Chapter 136: Chapter 136: Aethel’s Huge Scandal! Breaking
Regency Gardens.
Claire helped him onto the bed and thoughtfully tucked a soft pillow behind his waist so he could lean back comfortably.
She retrieved a pair of light gray lounge pants from the walk-in closet.
She bent down, reaching for the button on his dress pants.
Miles quickly grabbed her hand. "I’ll do it myself."
"How are you going to change by yourself when you can’t move your leg?" Claire pushed his hand away. "Is there any part of you I haven’t seen?"
"Never mind seeing—I’ve touched you countless times."
CLICK. Claire undid the button and pulled down the zipper. The sound of the metal zipper was exceptionally clear in the quiet bedroom.
The tips of Miles’s ears turned red, a blush that spread all the way down his neck.
Claire tugged his pants off, revealing long, strong legs with a healthy, tan complexion.
Her current position gave her a direct view of... well. She blinked, showing no intention of looking away. Her tone was mischievous.
"Dr. Warren, isn’t your reaction a bit much? I haven’t even touched you yet."
His jaw tensed, and he quickly turned his head away. "Have you... seen enough?"
Claire let out a soft hmph and pulled his pants completely off.
Holding the lounge pants, she recalled what he’d done to her on the sofa the other day when he was angry. Finding just the right angle, she deliberately slapped him on the butt.
SMACK! The sound was crisp.
"Lift up a bit," Claire said, acting like a little rogue. "Nice and firm."
"Claire Kendall," Miles said in a low voice, holding back.
Once the pants were on, he tied the drawstring himself.
Claire leaned in closer, her fair hand poking his lower abdomen. "Dr. Warren, need a hand with that?"
The man gritted his teeth. "No."
"Well... how about a little bonus, then?" Claire tapped her lips.
Miles ignored her.
"Hmph, you’re no fun..." she muttered, turning to leave.
The next second, a hand grabbed her.
"Miles, be careful!" she exclaimed, dodging his injured knee.
His kiss was punishing.
’Claire’s mind was on his injury. The gauze on his knee is still on... what if doing this makes it bleed again?’
Claire pushed him away forcefully. She scrambled off the bed, her legs giving way as she sank to her knees beside it. She glared at him, her tone serious. "Are you crazy? Do you want to lose your leg?"
Miles leaned back against the headboard, his gaze dark as he stared at her, his chest rising and falling.
After the kiss, the charged atmosphere only intensified. He made no effort to hide it anymore, his gaze fixed on her, direct and searing.
Claire coughed awkwardly and averted her gaze. She grabbed a thin blanket from the side and draped it over him. "I’ll go make dinner."
In all their time married, this was the first time Claire had ever used the kitchen at Regency Gardens.
She found a clay pot, washed the rice, peeled a yam, and started making congee, her movements a single, fluid motion. Once it was ready, she plated it with a few small side dishes and carried the tray into the bedroom.
The yam was tender, the rice grains had blossomed, and a glossy sheen of rice cream floated on the surface.
Claire scooped up a spoonful, blew on it gently, and brought it to Miles’s lips. "Have a taste."
"It’s delicious."
"Heh. The first time I brought you food at the hospital, it was yam congee. You immediately turned around and gave it to Dr. Keller and the other interns." Claire pouted, scornful and clearly holding a grudge.
Miles took the bowl from her, his voice somewhat subdued.
"I wasn’t the one who gave it away."
"He took it himself."
Claire froze. ’So that’s what happened.’ She narrowed her eyes slightly. "You sound a little disappointed, you know?"
"Were you sad you didn’t get to have the congee I brought you?"
Her lips curled into a smile, her eyes crinkling. "Dr. Warren, does this mean you had a thing for me back then?"
"No."
Miles denied it, looking down as he ate his congee.
’After all, it wasn’t back then,’ he thought. ’It was ten years ago.’
Clementine slipped in from the living room, tail swishing, and tried to jump onto the bed to get close to Miles, whom she hadn’t seen in ages. But Claire caught her mid-air.
"Settle down. Your dad is still sick."
Hearing the word "dad," Miles’s fingers, wrapped around the spoon, paused. The faintest hint of a smile touched his lips.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed scrolling through her phone when a notification from X popped up.
Big Scoop Out of Aethel!
She tapped on it. The post was trending, marked with a "viral" tag.
Reliable inside source: A top-tier corporation in Aethel high society—the kind of family business that’s a pillar of the nation! Overnight, the heir apparent was disowned by his own father, kicked out of the company, and forced to relinquish all inheritance rights. And the rumor is, it was all over a woman.
The secret affairs of wealthy families were always a hot topic, and the comment section was already blowing up with wild speculation.
Claire swung her legs as she held the phone out in front of Miles, ready to gossip.
"Hey, hey, do you have any inside info? Do you know who they’re talking about?"
Miles gave it a cursory glance, his expression impassive. "Uninteresting."
"How is it uninteresting?" Claire took her phone back and started scrolling through the comments, getting more and more engrossed.
"Look, look! Someone says the family is in finance, another says real estate. Oh, and someone else is guessing it’s an arts family, saying the patriarch adopted a son years ago. Maybe it’s someone we know..."
She suddenly stopped, her eyes darting around as she began to analyze the situation like an expert.
"I have a feeling that for an heir to be suddenly removed, there has to be a major issue."
"Either he racked up huge gambling debts, or he was caught in some kind of sordid scandal, or—"
She started counting on her fingers. "He defied his family, insisting on marrying someone they look down on. That’s the most common plot in TV dramas."
Miles’s fingers, holding the congee bowl, tightened imperceptibly.
Claire didn’t notice. She kept scrolling through the comments and suddenly burst out laughing.
"Someone else says the heir had a falling out with his family over an actress."
She turned her head, poked Miles’s calf, and said seriously,
"Dr. Warren, what do you think this guy was thinking? Giving up a perfectly good inheritance and having a falling out with his family, all for some woman. Is he an idiot?"
Miles kept his eyes downcast on his congee, his voice as flat as a stagnant pond.
"Perhaps... he had his reasons."
Claire tossed her phone onto the pillow and scooted closer to him.
"Giving up money, family, and reputation, all for one woman... just how beautiful must she be?"
She suddenly leaned in close, her bright, sparkling eyes fixed on him.
"Miles Warren, let me give you a heads-up. If you ever go chasing after some actress, I’ll be the first one to lose it on you. You hear me?"
’If I ever catch you, you’re done for! Tearing the other woman to shreds and kicking the cheating man to the curb—she was an expert at that sort of thing!’
