The conversation didn’t carry on for long.
Mostly because he simply took Blake’s hand and started dragging him away.
"Hey—"
"Come."
"I can walk by myself."
"I know."
"Then why are you dragging me?"
"She’s tiring you out."
He stared at the side of Myles’ face.
"...she isn’t."
Myles didn’t answer.
Blake stumbled along for a few steps before adjusting his pace to match him.
He glanced back once toward the room they’d just left.
Estelle was still there, probably staring at the screens and working on whatever ridiculous plan she’d just proposed.
He could already imagine how badly that could go.
Myles clearly had no intention of letting him participate, though.
By the time they entered the room again, Zlatan and Alexis were still there.
Neither had bothered leaving very far.
They were sitting near the table, surrounded by the various files they’d been looking through earlier. Several faded pages were spread across the surface, and Zlatan was holding one up to the light while Alexis looked through another.
Myles stopped at the doorway.
"Get out."
Zlatan looked up, a small smile appearing on his face.
"Oh?"
Myles stared at him.
Zlatan’s smile widened.
"Did Estelle tell you about her unpolished plan?"
Blake sighed as he waved one hand dismissively.
"If you already know, there’s no point in asking."
He looked between the two of them.
"Just please, get out for now."
Alexis scoffed, pushing himself out of the chair.
"This job isn’t difficult, don’t be a brat."
Blake frowned.
"I’m not being a brat."
Alexis opened his mouth.
Myles spoke first.
"I won’t repeat myself."
The room went silent.
Alexis stared at him.
Myles stared back, with no anger in his expression.
Alexis eventually scoffed again, clearly unimpressed.
"Whatever."
Zlatan shrugged as he gathered a few papers.
"Come on."
Alexis walked toward the door, and Zlatan followed.
The door closed behind them, silence returning.
Blake stood there for a moment.
Then, he looked toward Myles.
Myles turned toward him.
"You won’t be doing the mission."
Blake stared.
"...Can I consider the affirmative option?"
Myles looked at him completely deadpan.
"Yes..."
Blake waited.
Myles continued looking at him.
Blake let out a chuckle.
’...That was the most unexcited yes I’ve ever heard.’
Blake sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Fine."
Myles remained standing.
Blake looked up at him.
"Even if I’m not exactly thrilled about the way this would happen..."
He smiled faintly.
"I can see the massive benefits it’d give you. If I can get close to Asher’s uncle, we might be able to find out something useful. And if the event is as high-profile as Estelle made it seem, there’d probably be plenty of information there."
"There are still other ways to do this, it doesn’t have to be this event specifically."
"Yeah well, but you do want to get rid of him as soon as possible, right?"
Myles didn’t deny it.
"Anyway, what kind of questions would I even have to ask? Does he really know that much about Alfred, really?"
"He does. That man we met at the restaurant was able to provide us with that information."
Blake nodded, lowering his gaze.
"Does that mean you discovered Asher’s identity after getting this information?"
"It was one of the indicators, but we got to that conclusions in other ways."
"I see. But how are they close exactly? Like childhood friends?"
The mere idea felt ridiculous, of course. He almost said that as a joke, actually.
" You could say that."
Blake immediately raised his head, incredulous.
"You can’t be serious..."
"We aren’t entirely sure, but they’ve known each other since they were teenagers, at least."
"Ah... what a pair made in hell."
He paused.
"Anyway..."
His expression became more serious.
"The only thing I wanted to know was why you want to kill Alfred Hicth specifically..."
Myles’ eyes rested on him.
Blake tilted his head.
"If you’re planning on destroying the world anyway, eventually, what’s the point?"
Myles hummed quietly.
"The two things have to coexist in order to work."
Blake’s eyebrows rose.
"Well, why though? What difference would it make if you killed Alfred while destroying the world anyway?"
Myles looked away slightly.
"It’s related to the nature of my goal."
"The nature of your goal?"
"Yes."
Blake’s expression changed.
"The one you say you were created for?"
Myles nodded.
Blake tilted his head.
"What is the nature of your goal, then? Besides destroying the world and everything."
Myles looked at him.
"It’s not something I want to share with you."
Blake froze.
"...What?"
Myles remained completely serious.
Blake stared at him.
For a few seconds, he genuinely didn’t know what to say.
’It has been a while since he refused to answer my questions. That kinda stung... he didn’t even try to avoid it, he simply rejected to answer me!’
He slowly sat back.
Blake looked at him carefully.
There was no anger on Myles’ face.
No hostility or offense, nothing that suggested he was upset with Blake for asking.
He simply didn’t want to tell him.
And somehow, that made Blake even more curious.
But he knew better than to keep pushing.
At least... he tried to?
Blake eventually laid down on the bed, and stared at the ceiling.
