Blake was staring at the ceiling.
Two days had passed.
The system did return the day before, but Blake couldn’t ask questions yet, as the door to his room was always left open.
He couldn’t get up alone to go to the bathroom, so that also wasn’t an option.
Fortunately, his passive ability was functioning. His recovery had been especially quick, far faster than any normal human should have managed after what happened beneath the hospital.
Not that Blake was complaining.
He sighed heavily and covered his face with both hands.
’Why did I say those things to Myles?’
He groaned beneath his palms.
’It was way too much.’
He’d practically broken down in front of everyone, begged them not to dislike him, talked to Myles about his family, his regrets...
And then he’d held Myles’ hand like some abandoned child.
Blake slowly lowered his hands.
These past two days, he’d mostly slept.
Apart from eating, drinking, showering, and being helped to care of his other basic needs, he’d done almost nothing.
He’d been left alone to recover, mostly, even if whenever anyone passed from a room to another, they glanced at him from outside.
Part of the reason was probably because everyone was busy trying to decipher the ancient documents he’d brought back.
The writing was already faded in many places.
Worse, some of the pages had been stained by his blood when he’d collapsed.
Apparently, trying to read several decades-old documents while simultaneously dealing with bloodstains wasn’t particularly convenient.
He didn’t know much about what they’d discovered so far.
He’d been too tired to ask.
"How are you feeling?"
Blake’s head immediately turned, it was Myles.
"Ah... well..."
He hesitated.
"Better."
Myles hummed as he walked toward the bed.
Blake watched him silently.
Over these two days, he’d noticed something.
Myles had apparently come into the room several times, but only when he was asleep.
He’d hold Blake’s wrist and check his pulse, until he woke up. And like nothing, he’d leave as soon as he woke up.
Now he was doing it again.
Myles sat in the chair beside the bed and gently took his wrist, his fingers resting against the pulse point.
"Why do you keep doing that?"
Myles didn’t answer as he stared at Blake’s hand.
"...you can hear my heartbeat from far away, so I was just wondering..."
Myles’ thumb shifted slightly against Blake’s skin.
Blake stared at him.
Eventually, Myles asked, "Do you want some sweets?"
His eyebrows lifed.
"...huh? Why?"
"Do you want them?"
Blake raised an eyebrow.
"Well. Why not I guess?"
Myles reached into his coat.
Then pulled out a handful of candies.
Blake stared, then laughed softly.
’These are wrapped candies you buy at a pastry shop. They’re too expensive, what a dumbass.’
Blake chuckled again and took several with his free hand.
He unwrapped one.
The candy melted pleasantly against his tongue.
His eyes widened.
"Oh."
Myles looked at him.
"It’s good."
"They’re handmade."
"I can tell!"
Blake ate another.
There was no strange artificial sweetness lingering afterward.
Just the taste of sugar and whatever flavor had been used.
He looked at Myles.
"You have surprisingly good taste, and you don’t even like sweets..."
Myles didn’t respond, continuing to hold Blake’s wrist.
After a moment, he asked. "What happened?"
Blake stopped chewing.
"Alexis said you suddenly started screaming, I heard it too, afterwards."
Ba-dump.
Ba-dump.
Ba-dump.
Blake looked down.
’Ah, don’t ask me, I’ve got no idea, either...’
How was he supposed to explain any of that?
If he told Myles about the strange child... then there would be questions.
What child? Why did Blake react so strongly?
Why had the flower triggered such a reaction?
And eventually, why did Blake seem to have memories that didn’t belong to the life everyone knew he’d lived?
Blake’s fingers curled slightly.
He couldn’t tell him.
"I..."
He looked toward the side.
"I found a flower."
Myles’ expression became slightly perplexed.
"A flower?"
"Yeah."
Blake swallowed.
"It was trapped inside a glass container. It looked old, but it was preserved. When I touched it..."
Blake shuddered.
"I felt this shooting pain."
Myles hummed.
He leaned back in the chair, his expression becoming thoughtful.
Blake glanced at his face, then immediately looked away.
For some reason, he felt uneasy.
Maybe it was because he was still holding his wrist.
Maybe it was because he knew Myles could feel every change in his heartbeat.
Or maybe... he simply didn’t know what to say.
Myles eventually leaned forward, his hand moving toward Blake’s forehead, which made him stiffen.
Myles brushed his hair back.
"It’s my fault."
Blake immediately shook his head.
"No, no."
"You shouldn’t have gone alone."
"That was my decision."
"I’m not saying your decision was wrong."
Blake went quiet.
Myles’ fingers moved through his hair once more. Then, he finally released Blake’s wrist. Instead, his hand moved behind Blake’s head.
He leaned closer, and rested his face against the crook of Blake’s neck.
He stared for a second. Then, his arms moved around Myles, hugging him.
His head rested against Myles’ shoulder.
"I understand."
Blake’s voice was quiet.
"But I’ll do it again."
Myles remained still.
"I won’t fail you."
Blake closed his eyes.
"I’ll become stronger."
Myles’ arms slowly wrapped around him.
He said nothing.
***
The moment Myles had heard Blake scream, something inside him had nearly snapped.
He’d been ready to put on his metal suit.
Ready to descend into that facility.
Ready to destroy everything standing between him and Blake.
