Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 156: Should Give Him a Good Beating

Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Should Give Him a Good Beating

The rain had stopped. The factory complex in the western suburbs was a complete mess. The police tape hadn’t been taken down, and the relevant authorities had arrived on the scene.

The fire had raged for nearly two days and two nights. Although there were no fatalities, it was still classified as a major incident, requiring further investigation and a public disclosure of its cause.

After going through the formalities with the staff, Claire Kendall went back to Regency Gardens to change. She then packed a change of clothes for Miles Warren and headed to the hospital.

「The study of the old Warren family estate.」

A row of Warren Pharma shareholders sat in wooden chairs on either side of the room.

Felix Warren, however, was sitting in a rocking chair. Still wrapped in bandages from his injuries, he stared at a tablet on his lap, which was playing a video of the accident at the factory in the western suburbs.

He commented nonchalantly, "My poor, weeping aunt. It’s truly a heartbreaking sight."

The shareholders and executives looked at one another, all of them sighing.

’What on earth was Victor Warren thinking, bringing back such a dissolute son to seize power?’

"Mr. Warren, as long as Miles Warren is around, there’s no way for us to get the drug out."

"This month’s dividends probably won’t even be a fraction of last month’s."

...

Felix Warren tsked impatiently. "You bunch of old fools. You’ve lived all these years for nothing."

"You..." Several of them were so enraged their faces went pale, leaving them speechless.

Felix Warren tapped the screen. "Dad, something’s off about Miles Warren’s reaction. Does he have any kind of noteworthy medical history?"

Victor Warren frowned and shook his head. "I’ve never heard anything. From the day he was born, the Old Man raised him separately and protected him very well. He didn’t leave the Warren family’s side until he went to university."

"Ohh—" Felix Warren tossed the tablet aside and stood up. The movement pulled at his back, and he grimaced in pain.

"Have someone look into it. We might be able to dig up something useful."

Victor Warren immediately arranged to have it done.

「Aethel General Hospital.」

Miles Warren was already awake. He was sitting up, leaning against the headboard, unconsciously rubbing his fingertips together.

"Did she see it?"

’Did she see me when I had an episode, when I was like a madman, completely out of control?’

Jonathan Keller nodded and grunted in affirmation.

"But I didn’t say anything, so she shouldn’t know."

"If you just agree to the divorce and stay away from her, you’ll recover quickly."

Without looking up, he spoke in a low, unhurried voice, his tone cold and indifferent.

"I can’t divorce her. And I can’t stay away."

He couldn’t bear the thought of letting her go, of watching her smile beside another man.

Jonathan Keller sighed. "So you’re just going to keep taking medication behind her back?"

"We’ll manage it like this for now. It worked before, didn’t it?"

Miles Warren pulled open the drawer and took his medicine. His tone was casual, as if it were a routine occurrence.

Suddenly, the door to the hospital room was pushed open a crack, and a hand holding a takeout bag reached in tentatively.

Miles Warren recognized the hand in a single glance.

Claire Kendall was wearing a blue diamond ring. His heart skipped a beat.

He should have been happy, yet he felt no joy.

He was afraid he would lose control right now.

’Tainting her, breaking her... she would be terrified.’

Claire Kendall squeezed through the door. When Jonathan Keller saw her, he shot her a disdainful glance. He didn’t dare say anything too harsh in front of Miles Warren, so he resorted to sarcasm.

"Well, well. Look who decided to show up. Finally done with all your busy work?"

Claire acted as if she hadn’t heard him, her eyes fixed on the man in the bed.

She walked to the side of the bed and opened the bag. "I bought some light porridge and snacks. Want to try some?"

"Does your hand still hurt?"

She leaned forward, but the moment her fingertips touched his bandages, Miles instinctively pulled his hand back in a reflex action, not letting her touch him.

Claire Kendall’s fingers froze in mid-air, twitching slightly.

To Miles, she looked just like Clementine begging for a treat, only to be refused.

The air in the room grew heavy and still.

Miles Warren kept his eyes downcast, his long lashes hiding the emotions within them.

After a long moment, he slowly raised his gaze to meet hers. His eyes were as placid as a pool of stagnant water.

"I’m not hungry. You should go home and rest."

Just a few words. They were meant to show concern, yet they sounded so cold and distant.

A bitter feeling welled up in Claire’s heart.

"I’m not tired. I don’t need to rest. I’ll stay here and keep you company. Dr. Keller, you can go home and get some rest."

She started to pour the porridge into a bowl to feed him.

But Jonathan Keller walked right over, grabbed her arm without explanation, and started pulling her toward the door.

"Alright, that’s enough. We’ll both leave. Let Miles Warren get some quiet rest."

"He can’t rest properly with you here."

The door closed behind them, and the smell of antiseptic from the hallway washed over them.

Claire Kendall didn’t move, stubbornly leaning against the wall.

Jonathan Keller’s brow was tightly furrowed as he hesitated, choosing his words carefully.

"You shouldn’t come by for a while. He needs..."

"Needs what?"

"Just don’t come, okay? Your being here is detrimental to his recovery." Without another word of explanation, Jonathan Keller turned and walked away.

Claire Kendall remained where she stood. Exhausted from rushing about day and night, her legs felt weak. She leaned against the wall and slowly sank into a squat.

’My husband is still in there. I can’t leave.’

’If he won’t let me in, then I’ll wait out here!’

Claire Kendall hugged her knees, resting her chin on her arms. She looked like an abandoned cub.

She didn’t know how long she had been squatting there when a pair of pristine white nurse’s shoes stopped in front of her.

"Ms. Kendall?" The young nurse looked down at her, a little surprised. "Why are you squatting out here? Professor Warren, he..."

Claire Kendall looked up, blinked rapidly, and immediately pushed herself up by her knees to stand.

She staggered for a moment before quickly steadying herself.

"Oh, um... I got tired of lying down in there, so I came out to stretch my legs."

"Just doing a few squats to get the blood flowing."

As she spoke, Claire clasped her hands behind her head and began to exercise, muttering a cadence under her breath.

"One, two, three, four... two, two, three, four..."

The nurse gave her a suspicious look, then glanced at the closed door behind her. "All right, then. I thought you and Professor Warren... Anyway, I’ll get back to my duties."

"HUP, HUP—"

Claire didn’t stop doing squats until the young nurse’s figure had disappeared completely around the corner. She stopped, panting from exhaustion.

’No one can find out that Miles wouldn’t let me in. If word got out, it would be bad for Dr. Warren’s reputation.’

’Right now, her one and only rule was: husband above all!’

The soundproofing on the hospital room door wasn’t very good, and fragments of their conversation drifted in.

Hearing her soft, deliberately hushed voice, Miles Warren’s brow immediately furrowed.

’It’s been two hours. She still hasn’t left?’

’If I try to force her away now, it’ll probably just make her more suspicious.’

Miles Warren closed his eyes, and his Adam’s apple bobbed.

He glanced at the mood stabilizers in the drawer, then looked away and reached for the phone on his nightstand.

His finger scrolled through his contacts before he dialed a number.

"Dr. Payne, could you have a temporary cot sent to the hallway outside Ward 406?"

"With a blanket. Make it as soft as possible."

’She’s always been so delicate.’

’Every part of her, from head to toe.’

Ten minutes later, a nurse from the inpatient ward wheeled over a temporary cot.

It came with two blankets—special treatment.

Claire Kendall rubbed her nose. She knew this was Miles’s doing.

’Caring for me one minute, giving me the cold shoulder the next. What a difficult man.’

’He just needs to be thoroughly screwed to make him behave!’
