Chapter 151: Chapter 151: I’ll Give You a Massage Tonight
Claire Kendall’s body was sore and limp. She was sprawled weakly on the bed, her arm dangling over the side, too exhausted to even lift a finger.
Miles Warren walked out of the bathroom with a hot, damp towel in his hand. He sat on the edge of the bed, picked up her dangling hand, and carefully wiped each finger.
His movements were light and gentle. When he reached her ring finger, he gently caressed it a few times, then picked up the ring from the nightstand. He slid it back on for her, lowered his head, and placed a kiss on it.
Disturbed, Claire Kendall mumbled a few drowsy words before falling back into a deep sleep.
He tucked the covers around her, turned off the night light, and got up to leave the bedroom.
「In the study.」
Miles Warren sat down and pulled open the bottom drawer on the left.
Inside were dozens of neatly stacked letters in envelopes of all colors.
He took them out and opened the one on top. It was filled with a young girl’s adoring thoughts for him.
"Miles, I passed by the library entrance today, and we made eye contact! My heart is beating so fast. I wonder if I’ll get a reply from you?"
"Miles, your speech today was perfect. I really admire you. Do you want to go out for dinner tonight?"
His fingertips gently brushed over the handwriting. Under the light, his gaze was incredibly soft.
The first letter, the second, the third... He could clearly recall the contents of every single one, down to the last punctuation mark.
These letters had followed him abroad, through his research, back to his home country, to his new job at the hospital, and through his first surgery...
Her childish words of love had run through the entire course of his adult life.
She was like the sun, its light so dazzling. At first, he couldn’t get used to it, but eventually, he found himself willing to slow down, to pause for her, to chase after her.
Miles Warren carefully folded the letter, placed it back in its envelope, and a satisfied smile touched his lips.
He had never felt such a tangible sense of happiness as he did at this moment.
He unfolded a sheet of paper, and his strong, elegant handwriting spread across the page.
Claire:
I’ve actually written you many replies over the years, but this is the only one I will ever deliver to you.
You don’t seem to remember writing me love letters in college, but that’s okay. Every sleepless night, I’m still incredibly grateful that you once left something behind that was meant for me.
I was stubborn and slow. The first time I mustered up the courage, you were already standing by Jacob Sinclair’s side.
Those love letters were just a youthful whim for you, but I was trapped inside them for a full decade.
It would be a lie to say I don’t resent you. I resent you more than anyone, but I also love you more than anything.
I love your innocent vulnerability, your idealism, your reckless determination.
This time, I can finally keep you by my side.
Miles Warren folded the letter, placed it neatly in an envelope, and tucked it into his suit pocket.
’I’ll give it to her tomorrow.’
This felt like the first time he had ever expressed his love so intensely, so fervently.
「The next morning」
Claire Kendall struggled to get out of bed, her whole body aching. ’That bastard Miles Warren... had he really insisted on an all-you-can-eat buffet last night?!’
The breakfast he had made was laid out on the living room table. As Claire Kendall ate, she looked at a message on her phone from Miles Warren.
"I’m heading to the Warren Group. Message me anytime if you need anything."
"Okay, Hubby!"
Before the work meeting started, Miles Warren’s phone vibrated. He opened the message, and when he saw the word "Hubby" on the screen, the corners of his mouth turned up involuntarily.
He tapped out a reply.
"I put some ointment on you yesterday. If it still hurts, apply a little more yourself."
’Jerk.’
Claire Kendall’s face flushed. She instinctively pressed her legs together and immediately shut off her phone.
The door to the Warren Pharma conference room was pushed open.
Several managers and old shareholders filed in one after another. Seeing Miles Warren staring down at his phone, one of them let out a soft snort.
"Kids these days... can’t live without their phones. Back in our day, who wasn’t reviewing the materials beforehand?"
A few of the other older men chuckled in agreement.
"He just dropped in from above. Does he think running a company is the same as performing surgery? A company isn’t an operating table where one cut finishes the job."
"If you mess up in a hospital, only one person dies. If you mess up a company, the livelihoods of so many employees are on the line."
