Chapter 119: Chapter 119: Focus When Kissing
Everyone at the card table burst into laughter. The tips of Claire Kendall’s ears were so red they looked like they might bleed.
Miles Warren hung up the phone and walked over, his gaze sweeping coldly across the room. "Don’t ask such pointless questions."
Seeing this, Jonathan Keller quickly tried to smooth things over. "Alright, alright, stop fooling around. Let’s get serious and keep playing."
Miles Warren leaned over, took the cards from Claire Kendall’s hand, and tossed them onto the table. "This round, I lose."
He then pushed all his chips to the side. "Split these among yourselves."
With that, he took her hand. "Are you done discussing the channels?"
Claire Kendall nodded obediently.
"Good. Then let’s head back."
Julian Wilde stood up. "Go to the back dock, it’s closer. I’ve arranged a new yacht for you, a more stable one."
He picked up a dark green silk scarf and handed it to Claire Kendall. "Once you’re on the boat, tie this on him. It should help a lot with the motion sickness."
Claire Kendall took it.
She stood in front of Miles Warren, rising onto her toes. She covered his eyes with the scarf, wrapped it around the back of his head, and carefully tied a knot.
"There, Dr. Warren."
This time, Claire Kendall took the initiative, pulling his hand and leading him into the cabin.
The boat set off, heading for the center of the lake.
Claire Kendall raised a hand and waved it in front of his eyes. "Dr. Warren, are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"
The man saw only a field of dark green. Unable to see anything, he shook his head.
Dressed in a shirt and trousers with the silk scarf tied over his eyes, his usual cold, stern aura had dissipated, replaced by a fragile, alluring beauty.
Claire Kendall’s heart began to beat a little faster.
’This body, this face... It’s impossible to resist.’
Her fingertip lightly traced the silk scarf on Miles Warren’s face, moving slowly downward until it stopped at his lips.
"Dr. Warren, you still haven’t answered that question from the card game."
"What?"
She moved closer, her warm breath ghosting across his neck. "Was that... your first time?"
Miles Warren’s body stiffened. His back went ramrod straight, and his voice was deliberately cold.
"Claire Kendall, are you as juvenile as they are?"
"Juvenile? I don’t think so."
A mischievous glint appeared in Claire Kendall’s eyes. She grabbed his tie with one hand and used the leverage to swing herself astride his lap.
The distance between them vanished in an instant, their bodies pressed close.
Miles Warren tried to push her away, but the gentle rocking of the boat robbed him of all strength and means of resistance.
He was like a helpless newlywed, completely at her mercy.
His voice was low and husky, tinged with a warning. "Claire Kendall..."
But she ignored him, kissing his eyes through the thin layer of silk before moving lower.
His fingers, resting on her waist, suddenly tightened.
She gave his lips a fleeting kiss. One wasn’t enough, so she did it again.
His eyes were covered, causing all his senses to focus on her lips as desire surged through him.
"That’s enough. Stop fooling around, Claire Kendall."
"Then answer my question."
The hum of the boat’s engine was deep and clear in the night.
After a long moment, he finally let out a soft "mm."
Claire Kendall stared at him. It wasn’t a big deal, but she couldn’t stop the corners of her lips from slowly curling upward.
"You were so skilled, though. Did you watch tutorial videos beforehand? Our Dr. Warren is such a diligent student."
"Let’s just say I’m a natural."
In the intimate atmosphere, a thought stirred in Claire Kendall’s mind.
"Miles Warren, then..."
She wanted to ask him: ’Do you still love her? The one he never got over, the one who’s abroad.’
She was halfway through her sentence when Miles Warren captured her lips in a kiss.
The boat rocked gently, and her thoughts became a jumble.
He murmured, "Open up. Focus."
In the end, she never managed to ask the question.
Claire Kendall kissed him back.
’Oh well. Some questions are better left unanswered.’
Love or no love, it seemed, couldn’t affect their current relationship.
’As long as the one he never got over doesn’t come back...’
The boat docked. Claire Kendall pulled Miles Warren onto the shore, and he yanked off the scarf.
He didn’t look as unwell as he had initially. His expression was cool, but his lips were a much deeper shade—her handiwork from moments before.
"I’ll go get the car."
Just as Miles Warren left, a faint, weak cry reached Claire Kendall’s ears.
A small, yellow-and-white furball was wriggling in the nearby flowerbed. Claire Kendall took two steps forward and scooped up the tiny kitten.
It was tiny and soaking wet, letting out a feeble MEOW.
Just then, Miles Warren drove the car over.
He rolled down the window. Claire Kendall, cradling the little kitten, looked at him pitifully.
She knew he was a neat freak. He would never agree to let her keep this little creature at Regency Gardens.
"Dr. Warren, can we take it to a vet, please? I’ll wrap it in my shawl so it won’t get the car dirty."
She expected him to refuse, but Miles Warren looked at her for a few seconds before opening his door and getting out of the car.
He took off his suit jacket and wrapped the kitten in it. "Hold it like this."
The kitten took the opportunity to nuzzle the palm of Miles Warren’s hand.
"Dr. Warren, I think it likes you."
「Regency Gardens.」
Miles Warren scheduled a mobile pet groomer, and soon the kitten was clean.
Claire Kendall held the little one and asked tentatively, "Dr. Warren, does this mean you’re letting us keep it?"
"Mm," Miles Warren replied, now in a fresh set of clothes. "I have a meeting. You should get some rest."
Claire Kendall played with the little ginger kitten, which immediately snuggled into her arms and followed her everywhere, being very clingy.
The study door was ajar. In a moment of inattention from Claire, the ginger kitten darted right in.
’Oh no!’
Claire Kendall’s heart skipped a beat. Afraid of disturbing Miles Warren’s work, she crouched down and crept inside, hoping to grab the kitten.
At that moment, Miles Warren was looking at his computer screen, discussing the pre-operative considerations for a highly complex surgery with top medical experts from across the country.
The ginger kitten made a beeline for Miles Warren’s feet and disappeared under the desk.
With everyone on the other end of the video call watching, Miles Warren bent down, and with a pinch of his long fingers, lifted the tiny kitten up.
"Take it."
Claire Kendall quickly took it. "Sorry, Dr. Warren. I’m so sorry for interrupting your meeting."
On the other side of the screen, the medical titans exchanged looks of utter shock. The infamous neat freak was raising a cat?
"Is that...?"
Miles Warren faced the camera, but his gaze was on Claire Kendall, who was holding the cat and tiptoeing out. His expression was one of doting indulgence.
"It’s nothing. That was my wife. Her cat ran in."
Claire Kendall froze, her hand on the study door.
’His wife? She quite liked the sound of that.’
By the time the meeting ended, Claire Kendall was already asleep.
The next morning, she saw a message from Miles Warren.
He had gone to the lab to assist Professor Olek with a pathology analysis and probably wouldn’t be back that night.
Claire Kendall had just replied, "Got it," when her phone suddenly rang.
She answered the call, and Louis Warren’s voice came from the other end.
"Claire Kendall, come back to the old residence with Miles."
This was the first time the old man had contacted her since their argument in the study.
Claire Kendall said in a low voice, "Miles is working late tonight. He can’t come back."
Louis Warren gave a cold command.
"If he can’t come back, then you’ll come back by yourself."