Then he’d remembered what the suit was built for, and stopped, even if barely.
Then Alexis came rushing in.
Blake was in his arms.
Myles immediately took him.
"Give him to me."
Alexis didn’t argue.
Myles carried Blake into another room.
His movements remained precise.
Controlled.
Professional.
But his hands, they trembled, ever so slightly.
So slightly that another person might not have noticed.
Blake wasn’t in critical condition.
His pulse was strong.
His breathing was stable.
Under Myles’ care, nothing would happen to him.
It wouldn’t.
...
Eventually, everything was under control.
Myles leaned down, his forehead touching Blake’s.
He closed his eyes, a quiet breath escaped him.
Then Blake started talking.
Myles immediately opened his eyes.
Blake was unconscious.
His lips moved faintly.
Myles kept him pinned gently against the bed.
He couldn’t risk Blake sleepwalking in his current condition.
Blake smiled.
Myles’ expression softened, at that beautiful expression.
Then, tears suddenly slipped down Blake’s cheeks.
His heartbeat also accelerated.
Myles froze.
Blake’s lips moved again.
"I don’t want..."
Myles listened.
"...to leave you, my teddy."
Silence.
Blake’s face remained peaceful despite the tears.
"T-the house, bring me..."
His fingers twitched.
Myles’ eyes narrowed.
Blake’s heartbeat continued accelerating.
"Don’t do that..."
A pause.
"Why am I not supposed to come over anymore..."
His voice became almost inaudible.
Myles froze completely.
Blake smiled again.
His heartbeat was frantic now.
"I’d rather kill myself."
Myles stared at him, eyes widening.
Then Blake went silent.
Myles remained beside him.
He didn’t know whether those words meant anything.
Perhaps it was a dream.
Perhaps his unconscious mind was simply rearranging memories.
Perhaps it was nothing.
But Myles couldn’t dismiss it.
Not after everything he’d noticed about Blake.
***
Blake still hadn’t woken up.
Myles sat beside him. His eyes remained fixed on the sleeping young man.
His thoughts drifted backward.
To his first memory of Blake.
The beginning of first year, they had shared only one class. Myles had known everything about his classmates before entering high school. He’d known about Blake, the illegitimate child of the Anlorta family.
A family with long-standing connections to AL-TECH. Nonetheless, he was ignored, apart from being invited to some events.
Blake had been withdrawn, what most teenagers would have called gloomy.
That made him an easy target.
People approached him as a joke.
He had no particular friends and was lightly mocked.
He rarely responded.
And that was Blake for those four years.
Myles hadn’t cared.
Blake hadn’t interacted with him either.
More importantly... he had never been nervous around him, not once.
He had felt nothing toward him, until the eleventh of November, the day he confessed.
The day everything changed.
Suddenly, Blake was more brazen, extroverted and playful.
He spoke more and smiled more.
He behaved in a way that just had to be liked by the regular person.
Myles had initially believed it was a fake persona. Especially considering the Anlorta family’s connections.
Perhaps they’d suspected him and had been sent to investigate. He held no value, after all, he could die and nobody would’ve cared.
Eventually, Myles learned that Blake most probably wasn’t working for AL-TECH.
But he still knew Blake was not being honest about his initial feelings.
The change in him was sudden, but it wasn’t complete per se, since there were small habits.
Blake still scratched the back of his head when uncomfortable.
He still looked away when nervous.
Those little things remained.
Over time, the two sides seemed to blend.
Myles had assumed that was simply what happened when someone maintained a facade for too long.
Human psychology wasn’t simple.
People changed.
They adapted.
They buried parts of themselves.
They created new ways of behaving.
That wasn’t strange.
But now...
After hearing Blake’s sleep talking...
Myles wasn’t sure anymore.
There was something wrong with the picture.
Not necessarily something dangerous.
Just... something missing.
Something about Blake’s behaviour didn’t line up. Especially considering how vulnerable he was.
After some research, Myles easily discovered that just a week before changing so suddenly, Blake had a breakdown.
He wasn’t sure what it was, but it had been about his family.
Myles looked down at him.
The sleeping face was peaceful.
He remembered the way Blake had spoken about his family in his dreams.
The way he had cried.
The way he’d talked about forgotten words.
And now those strange fragments from his unconscious mind.
Myles’ fingers slowly curled.
Could it have simply been a dream?
Maybe.
It had to be considered.
But there was another possibility.
That Blake’s mind had been damaged somehow.
The mind could suppress things and then they would explode. This sleep talking and walking was one of them.
But there was something else.
The way Blake had changed.
The way his personality had shifted.
The way certain habits remained while everything else seemed different.
Myles had always assumed Blake had simply created a persona.
Perhaps that was partly true.
But now he wondered if he’d misunderstood the nature of it.
Maybe Blake hadn’t simply been pretending.
Maybe he’d been trying to protect himself from something he couldn’t consciously accept.
Myles looked at his sleeping face again.
Whatever the answer was...
He wasn’t going to force it out of him.
Not now.
Not while Blake was recovering.
Myles reached out and gently brushed Blake’s hair away from his forehead.
"You’ll tell me when you’re ready."
Blake didn’t respond.
His breathing remained slow.
His heartbeat gradually settled.
Myles stayed beside him.
