Blake yawned as he headed, alone, toward the training room.

He was tired, but at least, not exhausted. He simply would have preferred staying in bed for another few hours.

The same morning, he’d asked Spoon when his incredibly long penalty was finally going to wear off, since he lost track of time between every mess.

[Dear reader, it has been 30 days. As such, you still have 1 day of penalty left.]

Blake had stared at the message.

Then sighed in relief.

’Jeez, one week with that whole kidnapping situation, another one for recovery... and two weeks with school. Time really flies.’

He pushed open the training room door.

Then stopped.

"...?"

Myles was there, and that was expected.

What was decidedly less expected was Alexis’ presence.

Blake stood awkwardly in the doorway.

The past two days of training with Myles hadn’t actually gone badly.

He’d learned, more or less, how to aim the energy weapon decently. He could stay upright after firing now, and his accuracy was gradually becoming more consistent.

The only truly annoying part was doing it while moving.

Running, changing direction, shooting, keeping his balance... that was much harder, but it wasn’t unbearably tedious.

Honestly, Blake had expected training with Myles to be much worse.

Today, however, he apparently had a new problem.

He slowly walked toward Myles, then leaned closer.

He whispered, "Why is he here?"

Alexis immediately looked toward him.

"I can hear you."

Myles leaned slightly closer to Blake.

"We need to build some trust between you two in terms of fighting as a pair."

Blake’s face scrunched up.

’What the? I mean I guess it’s kinda necessary but... ugh, what a pain!’

He looked toward Alexis, who had his arms crossed.

"Watch your face."

"What?"

"I don’t want to do this with a complete weakling, either."

Blake’s eyebrows shot upward, raising his voice just slightly.

"I didn’t even say anything! Why did you call me a weakling?!"

Alexis raised his fist.

"Watch your tongue."

Blake immediately moved closer to Myles and hugged his arm.

"He’s being far too harsh!"

Myles looked toward Alexis.

"Cut it out."

Alexis clicked his tongue.

Blake stuck his tongue out at him.

Alexis turned his head away.

"When are we starting?"

"Now."

Blake released his arm, sighing heavily.

"Alright..."

Myles walked toward the center of the room.

"You’ll be fighting against training units."

Blake looked around.

Several mechanical structures began emerging from the floor.

His expression changed.

’Those weren’t there before.’

They looked far move advanced that the ones he had to shoot down...

"They’ll adjust to your movements."

Blake swallowed.

"Ah, okay..."

Myles continued.

"Your biggest problem when fighting together is that neither of you naturally accounts for the other’s position."

Alexis looked toward Blake.

"He’s unpredictable."

Blake frowned.

"Blake, you tend to move vertically and laterally because of your suit."

Blake nodded.

"Alexis, you tend to stay grounded and control the engagement through direct movement. So your movement patterns conflict."

"Then how are we supposed to fix that?"

"Communication is key, since you can’t understand each other yet."

Alexis looked unimpressed.

"Verbal communication?"

Myles pointed toward Blake.

"You’ll call your movement."

Then toward Alexis.

"You’ll respond."

Blake nodded.

"Okay."

"Begin."

The first training unit activated.

It looked vaguely humanoid, though its limbs were reinforced with mechanical plating.

Blake raised his weapon.

Alexis lowered his stance.

The machine charged.

"L-left?" Blake shouted.

Alexis moved left.

Blake immediately flew right.

They nearly collided.

"Whoa!"

Alexis stopped himself.

Blake hovered awkwardly.

"Sorry!"

"Move."

The machine swung.

Alexis blocked.

Blake fired.

The shot struck the machine’s shoulder.

The machine recovered almost instantly.

Alexis moved forward.

’He is super fast! Look at those legs...’

Blake flew upward.

The two separated.

For a moment, it looked promising.

Then the machine jumped toward Blake.

"Alexis!"

He turned, so, Blake expected him to attack.

Instead, he moved backward, so Blake fired too early.

The energy beam passed between them.

The machine avoided it.

"Why did you move?" Blake shouted.

"Because you flew directly over me!"

"I was making space!"

"You didn’t tell me!"

"I literally yelled your name!"

"That doesn’t mean jack shit, what kind of communication is that!"

"...okay, sorry."

The machine attacked again.

This time, Alexis took initiative.

"I’ll engage."

Blake nodded.

"Alright, then I’ll cover..."

"That’s the most you can do, anyway."

Alexis charged.

The machine attacked him.

Blake aimed, and waited a little before firing. The shot hit the machine’s side.

Alexis immediately struck the damaged section, which made the machine stagger.

Blake smiled.

"That worked!"

Another machine activated, then another...

Blake’s expression fell.

"Two?"

"Yes."

Alexis moved toward one.

"I’ll take the left."

"Then I’ll take the right..."

They separated.

For several seconds, things went smoothly.

Alexis attacked aggressively.

Blake kept distance, using his propulsion to move around his opponent.

He fired occasionally, forcing the machine to reposition.

But then the two training units switched targets.

Blake’s machine suddenly rushed Alexis.

Alexis’s machine went after Blake.

"Alexis!"

"I see it."

Blake flew upward, so the machine followed.

Alexis attempted to intercept it.

Blake turned sharply.

The machine followed him too.

He fired, but missed.

"Dammit!"

Blake breathed as the machine attacked, barely dodging it.

Alexis came from the side, striking.

Blake immediately fired and, this time, the beam hit.

"Yes!"

But the second machine attacked Alexis from behind.

Blake saw it.

"Behind you!"

He flew down and kicked the machine away.

Alexis raised an eyebrow.

"I knew it was behind him."

They stared at each other for half a second.

