Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

Blake stared at the phone sitting beside his plate.

He sighed.

"Excuse me."

It had been four days since that conversation he had with Myles, and everything was going fine, or at least as fine as it could possibly be.

The next morning, after that conversation, he decided to go back to his house and spend some time alone there.

Although Myles didn’t completely leave him alone. He still went to check on him once a day, even if for less than an hour.

Today, however, he’d decided to come back.

Myles had wanted to check him over properly and make sure there wasn’t anything wrong with him physically. Blake had also wanted to talk about the alien body parts they’d recovered.

Now that Myles had determined that he was physically healthy enough to discuss things, Blake had figured there was no reason to keep delaying it.

The others were sitting around the table with him, eating dinner.

Blake’s steak was already halfway gone.

He looked down at the phone again.

The name displayed on the screen made him sigh even harder.

What made it so tiring was it was father’s secretary.

Actually, he’d been calling for the last few days. A reason why Blake wasn’t able to fully enjoy his ongoing recovery.

He simply didn’t particularly want to speak to anyone from his father’s side of the family right now (which is the only one he knows anyway).

Unfortunately, ignoring the call didn’t seem to be working.

Ring.

Ring.

"...Fine."

Blake picked up the phone and stood.

"Sorry guys, I’ll be right back."

Nobody stopped him.

He walked into "his" room and closed the door behind himself.

Then he answered.

"Hello?"

There was a brief pause.

"Good evening, young master. I apologize for calling at this hour."

Blake leaned against the wall. That tired voice was still the exact same, it almost made him feel bad for ignoring him.

"It’s fine."

The secretary cleared his throat.

"I had been attempting to contact you for the last few days."

Blake closed his eyes.

"Yeah, I noticed."

"I apologize, young master. I understand you’ve been busy. However, as every year, I need to inform you on this."

Blake already had a bad feeling.

"You are expected to attend Young Master Alexander’s birthday celebration next week."

Blake took a deep, silent breath.

Another event and obligation he had to deal with, he wasn’t excited.

He stared at the wall.

"I’m busy."

The secretary went quiet.

Blake continued.

"I don’t know if I can attend. I need to prepare for college and everything else."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I was already there too much last time."

"Young master..."

"I’d rather not go."

"This occasion will not be particularly long."

Blake frowned.

"What?"

"Young Master Alexander specifically requested a more private birthday celebration this year. It should be considerably smaller than the previous occasion."

Blake’s expression remained unimpressed.

"Even so, I’d rather not go."

"I understand."

The secretary paused.

"However, I do not believe that will be allowed."

Blake’s eyebrow twitched.

"Allowed?"

"I mean..."

The man’s voice became more careful.

"If it is decided that your absence is acceptable, Madam will contact you personally to authorize it."

Blake’s heart skipped a beat, which made his expression immediately sour.

"Fine."

He forced his voice to remain neutral.

"I’ll be waiting."

"Thank you, young master."

The call ended.

Blake stared at his phone.

He didn’t move for a few seconds. Then he exhaled through his nose.

’Honestly, why even invite me then? There are no appearances to keep anyway.’

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

Honestly, he didn’t feel like going, not even slightly.

He didn’t want to see them.

He didn’t want to sit around while being insulted.

He didn’t want to have to remember which expressions he was supposed to make or how he was supposed to behave around them.

And it wasn’t even going to be some huge event.

So what was the point?

Blake opened the door and returned to the dining room, and sat back down.

Then he picked up his fork and stuffed his face with the remaining steak.

Zlatan glanced at him, smiling.

"What’s the occasion? Seems like you’re popular."

"Eh, just my family, nothing much. It’s not going too well for me."

Alexis snorted.

"Sounds about right."

Blake stabbed another piece of steak.

’How old is Alexander again?’

He’d definitely heard it somewhere.

Alexander was younger than him.

Two years, perhaps? That sounded right.

If Blake was turning nineteen soon...

Then Alexander would be turning seventeen.

’Seventeen huh, I was definitely better at that age. Then again, I wasn’t some golden spoon guy.’

Blake stared at his plate.

The dinner eventually came to an end.

The plates were cleared.

Everyone gathered around the table again.

This time, Blake was the center of attention.

He swallowed nervously.

He’d been waiting for this.

’Ah, hope they’ll handle this well. But I mean, why wouldn’t they anyway?’

Blake reached down beside his chair and pulled out a box.

He placed it on the table.

"I brought something."

Alexis looked at the box.

