Blake got woken up by voices.

At first, he didn’t understand what they were saying.

The words seemed distant, muffled beneath a thick layer of sleep. His body felt heavy, and for a few seconds, he simply remained still, staring into the darkness behind his eyelids.

Then he heard a chair scrape against the floor.

"...this one is almost impossible to read."

Blake’s eyebrows twitched. Then, he slowly opened his eyes.

’Wah, I feel so damn heavy. I want to sleep like, ten years in a row.’

Inside his room, sitting next to his bed were Zlatan and Alexis, both looking through a pile of old files.

"Oh, you’re awake?"

Zlatan immediately turned toward him, his smile was almost absurdly angelic.

Blake squinted. Then, he covered his eyes with one hand.

’Too bright...’

"What hour is it?"

"It’s nine in the morning, you can sleep some more."

Alexis snorted.

’What are you so amused by...!’

Blake slowly lowered his hand and looked at the two of them.

"What are you doing here?"

"Looking through the files."

"What hour is it, again?"

"Nine."

Blake groaned softly and turned his head toward the pillow.

Nine in the morning. That felt offensively early.

Zlatan watched him for a moment before asking, "Are you hungry?"

Blake thought about it.

"...yeah, kinda."

Zlatan immediately looked toward Alexis.

"Go get him something."

Alexis’ expression soured.

"Why me? Last time I checked, you were his servant."

"Such improper words. You’re closer to the door."

"That’s not a reason."

"It is when you’re the closest."

Alexis grumbled something under his breath and stood.

Blake immediately lifted a hand.

"No, no, it’s fine. I can—"

Alexis glared at him.

Blake stopped.

"...Okay?"

Alexis walked out.

He watched him disappear through the doorway before looking back at Zlatan.

"What files are those?"

"Some of the oldest ones you got us."

Zlatan turned one of the folders slightly.

"The text is almost completely faded. We’ve been trying to piece together what we can."

Blake hummed.

His eyes moved over the papers.

There were sections where the ink had practically disappeared. Other portions were stained or damaged, leaving only fragments of sentences behind.

It made him wonder how many stories had been buried in those pages simply because nobody had bothered preserving them.

Zlatan looked at him.

"Why did you decide to ignite in us one of our old purposes?"

Blake looked at him.

"Huh?"

"The research."

Zlatan’s expression softened.

"You were the one who pushed us toward searching for these records in the first place."

Blake looked away.

"Oh."

His fingers moved slightly against the blanket.

"Well... I guess I can understand you."

Zlatan didn’t say anything.

Blake smiled awkwardly.

"Not on the same level, obviously."

He stared at the ceiling.

"But I don’t know who my real mother is. I don’t know what the other half of me is, basically."

His smile faded.

"And it hurts."

Zlatan’s gaze remained on him.

Blake swallowed.

"So if I feel that way without even knowing what happened to me... I can only imagine how horrible it must be for you."

He glanced toward the files.

"Especially when you’re being hunted because of something you don’t even fully understand."

Alexis walked back inside carrying a tray.

He placed it directly in front of Blake.

A bowl of oatmeal topped with berries and sliced banana sat beside scrambled eggs, whole-grain toast, and a glass of water. There was also a small portion of yogurt.

Blake stared.

"...That’s a lot."

"Eat."

Alexis sat down.

Blake picked up the spoon.

"If I feel this pained because I don’t know anything about my origins, then how horrible must it be for you? Especially since you’re hunted down for the half they don’t even know."

Both Zlatan and Alexis looked at him.

Blake immediately raised both hands slightly.

"I don’t mean that in an arrogant way—"

Alexis cut him off.

"Whatever you’re thinking, I want to discover my origins so I can destroy the world more efficiently, if anything!"

Blake froze.

He slowly looked down.

"...Oh."

His fingers moved toward the spoon again.

He started eating.

The oatmeal was surprisingly good.

He remained quiet for several bites.

Then he glanced between the two of them.

"Why do you two want to destroy the world?"

Silence.

Zlatan continued looking through the files.

Alexis turned a page.

Blake waited, but none of them replied.

He sighed.

’Okay...’

Another bite.

"Can I help?"

"No."

Zlatan didn’t even look up.

"You’re forbidden from working."

Blake frowned.

"Those are Myles’ words."

"Exactly."

Blake pressed his lips together.

"Then why are you here?"

Alexis looked at him.

His expression immediately became irritated.

"Why are you asking so many questions?!"

