Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Not Even a Chance to Rise Up
Claire Kendall sat on the edge of the bed, swinging her pale, delicate feet. She looked up at Miles Warren, her voice tinged with a coquettish tone.
"Dr. Warren, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you."
"Go ahead."
"Um..." Claire Kendall pinched the corner of his white coat with her fingertips. "About my mother’s surgery... could you please keep it confidential?"
She added, "I mean, the kind that no one can ever trace. You have connections everywhere; you must have a way."
’Concealing a patient’s medical and surgical history wasn’t particularly difficult.’
He looked down at her, his gaze lowered. "Why?"
"Because... I just don’t want other people to know." Claire Kendall blinked. "We’ve been spending so much time together, I’m afraid people will gossip and ruin your good name, Dr. Warren."
Miles Warren’s expression was blank. "The surgical procedure was legal and by the book. There’s nothing to be afraid of if someone investigates."
Claire Kendall slid off the bed, moving closer and tugging on the corner of his coat.
"Dr. Warren, please help me. You see, I’m always coming to the hospital. I don’t want to hear all the rumors and gossip."
The end of her sentence lilted upwards, soft and sweet as if soaked in honey.
’Her request sounded completely unreasonable.’
But when he met her glistening, puppy-dog eyes, Miles Warren couldn’t bring himself to say no.
"Okay," he agreed with a slight nod.
Claire Kendall’s brow immediately relaxed. "I knew you were the best to me, Dr. Warren."
"You saved my mom’s life. How can I ever repay such a huge debt of gratitude?"
She purred, "I’m the kind of person who always repays her debts. So, how about—"
She drew out her words, rising slightly on her tiptoes, her breath warm against him.
"I repay you with my body!"
Miles Warren’s gaze fell on her face, which was alight with a sly smile. He was silent for two seconds before quietly speaking two words.
"No need."
Claire Kendall’s tone was dissatisfied. "Why? Dr. Warren, are you looking down on me?"
"No."
She pressed on relentlessly. "If you’re not looking down on me, then you must like me. And if you like me, you have to marry me."
Miles Warren sat back down behind his desk, his voice laced with resignation.
"Claire Kendall, what kind of twisted logic is that?"
"So timid. You’re a coward," Claire Kendall said, her voice sullen. "Nothing more to say. I’m going home to sleep."
She put on her shoes, grabbed her bag, and walked out without a backward glance.
She paused at the door and tossed a curt "Good night" over her shoulder.
Miles Warren stared after her, frozen in place. He sent a message to the butler at the family estate, telling him to take care of Shirley Kendall’s medical records.
Claire Kendall returned to Regency Gardens in a huff.
Just as she walked in the door, her phone vibrated. She opened it to see a message from Miles Warren.
[Your mother’s medical records have been handled. No one will be able to trace the surgery back to me.]
[I put the allergy medicine in your bag. Take one pill after your meal. If it’s still itchy, call me anytime.]
Staring at her phone screen, Claire Kendall’s anger dissipated.
But she only grew more confused.
’Miles Warren clearly cares about me, so why won’t he just agree to be with me?’
Claire Kendall looked up at her reflection in the bathroom mirror.
’A slim waist, full breasts, a perky butt, and this beautiful face... how could Miles Warren possibly—’
Her expression froze.
’My face?’
Claire Kendall suddenly understood.
’It’s because of this face. I look like the one he never got over, the one who hurt him. That’s why he won’t be with me.’
Steam filled the air as Claire Kendall poked at her reflection in the mirror.
’Just who the hell is this "one he never got over"? To reject a top-tier man like Miles Warren... she must have been blind!’
’A stand-in is just a stand-in, I guess. I don’t even get a chance to become the real thing...’
’Whatever. There’s no use overthinking it. I’ll just take it one step at a time.’
Claire Kendall left the bathroom, dried herself off, and had just snuggled into the sofa when her phone began to vibrate as if its life depended on it.
The caller ID read: Howard Kendall.
Her brows furrowed. After a moment’s hesitation, she answered.
"Claire... Claire..." Howard Kendall’s trembling, pleading voice came from the other end. "Dad invested with some people and got scammed. The company’s gone, and I’m a billion in debt. Help me, Claire. You can’t just abandon me."
He sobbed and begged.
Claire Kendall was unmoved.
’Back in high school, she had knelt on the ground, begging him not to kick her and her mother out. But he did it anyway, moving Martha Morris and Chloe Kendall in to take their place.’
Claire Kendall’s voice was ice-cold.
"Howard Kendall, we already severed our father-daughter relationship."
Seeing her unyielding attitude, Howard Kendall instantly dropped his hypocritical mask.
He was furious, his voice trembling. "Claire Kendall, I raised you all these years! You have to give me the money."
Claire Kendall’s voice was calm. "I don’t have any money."
"How could you not have money! First you hooked up with Jacob Sinclair, and now you’re messing around with the heir of the Warren family! A billion or so is nothing to him, just a drop in the bucket!"
"Hah," Claire Kendall sneered. "I’d rather burn the money than give it to you. You made this mess, you clean it up."
"Claire Kendall, you ungrateful daughter—"
Claire Kendall hung up and immediately blocked his number.
’She did have some money.’
’The Wexall Textile Mill’s Flowing Light Brocade and Moonstone’s clothing lines had both started turning a profit.’
She opened her investment account and looked at the ample balance—a full fifty million.
’Finally, the time has come.’
A chilling glint flashed in Claire Kendall’s eyes. She took out her phone and sent a message to Jacob Sinclair.
-
The Kendall Family villa.
The living room was a disaster. The coffee table had been kicked over, and shattered teacups littered the floor.
Howard Kendall’s eyes were bloodshot as he panted heavily. "Bitches! A bunch of bitches!"
"’Internal hospital resources’? ’Medical equipment investments’? It was all fake!" Howard Kendall grabbed his hair in agony.
The business he had spent twenty years building was gone, turned to ash overnight.
Martha Morris’s face was pale. "Howard, is there really nothing we can do?"
"I’ve borrowed what I can, pawned what I can, sold what I can... If I wasn’t at my wits’ end, do you think I would have provoked that man from the Warren family?"
"And that little bitch Claire Kendall refuses to help. What else can I do?"
Howard Kendall threw his phone.
His gaze landed on Chloe Kendall. "At the last reception, wasn’t that Mr. Holt interested in Claire Kendall? Since she won’t do it, you go!"
Chloe Kendall’s face turned white, and she trembled violently. "Dad, that Mr. Holt is in his fifties! He’s bald, has yellow teeth, and he’s a total pervert! I... I won’t go!"
Martha Morris grabbed her daughter’s hand. "But he’s rich! He can save the Kendall family. All the nice food you eat and nice clothes you wear, wasn’t it all paid for with your dad’s money? Now that the family is in trouble, you should do your part!"
Chloe Kendall was shocked, unable to believe her own mother was pushing her into a pit of fire.
"I won’t do it! I won’t!" Chloe Kendall shook her head frantically. "If someone has to go, you go!"
Howard Kendall slapped her across the face. "Useless girl! You’re going whether you want to or not! Keep Mr. Holt happy, and even if you only get one or two million out of it, that’s something!"
Martha Morris lowered her voice. "Howard, Claire Kendall must have money. If she won’t help willingly, we can force her to."
Howard Kendall nodded emphatically. "Right. We have to find a way to make her cough up the money."
