Tempting Him to Lose Control
Chapter 67: Holding His Arm, A Match Made in HeavenChapter 67: Chapter 67: Holding His Arm, A Match Made in Heaven
Miles’s eyes froze, his jaw tightening.
Yet, late at night, he couldn’t stop replaying that absurd night in his mind.
He had been like a vile, unbridled beast, wanting only to defile her, to take her without a shred of restraint.
’He must have been insane.’
Outwardly, the man remained placid, coolly averting his gaze. "How taxing for you to remember it so clearly. I’ve already forgotten."
"Is that so?"
Claire Kendall leisurely leaned in, rising onto her toes until the tip of her nose nearly brushed his chin.
"But Dr. Warren, your ears are red. Lying isn’t a good habit, you know."
The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and his body grew even more rigid.
Claire Kendall was secretly delighted.
’How wicked of me,’ she thought. ’I just love seeing him like this—flustered, with no retort and no escape.’
—
Inside the hospital room.
Richard Linden looked at his daughter on the hospital bed, seething with anger.
"Pregnant out of wedlock, and you nearly miscarried! You’ve completely disgraced me!"
Rosalind Linden’s face was pale, but as she caressed her lower abdomen, her expression was calm and self-satisfied.
"Dad, I’m carrying Miles Warren’s child—the precious heir to the Warrens of Aethel."
"Who will we have to answer to then? And haven’t you always wanted to expand the hospital? With the Warren Family backing us, that won’t be a problem!"
Richard Linden looked troubled. "But Miles Warren has always been in love with that Claire Kendall!"
Rosalind Linden smiled faintly. "It doesn’t matter who he loves. What I want is the title of Mrs. Warren."
"All I have to do is make a big enough scene that everyone knows about it. To save the Warren Family’s reputation, Miles Warren will have no choice but to marry me."
She declared smugly, "And my son will be the heir to the Warren Group."
"Dad, go get a few more doctors in here. Once the news gets out, how can Miles Warren possibly deny it?"
Richard Linden pondered for a moment before nodding. "I’ll go arrange it now."
The news spread through the hospital like wildfire.
"Have you heard? Dr. Linden is pregnant with Dr. Warren’s baby!"
"No way! Dr. Warren always seems so stoic and proper..."
"He’s a man, though. Who can say? Besides, they were classmates in college. A secret relationship wouldn’t be that strange."
The door to the VIP room swung open.
Several renowned OB/GYN specialists were crowded inside. Richard Linden had even invited a retired professor to help review the scans.
Miles Warren pushed through the crowd, his face grim.
Seeing him, Rosalind Linden’s face lit up. "Miles, you’re here! Don’t worry, the specialists all say the baby is very resilient and wasn’t harmed."
The senior doctors all recognized Miles Warren and began to congratulate him.
"Congratulations, Dr. Warren!"
"Louis Warren must be over the moon."
"She’s young and healthy. A good rest is all she needs, there won’t be any major problems."
...
As everyone chattered at once, a blissful smile spread across Rosalind Linden’s face.
Miles Warren’s expression was glacial as he cut them off.
"Dr. Linden, there must be some misunderstanding. This child has nothing to do with me."
The smile on Rosalind Linden’s face froze. Everyone else in the room was stunned into silence.
Rosalind Linden bit her lip. "Miles, how can you say that?"
"The night of the International Medical Summit... you were drunk. You forced me to be with you..."
Her eyes welled with tears, and her voice trailed off.
Richard Linden stepped forward, his tone firm. "Miles Warren, I’m just a doctor who saves lives. I can’t compete with the power of the Warren Family."
"But I won’t stand by and let you take advantage of my daughter and cast her aside! She’s pregnant with your child, and you still refuse to take responsibility?"
Miles Warren shot him a cold glance. "Richard Linden, you’re a senior in the medical community. Are you really going to take her word for it and declare this child is mine without a paternity test?"
"Miles," Rosalind Linden’s voice trembled as she pressed a hand to her stomach. "Are you trying to force me to get an amniocentesis?"
"How can you be so heartless? It’s still too early in the pregnancy; the risk is too high!"
The door to the room was open, and a crowd was gathering in the hallway, their whispers growing louder.
"Wow, Dr. Warren is being so cruel!"
"He acts so righteous, but he’s just another rich brat. Figures you can’t change their nature."
"So cold-hearted..."
Suddenly, a cool, clear voice cut through the crowd.
"Enough."
Claire Kendall walked into the hospital room.
All eyes converged on her.
When Rosalind Linden saw her, her tears fell even faster. "It’s because of you that Miles is refusing to take responsibility, isn’t it?"
"If you insist on staying tangled up with him, I can get rid of this baby to make way for you two."
Rosalind Linden sobbed, her face a mask of pain. "But Miles, you can’t refuse to acknowledge him."
Instantly, all gazes, now filled with scorn and disapproval, shifted to Claire Kendall.
Miles Warren instinctively stepped forward to shield her.
Claire Kendall let out a soft laugh. "Rosalind Linden, drop the act."
She pulled her phone from her pocket and tapped the screen to play a video.
It was security footage from the hallway at the International Medical Summit.
In the video, Rosalind Linden was supporting a disoriented Miles Warren, clearly trying to take him to a room. After she disappeared from view, Claire Kendall arrived and led Miles away.
"No! That video has to be fake."
"I know I slept with Miles Warren that night! We were together multiple times!"
Claire Kendall stared at her coldly. "Are you sure that was Miles Warren?"
Beside them, Richard Linden’s expression suddenly darkened.
Claire Kendall continued the video.
A moment later, a man dressed exactly like Miles Warren appeared on screen just as Rosalind Linden returned.
She rushed right up to him, throwing her arms around him and kissing him passionately. She was clearly the aggressor; there was no sign of her being forced at all.
"You should find this man very familiar."
Rosalind Linden’s face was ashen, and her entire body trembled.
"No, impossible... How could the man that night have been the body double!"
The coldness in Claire Kendall’s gaze intensified.
"So you admit it. At the summit, you deliberately found a look-alike to act as a stand-in for Miles Warren. If your drugs didn’t work on Dr. Warren, you would have brought out the double to frame him."
Her words were sharp and precise. Faced with the iron-clad proof of the video, Rosalind Linden had no way to argue.
She pounded her stomach. "It’s not a Warren child! It’s a bastard! A bastard!!"
"Dad, help me! Help me get rid of this baby..."
Rosalind Linden seemed to have lost her mind as she scrambled off the bed.
"Miles, forgive me this one time! I really do love you! I’ll get rid of the baby, I don’t want it! Just... take me, one more time, please?"
A wave of shocked sighs swept through the onlookers.
Richard Linden’s face was ashen. "You... you disgraceful girl! You’ve really lost your mind!"
’He had thought he could finally hitch his wagon to the great Warren Family, but it turned out the child wasn’t even theirs.’
’And he’d brought all these respected figures from their field to witness this. Now, his reputation would be the laughingstock of all of Aethel!’
Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, Claire Kendall boldly linked her arm with Miles Warren’s, raising a delicate eyebrow.
With that one gesture, everyone instantly understood.
So Claire Kendall and Dr. Warren were the real couple!
Claire Kendall’s voice was deliberately saccharine. "Dr. Warren, now that the misunderstanding has been cleared up, shall we go?"
Miles Warren hesitated for a fraction of a second but didn’t pull his arm away, allowing Claire Kendall to hold it intimately.
The two of them left the room.
Back in his office, as soon as the door closed, Miles Warren finally pulled his arm free.
"Is the show over?"
