombies throughout the entire building.

After spending two hours dealing with the zombies inside the building, the two moved on and investigated the surrounding area.

The result was the same.

All the zombies had disappeared except for those trapped inside certain places.

Perhaps... all those missing zombies really were hiding on the third floor and above of the mall.

"Sister Lin..." Song Xizheng swallowed nervously. "I have a feeling someone is raising Gu. This isn’t right, is it?"

He had seen this kind of thing in novels before—people raising Gu insects and allowing them to fight and devour one another until the strongest one remained.

The thought of what he had seen on the third floor of the mall made him increasingly uneasy.

Lin Yun patted him on the shoulder, her expression solemn.

"Be more confident."

Song Xizheng blinked.

"It’s not just raising Gu," Lin Yun continued. "It’s raising poisonous insects."

"You should have checked the Mission Center, right? There’s a mission requiring us to kill the Zombie King."

Song Xizheng’s mouth fell open.

"That’s right! There’s a mission in the Mission Center to kill the Zombie King."

He suddenly realized something.

"Could a Zombie King be spawning here?"

"Damn it!"

Song Xizheng immediately cursed, startling Lin Yun.

"Let’s go back. There are too many zombies on the third floor. The two of us can’t possibly take them all down. And if we disturb the zombies on the third floor, who knows how the zombies on the upper floors will react?"

Lin Yun had already given up on trying to resist.

She would sleep wherever she happened to fall.

She was just an ordinary survivor, and she admitted it. She wasn’t some protagonist destined to save the entire world.

Lin Yun had always been very clear about her own abilities.

Song Xizheng thought about the countless zombies on those floors and shuddered.

Sister Lin was right!

If the zombies on the third floor started moving, the zombies on the floors above would hear the commotion and come rushing down as well.

"Let’s go home, Sister Lin. We’ll go back to our own homes and find our own mothers!"

"By the way, Sister Lin, just in case we don’t see each other again for the next few days, let’s add each other as friends when we return to the transit station!"

"Please don’t reject my friend request!"

Song Xizheng followed his instincts and immediately tried to secure a connection with Lin Yun.

That was simply how he was. He knew when to be stubborn and when to lower his head.

Before leaving, he couldn’t help but remind Lin Yun several more times to accept his friend request when they returned to the transit station.

Lin Yun’s lips twitched.

"I know."

Those words were enough to put Song Xizheng at ease.

He immediately ran toward his shelter.

After Song Xizheng disappeared from sight, Lin Yun turned her attention back toward the mall.

For some reason, she felt a little... tempted to take another look.

She lowered her head and patted the three little ones beside her.

"Shall we go to the mall again?"

"Again, again, again! Please take me with you!"

The Ghost Vine pressed one of its vines against the transparent section of the protective suit.

Previously, the two little ones had stayed hidden inside the backpack to prevent Song Xizheng from discovering them. They had only dared to peek out whenever he wasn’t paying attention.

Lin Yun thought about it for a moment.

It might actually be a good idea.

The Ghost Vine was clever, and Song Xizheng had already left. They had also roughly searched the surrounding area and found no one else.

It should be fine to let it out now.

Once the Ghost Vine emerged, it immediately climbed onto Lin Yun’s head and stood upright, proudly stretching out its vines.

Sang Biao curled his lip.

This Ghost Vine was getting way too cocky.