"Louis Warren isn’t focused on our pharmaceutical division anymore. He can’t be bothered with this mess."
...
Miles Warren put down his phone, his expression unreadable. "Everyone, please have a seat."
The men sat down dismissively, their eyes filled with contempt as they looked at Miles Warren.
Miles Warren looked up, the faint hint of a smile from Claire Kendall’s text completely gone from his eyes.
He tapped his laptop, and a report on Warren Pharma’s performance over the last five years appeared on the large screen behind him.
"Warren Pharma was originally a well-established company. However, over the past five years, its revenue has decreased annually. In the last two years, its drugs have failed inspections, leading to more than five major recalls and losses amounting to 3.6 billion."
The men exchanged glances, not expecting this young upstart to lay down the law so directly.
The general manager tried to argue, "That’s not entirely fair. Plenty of pharma companies have gone under these past few years. We’ve done well just to maintain our position."
A faint smirk played on Miles Warren’s lips. He tapped his fingers on the table, his expression unchanging.
"When you’re all sipping tea, chatting, and figuring out how to mark up prices for your connections, it seems to me this business is actually quite easy to run."
His sharp, intimidating gaze swept over them one by one, slowly and deliberately.
Of the eleven people present, not one dared to meet his eyes.
"Do I need to lay the evidence out in front of you for you all to be willing to listen to what I have to say?"
The conference room fell deathly silent.
This involved pharmaceuticals. If they were truly reported and investigated, it wouldn’t be something a simple fine could resolve.
"Mr. Warren, that’s not what we meant..." A chorus of explanations and apologies rose from around the table.
Miles Warren raised a hand, signaling them to be quiet. He had his assistant distribute a planning document to everyone.
He opened to the first page. "I want all of you to read this carefully."
"Very carefully."
Miles Warren picked up his phone. He hadn’t received a new message from Claire Kendall.
"Does it still hurt? Want me to give you a back rub when I get home? Did you eat breakfast?"
「At OCHH.」
Claire Kendall was at her workstation sketching a design. She glanced at her phone and quickly sent a reply.
"Ate. No rub needed. It doesn’t hurt anymore."
"So... we continue tonight?"
Claire Kendall put her phone face down, ignoring him.
Beside her, a grinning Wendy White leaned in close.
"Claire, you seem to be in a great mood. You were glowing when you came in this morning. Did something good happen?"
Claire Kendall didn’t hide it, nodding. "It’ll probably take some time to prepare, but when it happens, I’ll definitely invite you all to celebrate."
The design studio erupted in a buzz of excitement. Everyone started guessing, their speculations growing bolder.
"Is the new Urban Traveler collection getting a re-release?"
"No, no, don’t tell me we’re being invited to a baby’s one-month celebration in ten months?"
"Hahahaha, I think that’s very likely! Nati and Dr. Warren are moving fast!"
...
BANG— The sound of the door being pushed open forcefully echoed through the room, immediately followed by Ian Rhodes’s low, sharp voice.
"What’s all this noise? Is your work all done?"
Before Claire Kendall could explain, the other designers scurried back to their seats, not daring to make a sound. Then, they started complaining furiously in their private group chat. For the past few days, the normally gentle Mr. Rhodes had been incredibly moody, as if something had gotten into him.
"Ian, what’s wrong?"
"Claire, this document needs your signature."
Claire Kendall took it, looked it over, and signed her name.
Ian Rhodes stood beside her. His gaze flickered to the side and he saw a picture of a wedding dress in her phone’s photo album—pure and beautiful.
’Claire... she’s going to have a wedding with Miles Warren?’
The red mark on her neck, deliberately covered with foundation, was so clear in his eyes.
Ian Rhodes’s expression remained neutral, but his fingers clenched into tight fists.
"There, is there anything else?"
A deep, dark look flashed in Ian Rhodes’s eyes, but it was gone in an instant, replaced by a smile.
"Nothing else, Claire."
"Oh, right. The OCHH supplier in Quillmore that makes the bows for the long dresses is having some issues. Should I find a new one?"
