Chapter 74: Chapter 74: No Condom

She had always been the one to take the lead, but now that she could feel the distinct change in Miles Warren’s body, she was the one starting to panic a little.

Amid her caresses, two of his shirt buttons came undone.

The flashlight had long since slipped from his hand and landed on the bed. Its beam slanted across the ceiling, scattering down over the two of them.

"Mi-Miles Warren..."

Claire Kendall whispered his name, her voice soft and coy.

"Mm."

He grunted in response, his lips leaving hers to travel down her chin, to her neck, and farther still.

Claire Kendall lay there passively, her mind a complete blank. She felt his hand linger on her waist before slowly moving upward—

She let out a soft moan.

Just when she thought things were about to spiral out of control...

The man on top of her suddenly froze.

He braced his arms on either side of her, his eyes dark and deep, swirling with emotion.

Claire Kendall blinked, stunned.

"Mi-Miles Warren?" she whispered, her voice still thick with desire.

"You’re... done already?"

"Claire Kendall, you..."

He squeezed his eyes shut. His breathing was heavy, and he was in no state to argue with her right now.

After a long moment of ragged breaths, he slowly regained his composure.

"No." His voice was hoarse and cold. He rolled off and sat up on the edge of the bed, but his gaze, fixed on her, remained dark and intense.

"What?" Claire Kendall didn’t understand.

Miles Warren pressed his lips together, then uttered two words.

"No condoms."

...

Claire Kendall blurted out, "I’ll go buy some."

She felt bold, her heart pounding with anticipation.

Miles Warren’s Adam’s apple bobbed. A bead of sweat trickled down from his forehead and landed on her chest.

"There are none nearby."

’Claire Kendall was a little disappointed. She rather enjoyed watching this ice king lose control before her, unable to restrain himself as he fell from his pedestal.’

"Miles Warren." She poked his abs with her finger.

"Are you suffering right now?"

He didn’t say a word, but his heavier breathing was answer enough.

She reached out, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"Want me to help you out?"

Miles Warren grabbed her wandering hand and pushed it under the covers. "Claire Kendall, behave."

’His body was scorching hot, but his words were ice-cold.’

In the darkness, she heard him get out of bed, followed by the sound of the shower running in the bathroom.

’The power was out. He was taking a cold shower.’

The next morning, Claire Kendall woke up in Miles Warren’s arms.

His embrace was warm, and she nuzzled against him contentedly, like a satisfied cat.

"You’re awake?" Miles Warren opened his eyes and glanced out the window. "The rain stopped. The road should be clear."

He looked down at the soft, delicate woman in his arms, momentarily unwilling to let her go.

Claire Kendall looked back at him, blinking as a serious calculation formed in her mind.

"Dr. Warren, do you know what the first thing I’m going to do when we get back is?"

"Hm?"

"Buy a few boxes of..." She nibbled his ear, deliberately dragging out the last word. "Condoms."

Miles Warren’s serious expression softened, his eyes filling with exasperation.

After packing up, they said goodbye to the innkeeper.

The car Claire Kendall had driven there was a total loss, so they left it for the towing company.

She snuggled into the passenger seat of Miles Warren’s car while he drove.

He pulled over at a rest stop. A short while later, Miles Warren returned carrying several bags, all stuffed full.

Without exception, they were all filled with her favorite snacks.

Claire Kendall’s eyes lit up, her voice laced with a hint of smugness.

"Dr. Warren, you’ve got my preferences down so perfectly. I’m starting to suspect you have a secret crush on me."

The man’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. "You talk too much."

As the car drove on smoothly, Claire Kendall opened a bag, and the aroma of a grilled sausage instantly filled the car.

She dug in with gusto.

She deliberately teased Miles Warren, waving the sausage near his lips.

"Sausages bought by Dr. Warren just hit different. It’s extra fragrant. Want a taste...?"

’She knew Miles Warren wouldn’t eat it. He disliked junk food and never ate in his car.’

But the next second, defying all logic, Miles Warren took a bite of the remaining half of her sausage.

"But... I already ate from that."

