Chapter 158: Chapter 158: Wedding Dress Fitting
Claire Kendall understood instantly, the tips of her ears burning red.
He looked so cool and stoic, yet he always flirted with her with such a straight face.
She bit her lip. "I can’t come see you tomorrow morning. I already told the caregiver to bring you brunch."
"I have to go to the bridal shop tomorrow to try on my wedding dress again."
"Okay, got it."
"You... get some rest." Hearing his hoarse voice, Claire Kendall quickly hung up the phone.
She rolled over in bed, the unease in her heart instantly vanishing. ’Are Miles Warren and I considered reconciled now?’
The next day, Claire Kendall went to Amanda Vaughn’s bridal shop. Even if she wasn’t getting her dress custom-made there anymore, she had to get her deposit back. She had no intention of being a sucker.
"Ms. Kendall, you’re here." The shop assistant recognized her and was exceedingly respectful.
"The style you chose last time has been custom-made. Would you like to try it on?"
Claire Kendall froze for a moment. She and Amanda Vaughn had parted on bad terms last time, so she’d assumed the matter of the dress was dropped. ’Amanda actually went ahead and made it?’
As a designer herself, Claire Kendall knew the process wasn’t easy. A wedding dress was time-consuming and labor-intensive. Since it was already made, she couldn’t just abandon it over a few arguments.
She nodded. "Okay, thank you."
"It’s my pleasure, Ms. Kendall. This way, please."
Inside the spacious fitting room, the assistant first brought over a strapless, sweep-train reception gown.
"Ms. Kendall, you can try this one on first. I’ll go get the wedding gown."
"Okay." Claire Kendall took it, undressed, and began to change.
She pulled the long dress on, but it suddenly got stuck at her chest.
The fabric was stretched taut against her skin, and she couldn’t fasten it at all.
Claire Kendall tried several times, but failed each time.
"Hello? Are you there? Could you come in and help me with the dress?"
The fitting room door was pushed open.
The person placed a hand on her waist and slowly pulled up the hidden zipper.
A warm, slightly rough, calloused touch grazed the skin of her back.
Claire Kendall jumped in surprise and spun around.
"Miles Warren?"
"You... What are you doing here?"
Her body stiffened, and she instinctively covered her chest.
He had just been discharged from the hospital, so he didn’t look as well as usual. His hands were still wrapped in gauze, and his well-defined fingers were pressing against the skin of her back.
The man lowered his gaze, his eyes landing on her soft chest.
"Turn back around."
He tried a few more times, but it really wouldn’t go up. With the strapless design, it didn’t even cover half of her chest.
Claire Kendall frowned and muttered, "The measurements I sent were correct. Amanda is an experienced designer; she wouldn’t make a rookie mistake like getting the size wrong."
"Could it be that I’ve been eating too well lately and gained weight?"
’How else could it not fit!’
The man behind her withdrew his hand, his gaze shifting away.
"You’re not fat. It must be a problem with the dress."
Claire Kendall gave up, took it off, and changed back into her own clothes.
Miles Warren’s phone rang. He stepped aside and answered it. From what Claire Kendall could overhear, it seemed to be about the pharmaceutical company.
She turned around and neatly hung up the gown. Suddenly, an extremely furious clamor erupted from outside the fitting room.
"Who told you to give her that gown? How many times do I have to say it? That one isn’t hers! Are you deaf?"
The shop assistant apologized profusely, the sound interspersed with... SLAP! SLAP! ...the sound of someone being slapped.
Claire Kendall frowned and immediately stepped out of the fitting room.
Outside, the assistant who had just brought Claire Kendall the gown had a badly swollen cheek and was sobbing. "Amanda, I... I’m sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose."
"I was the one who asked to try on the dress. It has nothing to do with her. The style also happens to be the one I chose, so there must have been a misunderstanding. I’ll cover any damages from trying it on."
Amanda Vaughn sneered, her gaze sweeping over Claire Kendall.
"Cover the damages? Easy for you to say. This gown was a custom order for Stella, and Miles Warren specifically sent someone to pay for it in full."
"You tried it on, so now it’s dirty!"
"I’m surprised you even dared to show your face here. Aren’t you ashamed of being a homewrecker? Even if you’re trying to marry up, you should have some standards!"
Amanda Vaughn grew more agitated as she yelled, directly grabbing Claire Kendall, yanking at her clothes, and shoving her hard.
Caught off guard, Claire Kendall stumbled back into a metal mannequin stand, scraping her arm. Her brows knitted together, and her eyes turned cold.
"Amanda Vaughn, don’t go too far."
"Too far? You’re going to get on your knees, kowtow, and apologize to me today! Apologize to the gown you just tried on! It’s filthy! How is Stella supposed to wear it now?"
Amanda Vaughn ordered arrogantly, "You lot, go lock the door."
"She’s not leaving this shop today unless she kneels!"
Several employees obeyed, immediately locking the shop door and surrounding Claire Kendall.
"Say something! Aren’t you always so stubborn?" Amanda Vaughn swung her hand to slap Claire Kendall, but her wrist was intercepted mid-air.
Amanda Vaughn’s wrist was squeezed so tightly it audibly cracked. She cried out, grimacing in pain, and was forced to stagger back several steps by the sheer force.
Miles Warren stood in front of Claire Kendall, his other hand already steadying her. He looked down at her forearm, which was lightly bleeding, and his brow furrowed into an ugly scowl.
"Open the door."
Terrified by his dark, menacing gaze, the assistants immediately went to unlock the door.
Seeing him, Amanda Vaughn was both shocked and furious. "Miles Warren, what are you doing here?"
"I’m here with my wife to try on her wedding dress. Where else should I be?"
Miles Warren paused, his voice turning grim. "And when did I ever tell you that dress was custom-made for Stella Locke?"
Amanda Vaughn’s mouth fell open, her incredulous gaze darting back and forth between the two of them.
"Last week, I had Jonathan Keller come here to pay the remaining balance for the wedding dress Claire Kendall chose. It had nothing to do with Stella Locke."
Amanda Vaughn was flustered and exasperated.
"How is that possible? Miles Warren, you’ve had a change of heart! Stella was the one you never got over! How can a substitute take her place?"
"Stella Locke and I are just friends. She’s not ’the one I never got over,’ and she’s certainly not my other half."
"My wife has only ever been Claire Kendall. You are the one who made the wrong dress and then threatened my wife."
Miles Warren looked up, a fierce glint in his otherwise calm eyes.
"My wife... You think she’s easy to bully?"
"I..." Amanda Vaughn’s face paled. She gritted her teeth. "That’s not what I meant."
"Starting today, this shop is closed. You can discuss any remaining matters with my lawyer."
Amanda Vaughn’s face turned white. "On what grounds? I’m Stella Locke’s friend! You can’t do this to me!"
"Then go tell her that I shut down her friend’s shop." Miles Warren took Claire Kendall’s hand and started to walk out.
"You... Miles Warren! I’m calling Stella right now! Let’s see if you dare say all that again to her face!"
Amanda Vaughn shrieked as she dialed the number. "I don’t believe you have the heart to make her this angry!"
