Chapter 148: Chapter 148: In the Bathroom

Miles Warren reached out and turned off the showerhead. Her leg was still injured and shouldn’t get wet.

The moment the water shut off, Claire Kendall stepped barefoot onto the tiled floor, right into a small, lingering puddle.

The distance between them closed in an instant.

"Claire Kendall, you..."

She lifted her head, her eyes red. "I can kneel. I’ll kneel for as long as it takes. I was just so scared you wouldn’t be released. I thought I’d never see you again."

Her voice trembled, the composure she’d maintained all night finally shattering.

She wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him tight.

The nightgown she was wearing might as well have been nothing at all.

"Claire, I’m fine. Don’t be afraid. You should go out..."

Before Miles Warren could finish, she was already kissing him. Standing on her tiptoes, she pressed her lips to his, desperately needing to prove to herself that he was really back.

The sense of floating, of unreality, vanished the moment he kissed her back.

As he returned her kiss, Claire Kendall stumbled back until her back hit the shower controls, accidentally turning the water on.

The shower instantly drenched them both. Miles Warren grabbed her hands and pinned them against the wall, sending shivers through her.

"Don’t... not here..." she whimpered, turning her head away.

He lifted her by the leg, hoisting her up slightly as he bit her ear.

"Right here."

"In this position, I won’t touch your wound."

Clementine tilted its head, hopping about anxiously at the bathroom door and pawing at the floor.

It heard the SPLASHING water from inside, along with fragmented whimpers and suppressed, low gasps.

Thinking its owner was in danger, it paced back and forth anxiously, its tail held high. Finally, with nothing else to do, it simply lay down to wait.

The sound of the running water lasted for a long time.

Mindful of her injury, Miles Warren carried her out of the bathroom and wrapped her in a bath towel. It was impossible to tell if she was covered in sweat or water.

Claire Kendall looked like a mermaid just pulled from the sea, glistening with sweat and dripping with water.

She hooked a hand around his arm. "Don’t go. Stay with me."

"Stay?"

Claire Kendall bit her lip. "To sleep. Just... sleep."

Miles Warren said nothing and simply lay down. Like a kitten, Claire Kendall snuggled into his arms.

"Does your leg still hurt?"

"Doesn’t hurt," Claire Kendall said, audaciously propping her leg on his hip. "How did you get released?"

"Lawyers, and the hospital’s surgical surveillance footage."

"And the baby girl...?"

"Post-operative infection from a contaminated drug." Miles Warren paused. "Victor Warren arranged it."

Claire Kendall’s breath caught in her throat.

His voice grew heavy. "The baby’s parents weren’t wrong to blame me. I saved her, and yet I’m also the one who killed her."

"300ml of a contaminated drug, injected into her veins... It would have been excruciating. All she could do was cry."

Claire Kendall’s heart clenched.

"No, it’s not your fault."

’The Warren family is so ruthless,’ she thought. ’To completely destroy him, they’d stoop to something so monstrous.’

"So what are you going to do? Call the police?"

"Useless." Miles Warren knew perfectly well that Victor Warren was in charge of the Warren Group now. He’d brought an illegitimate son into the picture to compete with him and set Louis Warren’s mind at ease. Since Victor dared to do this, he’s already planned his exit strategy.

"Go to sleep. I’ll handle it." Miles Warren patted her, his voice soft and distant.

’The baby’s death, Claire’s injury... they made him realize his current path was wrong.’

’Even if he wanted nothing from the Warren family, even if he made a clean break, they would still hunt him down. If that’s how it is... if they want a fight? Then let’s settle this once and for all.’

Early the next morning, a thunderous knock echoed at the door of their Regency Gardens apartment.

Miles Warren was in the kitchen making breakfast. He immediately turned off the stove and went to open the door.

Outside stood the Warren family’s butler, a grim look on his face.

"Young Master, the Master requests that you come to the hospital."

Miles Warren leaned against the doorframe, his expression nonchalant. "What’s all the racket for? My wife hasn’t had her breakfast yet."

The butler froze, and before he could react, the door was shut in his face.

Claire Kendall walked out of the bedroom. She had changed into a long-sleeved dress that completely concealed the gauze bandage on her knee.

She heard the commotion outside the door and was a little uneasy.

’She’d had a taste of the Warren family’s methods.’

Miles Warren set her breakfast down in front of her. "I made an appointment with Wallace Sutton. I need you to deliver the qipao to him. He has a few projects lined up; have OCHH follow through on them. It should help offset the losses from the product launch."

"I’m not going," Claire Kendall said, her gaze determined. "I’m going to the hospital with you."

Miles Warren looked at her and sighed. There was nothing he could do.

A luxury private hospital.

The entrance to the VIP ward was surrounded by bodyguards. Felix Warren was lying on the bed, his once halfway-decent-looking face now swollen like a pig’s head.

His nose was bandaged with gauze, and his lip was split, revealing the black gap of a missing tooth.

He was wrapped in bandages from head to toe. His back, which had been pierced by glass shards, was propped up on several thick cotton pads. The slightest movement made him grimace in pain.

Louis Warren sat on the sofa, leaning on his cane, his face livid.

Victor Warren stood behind his father, his eyes fixed on the doorway with a sinister glint.

Upon seeing Claire Kendall, Felix Warren still couldn’t keep his mouth shut.

He mumbled, "Little Auntie, you’re here. Did you come to see me? Last night, I was thinking about you..."

His words trailed off as his eyes met Miles Warren’s over her shoulder. He immediately shut his mouth, his lecherous tone replaced by pathetic wails.

"Grandpa, Dad, it was him who beat me like this!"

Felix Warren pointed at Miles Warren, his voice muffled and indistinct, making him sound utterly ridiculous.

"Miles Warren, you’ve really gotten bold since leaving the Warren family. Do you have any respect for me, your older brother?"

"Felix just returned to the family. He’s your own nephew! Did you want to get charged with murder, beating him like this?"

Victor Warren interjected, his tone even colder than his father’s.

"Don’t think you’re in the clear just because you’re out on bail. Assault charges on top of the medical malpractice... little brother, are you hoping to spend a few years in prison?"

Claire Kendall’s spine went rigid. "And what about Felix Warren? Assault and sexual battery... that’s enough to get him a few years, too."

"You’re lying! When did I ever do anything to you?"

Claire Kendall tapped her phone, and his sleazy voice filled the room.

"Little Auntie, you’re so beautiful... That chest, that waist..."

"How about you leave him for me? You’re even prettier when you cry."

...

Louis Warren’s expression was grim.

"When did you record that?!" Felix Warren shrieked, stunned that Claire Kendall could be so cunning.

Miles Warren’s expression remained unchanged as he walked over to the hospital bed.

"What are you doing?" Felix Warren asked, a note of terror in his voice.

Miles Warren pulled a nearby chair over, sat down unhurriedly, and reached out to touch his nephew’s bandaged face.

The pressure seemed light, but it landed precisely on a spot where the glass had cut him.

The pressure from his hand steadily increased. As Felix Warren began to squeal like a stuck pig, the faintest hint of a smile touched Miles Warren’s eyes.

"Aren’t you a doctor?! You’re supposed to save people... How can you fucking hit someone like this?!"

Miles Warren pulled his hand back, took a tissue from the bedside table, and wiped his fingers with deliberate, slow disgust.

"I save people. But first, they have to be human."