Miles Warren shot her a look, completely unfazed.

"We’ve already kissed."

The car drove on. With a bag of chips in her hands, Claire Kendall’s head tilted to one side, and she drifted into a deep sleep.

At the next rest stop, Miles Warren parked the car. He placed a neck pillow behind her head, adjusted her into a more comfortable position, and draped a light blanket over her.

A slight smile touched Miles Warren’s lips. He took out his phone and snapped a picture of the scenery outside the passenger-side window.

He posted it to his social feed with the caption, "Sunny day," and then refocused on driving.

In less than five minutes, Miles Warren’s social feed blew up.

Julian Wilde: [? A social feed post? Once in a blue moon. I thought your WhatsApp account was just for decoration.]

Intern A: [Dr. Warren took three days off. So he went on a road trip.]

Head Nurse: [Looks like Dr. Warren’s got something going on!]

Jonathan Keller: [!! Why is there food in your car? Last time, I was about to pass out from hunger in your car, and after I ate one cookie, you gave me the death glare for three days! Is this fair?! Is this right?!]

...

「Sinclair Design」

When Yvonne Warren saw the social feed post from her uncle, Miles Warren, she froze for a moment.

Sensing something was off, she immediately zoomed in on the picture.

In the bottom right corner was a hand. A woman’s hand.

Yvonne Warren examined it inch by inch, her inspection meticulous.

’This hand... It felt intensely familiar. Where have I seen it before?’

Just as she was wracking her brain, Jacob Sinclair walked past, interrupting her thoughts.

His suit jacket was draped casually over his arm. He wore no tie, and the top two buttons of his shirt were undone, giving him an air of nonchalant languor.

"Jacob, where are you going? The quarterly report meeting is in a little while. You have to be there."

"We still need to finalize the details of the OCHH acquisition."

Yvonne Warren rushed forward and grabbed his arm.

A flash of impatience crossed Jacob Sinclair’s eyes. He subtly pushed her away, his tone frigid.

"Sinclair Design is your responsibility now. You just move the project forward."

Yvonne Warren bit her lip, looking troubled. "But it’s such a huge investment. I can’t be the one to make the final call..."

Jacob Sinclair shot her a glance, growing more irritated by the second.

His thoughts turned to Claire Kendall.

’When Sinclair Design was first founded, no matter how large the investment or how difficult the project, Claire Kendall could handle it all on her own. She never bothered him.’

’And when Claire was around, the department’s sales figures were far higher than they were now.’

Jacob Sinclair’s tone grew even colder.

"If you can’t push this through, then cancel the acquisition. We’ll just stick to business as usual."

He turned and walked away, his face a cold mask.

Jacob Sinclair got his car and sat in the driver’s seat.

He lit a cigarette, feeling increasingly agitated. ’I had my assistant investigate who performed the surgery on Claire Kendall’s mother, but there’s still no word.’

’Could Ethan Lynch really have pulled that off so discreetly all on his own?’

’And she... she’d rather be with a good-for-nothing like that than come back to me.’

The thought made his chest tighten with a sour, suffocating feeling. He stubbed out his cigarette, slammed on the gas, and sped off.

「The Keystone Building, First Floor. Outside Moonstone.」

Claire Kendall unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car, her tone cheerful. "Thanks, Dr. Warren."

The man grunted a soft "mm-hmm."

She walked around the front of the car from the passenger side to the driver’s window.

She raised a hand and knocked on the glass.

Miles Warren got the hint and rolled down the window, revealing his face.

"What’s wrong? Did you forget something...?"

Before he could finish, Claire Kendall rose onto her tiptoes, gripped the edge of the open window, and leaned inside.

"SMOOCH!"

She planted a kiss on Miles Warren’s cheek.

It was light, but sweet.

"Dr. Warren, that’s my way of saying thanks."

His body stiffened for a second, then his lips curled into an involuntary smile.

"So—is Dr. Warren going to return the gift?"

Miles Warren’s Adam’s apple bobbed.

"I will."

He paused for a beat.

"But not here. When we get back to Regency Gardens tonight, I’ll give it to you then."