"What is that?"

"The reason we’re here."

Blake opened it.

Inside were several biological samples.

Hands.

Feet.

Other body parts that Blake couldn’t confidently identify.

He scratched the back of his head.

’I couldn’t exactly take these out of thin air.’

Alexis stared.

"You bought a box?"

"Yes."

"You bought a box for this?"

Blake frowned.

"How else was I supposed to carry them?"

Alexis opened his mouth, then closed it, frowning.

Estelle immediately leaned forward.

"Let me see."

She carefully lifted one of the pieces.

Zlatan picked up another.

Myles remained beside Blake, looking over the contents.

The atmosphere changed almost immediately.

This was what they’d been waiting for.

Blake reached into the box again and pulled out several sheets of paper.

"I also wrote down the blood analysis."

He placed them on the table.

"This is everything I got, mostly because well, the machine I was given could only analyse blood."

He looked at the others.

"Nothing more, unfortunately."

Estelle picked up the papers.

"No worries."

She skimmed through them.

"We have the machinery for this anyway."

Blake nodded.

He’d expected that, considering their... wealth.

The underground base had equipment that made most normal laboratories at AL-TECH look primitive.

Estelle gathered the samples.

"Come on."

They moved into the laboratory.

A large machine stood in the center of the room.

Blake had seen some of their equipment before, but this was different.

The machine was connected to several monitors and contained a transparent chamber where biological samples could be placed.

Estelle carefully put the first sample inside.

The chamber sealed and immediately got to work.

Numbers immediately began appearing across the monitor.

Blake leaned closer.

"That’s fast."

"It doesn’t need to grow anything."

Estelle typed something.

"It reads the existing biological structures directly."

The screen began filling with information.

Cellular composition.

Genetic structure.

Blood markers.

Tissue density.

Organ compatibility.

A long list of biological characteristics appeared.

Blake stared.

"That’s... a lot."

"That’s only the first section."

Alexis folded his arms.

"So?"

Estelle glanced at him.

"Nothing yet."

She moved to another sample.

The process repeated.

Each time, more information appeared.

Myles watched the screen carefully.

Blake watched him.

He couldn’t help wondering what Myles would feel if they actually found a match.

Would he recognize it?

Would his body react?

Would anything change?

Blake didn’t ask.

Instead, he looked at the files scattered around the laboratory.

Estelle began comparing the machine’s results against the old records they’d recovered, along with their own information.

She entered several biological markers.

The computer searched.

But nothing matched.

Alexis frowned.

"None of us?"

"None."

Estelle continued.

Zlatan looked toward Myles.

"Not even him?"

Estelle shook her head.

"No exact match."

Blake exhaled quietly.

Somehow, he’d expected that.

But hearing it still felt strange.

The samples were connected to them.

They knew that much.

Yet none of them actually matched.

Estelle continued comparing the results.

Then suddenly—

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

She stopped typing.

"What?"

Estelle stared at the screen.

"There are matches."

Blake leaned forward.

"With who?"

"Not with us."

She opened another file.

"The biological characteristics correspond with some of the older records."

She brought up several archived documents.

The machine’s results appeared beside them.

One after another, certain markers aligned, enough to establish a connection.

"The biological information is quite similar to what was recorded in these experiments."

She opened another file.

"Very similar, how impressive."

Blake stared at the screen.

The old records he’d seen before suddenly felt different.

They weren’t just meaningless experiments anymore.

They were connected to the biological material sitting inside the machine.

Estelle continued.

"Some of these experiments involved compatibility with extraterrestrial genetic material."

Another document appeared.

"Others were focused on integration."

Another.

"And these..."

She paused.

"...are closer than the rest."

Blake looked at the results.

His heart beat a little faster.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

There it was again.

Another connection between the old files and the people sitting around this table.

They still didn’t know exactly what the samples were.

They still didn’t know whose bodies they came from.

They still didn’t know why those particular biological structures had ended up where Blake found them.

But they had something.

A starting point.

Blake looked at Myles.

Myles was staring at the screen without saying anything.

Blake wondered what was going through his mind.

He reached over and lightly touched his arm.

Myles glanced toward him.

Blake gave him a small smile.

"We’ll figure it out."

Myles looked at him for a moment.

Then back at the screen.

"...Yes."

Estelle continued scrolling through the old files.

"There’s still a lot to compare."

She looked at the samples.

"But now we know we’re looking in the right place."

Blake nodded.

He stared at the old records.
