Chapter 150: Chapter 150: I Didn’t Satisfy You?
???
Claire Kendall asked in confusion, "Dr. Warren, do you have a fever?"
"Aren’t we already married?"
They had gotten their marriage license three months ago. Technically, it was still "fresh."
Miles Warren shook his head, his breathing a little heavy.
"What I mean is, let’s have a wedding ceremony. We’ll announce it to your mother, to everyone."
"Invitations, a banquet, the ceremony—the whole nine yards. And maybe even..."
’Invite all your ex-boyfriends and seat them at one table.’ He really wanted to have a "heart-to-heart" with them, whether through threats or bribes.
’Anything to make them never appear before her again.’
Claire Kendall froze. Her eyes flickered, and for a moment, she thought she’d misheard him.
’Miles Warren was suggesting they have a ceremony?’
’It was so sudden. Why? Was it because of what happened at the old residence? Was he moved and wanted to treat her better? But she didn’t seem to need that kind of "responsibility."’
’Or had he completely gotten over Stella Locke? Did he want to build a life with her, to try and slowly fall for her?’
Miles Warren looked down at her, waiting for her answer.
Her eyes showed no ripple of emotion, only a hint of confusion. ’Is she resisting?’
His Adam’s apple bobbed. "If you don’t want to, if you think it’s too fast, we can wait," he said in a low voice.
"No need to wait." This time, her reply was swift. "Let’s do it. Right away!"
"I was just thinking, I’ll have to pick out a wedding dress. And do I need to prepare a speech?"
Claire Kendall’s lips curved into a smile. ’I shouldn’t overthink this. No matter why Miles Warren wants to have a wedding with me, it’s a huge step forward for our relationship!’
’If I just keep digging, I’m bound to uproot this old flame of his.’
"Are you sure?"
Claire Kendall nodded emphatically.
The light returned to Miles Warren’s darkened eyes, like a rekindled flame.
’He thought she wouldn’t agree.’
Just now, Wallace Sutton had told him that Jacob Sinclair was coming back from Quillmore. He had indeed panicked a little, and proposing the wedding ceremony was a product of that impulse.
’He never expected her to agree.’
"Should we book an outdoor venue for the wedding? I’ve always liked the beach and grassy lawns."
"It’s my first time getting married, so I don’t have any experience. I’m actually a little nervous just thinking about it..." she chattered on.
"Mm, whatever you want."
「That evening, at Regency Gardens.」
While Miles Warren showered in the bathroom, Claire Kendall was curled up on the sofa, looking at pictures of wedding dresses.
Her phone vibrated. It was a message from Sharon Carter.
[Holy crap, things are moving that fast? You’re having a ceremony? You guys are like the poster children for a successful marriage of convenience!]
Claire Kendall stared at the screen. ’Love? I’m not sure about that. But when two people spend enough time together, feelings are bound to develop, right?’
She subconsciously glanced toward the bathroom. ’Even if no feelings have "developed," we’ve certainly been "doing it" for a while now.’
[Girl, I’ve gotta give you a boost. I’m sending you a file package. Go download it from the cloud drive and study it well. They’re all classics I’ve hand-picked!]
Claire Kendall, not understanding, curiously copied the link and opened the cloud drive.
After unzipping the file, she scrolled with her thumb. Row after row of spicy book titles made her heart race and her face flush red.
’What is this stuff! I was sharing my good news, and Sharon’s mind is filled with this kind of smutty, hardcore content?’
’Over a thousand books? How is that "hand-picked"?’
Just as Claire Kendall was about to put her phone away, Miles Warren walked out, drying his hair.
She looked up and met his gaze, then immediately, guiltily, slapped the phone face-down against her chest with a THWAP.
Seeing her flustered movement, Miles Warren’s heart sank. He kept his voice calm. "What are you hiding?"
"Texting someone?"
"Um... no, no," Claire Kendall nodded and then shook her head, looking utterly flustered—the very picture of someone caught doing something wrong.
Miles Warren straightened up, his expression unreadable, his eyes darkening slightly.
Wallace Sutton’s words from earlier that day echoed in his mind: Jacob Sinclair was coming back.
’So she...?’
Miles Warren didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but his jaw clenched involuntarily.
He didn’t want to invade her privacy, but this anxiety was torture.
After a moment’s hesitation, he held out his hand to Claire Kendall and crooked his finger, gesturing for her to hand over the phone.
"Maybe not... There’s really nothing to see..."
She tried to argue, but when she looked up and met Miles Warren’s heavy, deep-set eyes, she caved after a few seconds of standoff.
Resigned to her fate, Claire Kendall placed the phone in his hand, her face feeling a little hot.
She chanted silently in her head: ’We’re both adults. What’s the big deal about looking at this stuff? Why am I so scared?’
It wasn’t that she was being coy; it was just that the stuff Sharon had sent was far more intense than your average erotica.
Miles Warren’s fingers were cool as he swiped the screen open.
Even for a man who had seen it all, the sight of the dense, indescribable text on the screen made him freeze on the spot.
He held the phone, stared at the screen, then looked up and let out a laugh that was more exasperation than amusement.
"Claire Kendall, do I not satisfy you?"
...
’She had been completely wronged!’
"Group sex? The male neighbor next door?"
As he read the salacious words out loud, one by one, Claire Kendall felt her face grow even hotter.
’An aloof, abstinent man reading smut was just too much. His voice... was actually kind of perfect for narrating this sort of thing.’
Miles Warren’s long fingers tapped the screen.
"And this one. ’My Husband Wants Me Every Day in His Arms? I Can’t Stop...’"
Claire Kendall wanted to cover his mouth, to get on her knees and beg him to stop reading.
’Could anything be more embarrassing than this?’
Miles Warren turned off the phone, tossed it aside, and suddenly moved closer.
He pressed down on top of her, the sofa sinking under his weight. Claire Kendall was completely trapped beneath him.
The man’s warm breath ghosted over her ear. She couldn’t help but tremble, turning her head away as she struggled to explain.
"That stuff really isn’t mine. Sharon Carter sent it to me."
"Mm," Miles Warren responded faintly, his lips already on her neck. "Then thank her for me..."
As he kissed her, his hand climbed to her soft chest, kneading gently, then firmly.
Claire Kendall’s body went limp. He knew her too well; she couldn’t withstand even the slightest bit of his teasing.
Miles Warren continued downward, biting her through the thin fabric of her pajamas.
"What’s the point of reading about it? Isn’t hands-on practice a better way to experience it?"
’He was so bad.’
’So bad that Claire Kendall felt powerless to resist or refute him.’
He was the kind of person who looked as pure as the moon and as gentle as the breeze, yet he could say the most wicked things.
She was burning up.
"Miles Warren, can I go take a shower first, please?"
He released her and moved aside. "Fine."
Claire Kendall tried to slip out from under his arm.
The next second, his hand clamped down on her waist and pulled her back.
"Fine. We’ll shower together."
Inside the bathroom, amid the billowing steam, Claire Kendall’s back was pressed against the tile. The contrast of hot and cold was torturous.
「An hour later.」
Claire Kendall was carried out of the bathroom.
She had no strength left, unable to move a muscle.
Miles Warren took her hand and kissed it. "Good girl. I have to trouble you one more time."