"You son of a..."

Then the machines attacked again.

This time, they tried to coordinate without constantly shouting.

It went worse... much worse.

Blake assumed Alexis would move left.

Alexis assumed Blake would stay airborne.

They both moved at the same time.

Blake’s shoulder collided with Alexis’s back, and being much weaker, he was the only one who fell hard.

"Ow!"

"Watch where you’re going!"

"You moved!"

"You moved first!"

"Stop."

Both froze.

Myles walked toward them.

"You are both making the same mistake."

Blake rubbed his shoulder.

"What mistake?"

"You’re trying to predict each other without actually knowing what the other person intends to do."

Alexis frowned.

"To be specific, he is making that mistake."

Blake nodded.

"Okay, I’ll try to think better..."

Myles looked toward him.

"Blake, you’re more accustomed to fighting beside me."

Blake nodded.

Myles looked toward Alexis.

"You don’t have that experience with him."

Blake sighed.

"We have to build it, we know..."

Alexis crossed his arms.

"Then let’s continue."

The next stage began.

This time, the training room changed.

The floor split into multiple platforms.

Some rose, some descended.

Several obstacles appeared.

Blake’s expression brightened slightly.

"Oh, this looks fun."

Alexis stared at him.

"You enjoy this?"

"Sometimes..."

"..."

Myles ignored them.

"Your objective is to reach the opposite side together."

Blake nodded.

"Easy, I guess..."

"Without falling."

Blake looked down.

"...ah, then it’s less easy."

They started.

Alexis moved first, as such, Blake followed.

The first platform shifted beneath them.

Blake immediately activated his propulsion.

Alexis jumped.

They landed on opposite sides.

"Wait," Blake said.

Alexis stopped.

"The next platform is moving."

"I see it."

"On three?"

"Fine."

"One."

"Two."

"Three."

They moved.

For once, their timing was almost perfect.

They both landed.

Blake smiled.

"See?"

The next obstacle came.

A mechanical arm swung across the gap.

Alexis ducked.

Blake flew over it.

Then another arm came from the opposite direction.

Blake didn’t see it.

"Down!"

Alexis grabbed his arm.

The mechanical arm passed above Blake’s head.

Blake blinked.

"Oh..."

"You’re welcome."

"Thanks."

They continued.

The further they went, the more difficult the course became.

And while they still weren’t particularly synchronized, they were beginning to understand one another’s habits.

Blake learned that Alexis tended to commit to a movement once he started.

Alexis learned that Blake could change direction much slower than expected.

Blake also learned that Alexis hated being surprised.

Alexis learned that Blake moved more frantically when nervous.

"Left!"

"Why?"

"Because the right side is blocked."

"I don’t see it..."

"It’s behind you!"

Blake turned.

"...Oh."

Alexis smirked.

"See?"

"Okay..."

A platform disappeared beneath Blake.

He fell.

"AH!"

Alexis immediately grabbed his wrist.

Blake dangled over the gap.

"...Hi."

Alexis stared down at him.

"Get up."

"I’d love to."

"Then stop talking."

"I’m trying!"

Alexis pulled.

Blake activated his boots.

Together, they got him back onto the platform.

Myles watched silently.

They continued.

By the end of the course, only Blake was breathing heavily, dropping onto the floor.

"That wasn’t so horrible..."

Alexis sat against the wall.

"It was inefficient, to say the least."

Blake turned toward him.

"But we finished."

"Barely, on your part."

"Shut the fu... anyway, it still counts."

Myles approached.

"You improved."

Blake smiled.

"Really?"

"You communicated more."

Alexis looked toward him.

"And you stopped moving unpredictably."

Blake frowned.

"I wasn’t unpredictable..."

"You were."

"I was improvising, I haven’t been doing this for long."

Myles looked between them.

"But you’re still far from synchronized."

Blake’s shoulders dropped.

"How far?"

"Very."

"Well..."

Alexis stood.

"Then we’ll do it again."

Blake stared at him.

"You want to?"

"We’re not going to fix it in one session."

Blake blinked.

Then smiled slightly.

"...That’s true."

They continued.

The next exercise involved a simulated corridor.

Narrow space.

Limited visibility.

Multiple targets.

This time, Blake couldn’t simply fly around.

He had to stay close to Alexis.

That made everything harder.

Alexis moved forward.

Blake stayed behind him.

A target emerged.

Blake raised his weapon.

Alexis moved.

Blake waited.

The target attacked.

Alexis blocked.

Blake fired.

The beam struck.

Another target.

Alexis attacked.

Blake covered.

Then another.

Blake moved ahead.

Alexis followed.

Their movements were still awkward.

There were pauses and mistakes, with occasional arguments.

But gradually, they stopped getting in each other’s way.

Not because they had suddenly developed perfect chemistry.

They hadn’t.

Blake still instinctively wanted to move differently from Alexis.

Alexis still preferred controlling the battlefield himself.

And neither trusted the other’s timing enough to completely relax.

But they were learning.

Eventually, Myles called for them to stop.

Blake lowered his weapon.

"So..."

He looked toward Alexis.

"Better?"

Alexis considered it.

"Marginally."

Blake frowned.

"That’s such a terrible way to say yes."

"It’s the truth, just shut up."

Blake sighed.

Myles looked at both of them.

"You’re not finished."

Blake nodded.

"I know."

"You’ll need considerably more practice before the infiltration."

Blake glanced toward Alexis.

Alexis nodded.

"We’ll continue tomorrow."

Blake hesitated.

Then smiled.

"Okay."

They hadn’t fixed their lack of chemistry, not even close. But at least they weren’t actively crashing into each other anymore.
