Tempting Him to Lose Control
Chapter 157: A Mouth Is for Kissing My HusbandChapter 157: Chapter 157: A Mouth Is for Kissing My Husband
Claire Kendall’s fingertips brushed across the brand-new bedspread. ’There’s no way I’m just going to sleep out here.’
She tiptoed to the hospital room door and turned the handle.
CLICK, CLACK—
It sounded twice but didn’t budge an inch.
’It’s locked??’
Claire Kendall stared blankly at the doorknob for a good while, then let out a laugh of exasperation.
’Is he treating me like a thief? Is Miles Warren that dead set on making me leave?’
She wasn’t having it.
She took a step back, bumped against the door, and cried out, "Ouch!" Then she started whimpering about how much it hurt.
Her voice wasn’t too loud or too soft, just enough for the person inside the room to hear clearly.
In less than thirty seconds, the door opened.
The moment the door opened a crack, Claire Kendall dove headfirst into Miles Warren’s arms.
The man let out a muffled grunt from the impact, but his hand still instinctively wrapped around her waist to steady her. He met her sly gaze and knew she was faking it.
Miles Warren lifted her off him, his gaze cold and distant. "Go back. I don’t need you here."
"I’m not going back." Claire Kendall looked up at him, her fingers hooking onto his hospital gown as she pushed him two steps toward the bed.
"There’s no one in the hallway. It’s so cold and creepy. Are you trying to freeze me to death so you can replace me with someone younger?"
"Hmph. You can forget about it." Claire Kendall took the opportunity to push him down onto the bed.
Her tone softened. "About that divorce agreement... I can explain."
"I thought Stella Locke was the one you never got over. Now that she’s back in the country, I figured you were going to divorce me, so I thought I might as well strike first."
Claire Kendall sniffled, feeling a little guilty. "But after I had the lawyer draft it, I could never bring myself to give it to you."
"The divorce agreement was never an exit strategy. I’m sitting in the position of Mrs. Warren right now, and I have no intention of backing down."
Her voice was delicate and soft, yet stubborn and sincere.
Miles Warren’s large hand landed on the small of her back, gripping her tightly. "Who told you that?"
She whispered, "Everyone was saying it."
His voice was strained. "Why didn’t you just ask me? You have a mouth for a reason."
Claire Kendall lowered her head, pressing her forehead against his. "Well, aren’t I talking now?"
"Besides, Dr. Warren, I saw those love letters."
He was silent for a moment, his breathing growing heavier. "So why did you choose Jacob Sinclair back then? Why not me?"
Claire Kendall froze. ’Damn my big mouth,’ she thought. ’Always touching on the sorest subject.’
’Should I just lay my cards on the table? Tell him I didn’t even know him back then, that not a single word in those love letters was sincere, and that he was just a tool for me to make money?’
Claire Kendall met Miles Warren’s gaze, the truth caught in her throat.
She spouted a random excuse, "Well, back then, I just... I felt like I wasn’t good enough for you."
"Since I wasn’t good enough for you, I didn’t dare get close to you." Claire Kendall blinked, feigning sincerity.
"Stop fooling around. Get off."
"Ohhh—" Claire Kendall drew out the sound. "Then you have to let go of me first."
Miles Warren gritted his teeth. "Where am I grabbing you?"
Claire Kendall’s gaze drifted downward.
She said in a low voice, "Dr. Warren, you’re still mad at me, aren’t you? You can be mad, but please don’t ignore me, okay?"
He grunted. "Get up."
"Does that mean you agree?"
"Fine," Miles Warren conceded.
"MWAH! Looks like Dr. Warren is pretty easy to coax after all."
Claire Kendall got off him, glanced at a certain spot, and reached down to touch it.
"Hubby, let me help you~"
"Claire Kendall!"
Two voices, one male and one female, called her name at the same time.
"Claire Kendall!"
In the dead of night, the hospital room door was pushed open. Shirley Kendall stood at the entrance, carrying large and small bags of gifts and fruit.
She stared at the scene before her, stunned for several seconds before it registered.
"Claire Kendall, you... why are you on Dr. Warren’s bed? What... what are you doing!"
"Mom? What are you doing here in the middle of the night?" Claire Kendall snatched her hand back and immediately scrambled off the bed.
Shirley Kendall didn’t even bother with her bags, immediately pulling Claire Kendall aside to scold her.
"If I hadn’t come in the middle of the night, I never would have known you were so... so... Ugh!"
She had heard that Dr. Warren was hospitalized when she picked up medicine that afternoon. She felt uneasy after getting home, so she bought some things and came over, planning to just leave them at the door so as not to disturb him.
But then, she heard her own daughter’s voice from outside the door! Calling him "hubby" over and over... it was just indecent.
On the hospital bed, Miles Warren’s eyes darkened. ’Just as I thought. Shirley Kendall still doesn’t know we’re married.’ He had never pushed the issue, afraid of pressuring Claire, but he couldn’t believe she really hadn’t said a word about it.
"Dr. Warren, I’m so sorry to disturb you. It’s my fault for not raising my daughter properly."
Shirley Kendall rushed over and grabbed Claire Kendall.
"You, come with me! We’re going home!"
"Mrs. Kendall, it has nothing to do with Claire. It was my oversight..." Miles Warren tried to get up to stop her but was pushed away by Shirley Kendall.
He was still very weak and tumbled back onto the bed. Claire Kendall rushed over to support him.
"Mom, don’t touch him!"
"Miles Warren and I are already married!"
The single sentence exploded in the room like a clap of thunder.
Miles Warren looked at her. He had thought she would keep it a secret for longer.
"Mom, I know it was wrong to hide this from you, but Miles Warren and I have already registered our marriage. Whether you approve or not, I’m going to be with him."
Half an hour later, Shirley Kendall had finally processed and accepted the fact that her daughter was suddenly married.
Miles Warren and Claire Kendall sat side-by-side across from her, like schoolchildren waiting to be lectured.
After a long silence, Shirley Kendall finally spoke. "Dr. Warren, I’ve known you for a long time. I know what kind of person you are, and I trust that you will be good to my daughter."
"But for the two of you to just get married quietly like this, without even a wedding... that’s just not acceptable."
Claire Kendall’s heart sank.
’They had indeed been planning a wedding.’
’It was just that her little divorce agreement stunt had ruined it.’
’Bringing it up now would be like forcing Miles’s hand.’
"Mom, about the wedding, we can..."
"The wedding is already in the planning stages," Miles Warren interrupted Claire. "Don’t worry, we won’t skip a single step of the proper proceedings."
Claire Kendall quickly chimed in, "Mom, don’t worry. I even went to try on wedding dresses a few days ago. Look, what do you think of these styles?"
"Let’s talk outside. Dr. Warren is injured, and it’s so late. He needs to rest." Claire Kendall shot a look at Miles, then cajoled and coaxed Shirley Kendall out the door and back home.
Claire Kendall lay in the small bedroom, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
’Is Miles’s wound hurting? Has he forgiven me? Is he still angry?’
She sent Miles a message. She saw the "typing..." indicator appear in the chat window, but after a long moment, no message came through.
’He’s definitely still mad. I’ll call him and keep trying to sweet-talk him.’
Claire Kendall dialed his number. It rang for quite a while before the call connected.
"Dr. Warren, why didn’t you text me back?"
"I was busy."
"But you weren’t sleeping."
"My hands were full."