There were too many things he still didn’t understand, like the reason Myles was created for.
The reason his goal involved destroying the world.
And now there was apparently another layer to it.
A necessary component that involved Alfred Hicth.
Blake folded his hands over his stomach.
After a while, he glanced toward Myles.
"If you’re fully determined to take this goal all the way to the end..."
He paused.
"Do you fully know what this goal is?"
Myles looked at him.
Blake expected another refusal.
Instead, Myles walked toward the bed.
He laid down beside Blake.
"My goal is fueled by something necessary."
Blake turned his head.
He scratched the back of it.
"Well..."
He frowned.
"Of course from your eyes it’d be like that."
Myles remained quiet.
"But is it..."
Blake hesitated.
"More emotionally driven?"
Myles raised an eyebrow.
Blake immediately laughed awkwardly.
"I mean..."
He looked away.
"Is it not emotionally driven, after all?"
Myles watched him.
"The goal is factually necessary."
Blake’s expression became thoughtful.
"Factually?"
"Yes, it has to happen. But maybe for some, it can also be emotionally driven."
"That doesn’t cancel out its origins."
Blake remained quiet.
He thought about those words.
For Myles, the goal wasn’t simply something the person who taught him wanted.
It was something that had been determined.
Something he believed had to happen.
Yet that didn’t necessarily mean there was no emotion involved.
Blake wondered what kind of thing could make someone view the destruction of the world as a factual necessity.
He didn’t like imagining the answer.
He also knew Myles wasn’t going to give it to him. At least not yet.
Blake turned onto his side and moved closer. Then, he wrapped his arms around Myles.
Myles looked down at him.
Blake rested his cheek against him.
"Can I have a little hint?"
He smiled as he leaned upward, kissing his cheek.
Myles’ expression barely changed.
Blake gave him another small kiss.
"Just a tiny one."
"No."
Myles turned slightly and wrapped his arms around Blake.
"I won’t tell you."
Blake’s face dropped.
"...Oh."
He rested his cheek against Myles again.
’Well.’
He sighed internally.
’I didn’t exactly have a high number in the trust stat, after all.’
It was a stupid thought.
But somehow, thinking of it that way made the rejection sting less.
Blake didn’t want to force him.
There were clearly things Myles wasn’t ready to explain.
And considering everything he’d already learned about him... he had the right to keep some things to himself.
Blake sighed.
"Alright."
He hugged him tighter.
"I won’t ask any further."
Myles’ hand rested against his back.
Blake remained quiet for several seconds.
Then he remembered something.
"But..."
Myles looked down.
Blake lifted his head.
"Can I at least know if that woman on the file was your mother?"
"Yes."
"Yeah?"
"She’s my biological mother."
Blake’s expression softened immediately.
He hugged Myles.
His hand moved slowly over his back, patting him.
"I was a little scared to ask that."
Myles remained silent.
Blake looked up at him.
"Are you okay?"
Myles’ eyes rested on Blake.
For a while, he didn’t answer.
His arms remained around him.
"I don’t know. I’m not feeling anything in particular."
Blake’s eyebrows drew together.
"Nothing?"
"No."
Myles looked toward the ceiling.
"I don’t feel sad."
Blake watched him.
There was something strangely detached about the way Myles said it.
Not cold or uncaring...
He didn’t feel sad.
Maybe he had already spent so long separated from whatever surrounded his mother that the information didn’t immediately produce the emotions he expected.
’They never even met, after all.’
Blake didn’t know.
He didn’t think Myles knew either.
"It’s okay."
Myles looked at him.
Blake leaned upward and kissed his cheek.
"It’s okay if you don’t feel sad."
Another kiss.
"You don’t have to."
Another.
Myles stared at him.
"I’m not sad."
"I know."
Blake smiled.
"And it doesn’t matter."
He kissed his cheek again.
"What are you doing?"
"Pampering you."
Myles let out a soft sigh.
"I don’t need pampering over this."
"I know, I know. But you also do that with me. Can’t I do the same?"
Blake rested his forehead against him, stroking his back.
"I’m doing it anyway."
Myles remained quiet.
"You don’t have to feel something anyway."
Myles looked at him.
"And you don’t have to explain everything just because I ask, I’m sorry if I sounded pushy."
A brief silence.
"But..."
Blake smiled.
"You can tell me when you’re ready."
Myles’ gaze softened by the smallest amount.
Blake noticed.
He smiled wider.
"See?"
Blake hugged him again, feeling happy.
There were already enough unanswered ones.
The nature of Myles’ goal.
Why Alfred Hicth had to die specifically and why that death had to coexist with the destruction of the world.
Who Myles’ mother really was and what had happened to her.
Blake knew that eventually, he’d probably ask again.
He couldn’t avoid that anyway.
But for now, he had no choice but to leave it alone for a while.