Zlatan covered one ear.

"Lower your voice."

"I’m not even shouting!"

"You’re simply not aware of yourself."

Blake frowned.

"Why can’t you just reply?"

Alexis glared.

"Because—"

"And stop raging for no reason!"

"No reason?!"

"Yeah."

Blake put down his spoon.

"Unless you have one. In that case, you can just say it."

Alexis stared at him.

"You little..."

Blake raised an eyebrow.

"Why do you have to behave like this after training together and going on—"

"Whatever we’re stuck doing together won’t change what I think of you."

Blake stopped.

"Oh?"

Alexis’ expression tightened.

"Yeah."

Blake leaned slightly forward.

"What do you think, then?"

Alexis froze.

For a second, he looked like he genuinely hadn’t expected the question.

Then he turned his chair around.

Blake stared.

"...What?"

Alexis now had his back toward him.

Blake looked at Zlatan.

Then back at Alexis.

’Why the hell did he turn the chair around instead of getting out?’

Zlatan leaned closer.

His voice dropped into a whisper that was absolutely not quiet enough.

"Alexis was just a little worried about you. He begged for us to come into your room and work."

"It’s a lie."

Alexis immediately responded.

"And I can hear you!"

Blake blinked.

Then he noticed it, Alexis’ ears were red.

Blake slowly looked at Zlatan.

Zlatan looked at him.

They both tried to hold their expressions, but they failed.

A small laugh escaped Blake.

Zlatan chuckled too.

"Shut up!"

Alexis turned around, glaring at them.

Blake covered his mouth.

"I’m sorry."

"You don’t look sorry."

"I am."

"You’re laughing!"

"I can’t help it!"

The door opened again.

Estelle stood there.

She stared at Alexis.

"Shut up."

Alexis’ face twitched.

"You’re too damn loud."

"I wasn’t—"

"Yes, you were."

Alexis grumbled and turned away.

Estelle sighed before looking toward Blake.

"Good morning."

"Good morning."

"How are you feeling?"

"Yeah... it could’ve been worse."

Estelle smiled.

"Can you get up?"

Blake shifted beneath the blanket.

"Yeah. I can."

He slowly pushed himself upright.

His body felt somewhat weak, but nowhere near as bad as before.

"Myles told me not to push myself, though."

Estelle nodded.

"Can you get up now, then?"

Blake raised an eyebrow.

"Of course I can."

He placed his feet on the floor.

"Do you need something?"

"I wanted to show you something."

Blake stood.

"Okay."

He glanced toward Zlatan and Alexis.

Neither seemed particularly interested in explaining anything.

So Blake followed Estelle.

The walk wasn’t long.

His body still felt slightly strange after everything that had happened, but his recovery had been remarkably fast. Three days ago, even sitting up had felt exhausting.

Now he could walk.

That was enough for him.

Estelle led him into another room.

It was filled with monitors.

Several screens displayed fragments of documents, surveillance footage, diagrams, and photographs.

’I’ve never been here before... usually she stays at the central room.’

"Sit."

Blake obeyed.

Estelle moved toward one of the computers.

She adjusted something.

A screen changed.

Then another.

Blake leaned forward.

At first, he didn’t understand what he was looking at.

It was an image.

A man’s face.

Blake’s expression gradually changed.

His eyes widened.

’Hey, isn’t that...’

He had seen that face before, at the museum, with Anthony.

His heart suddenly gave a heavy beat.

Ba-dump.

Blake stared at the screen.

"...That’s..."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Asher’s uncle..."

The room suddenly felt much quieter.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the monitor.

The man’s face remained displayed in front of him, frozen in the image.

Blake’s fingers slowly tightened against his knees.

After everything that had happened, Estelle had found him in the files.

Blake looked at her.

"Where did you get this?"

Estelle didn’t immediately answer.

She simply looked back at the screen.

Blake’s attention returned to the photograph.

There was something unsettling about seeing a familiar face inside this place.

"Ah, to be honest, I tried to do some research, but I don’t know much..."

"I know, don’t worry. I just called you here just because Myles mentioned you ran into him."

Blake stared at the photograph for several seconds.

"Ah? Well. I don’t think I can help that much if you want me to conduct some kind of investigation through Asher or Anthony... they’re wary of me."

Estelle sighed.

"Is that so? A shame."

Blake turned his head towards her, tilting his head.

"Can you maybe try to get in touch with him?"

"Hah?"
