Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Only Has Eyes for His Wife
Claire Kendall stood by the car, lightly biting her lip. "Then it’s settled."
"I’m not going to the class reunion at The Sovereign Hotel tonight after all."
She leaned in and lowered her voice. "I need to go home and get ready to receive Dr. Warren’s ’thank you’ gift."
Miles Warren’s lips curled in a fond, helpless smile.
"If you already promised them, you should go. As it happens, I have a meeting at The Sovereign tonight as well. I can pick you up after my shift at the hospital, and we can go together since it’s on the way."
Claire Kendall’s eyes sparkled as she readily agreed, "Okay, I’ll wait for you."
After they parted ways, Claire Kendall returned to her shop to process orders and was busy until evening.
She stretched, and the shop door was pushed open.
Yvonne Warren stood in the doorway, dressed in custom Louis Vuitton with flawless makeup, her sharp eyes scanning the room before finally settling on Claire Kendall.
She stepped forward, her voice urgent. "Claire, has Jacob come looking for you? I haven’t been able to reach him all day. He’s not answering my calls or replying to my WhatsApp messages."
She bit her lip, feigning distress. "A contract for the design department is waiting for his signature. I wouldn’t have come here to trouble you otherwise."
Yvonne Warren’s tone was meek, but her sharp gaze never stopped scanning the shop, searching for any sign that Jacob Sinclair had been there.
Claire Kendall raised an eyebrow, finding the situation somewhat laughable.
"I think you’re in the wrong place, Ms. Warren. Why would your fiancé be here?"
Yvonne Warren put on a pitiful act. "Claire, I know you and Jacob have a past. I really shouldn’t be one to complain, logically speaking."
"But we’re engaged. We’re going to get married any day now. And..."
She pursed her lips. "...we’ve slept together. So, could you please just stop seeing him?"
Her eyes reddened. "He loves me now. Please, stop harassing him and just let him go, alright?"
Claire Kendall leaned against the corner of the table, quietly watching her performance. When she finished, Claire let out a light laugh.
Her voice wasn’t loud, but every word was clear.
"Ms. Warren, Jacob Sinclair isn’t here. Who are you putting on this show for?"
"You knew I existed before you even got together with him, didn’t you? You made things difficult for me at every turn, hoping I’d back off on my own, all while you played the part of the gracious, understanding fiancée in front of him."
"Yvonne Warren, you’re certainly considerate of your man. But the Qing Dynasty ended a long time ago. If you’re so scared of losing him, put him on a leash. Stop coming here and bothering other people."
"You..." Yvonne Warren’s face flushed red with anger.
"Claire Kendall, you’ve got some nerve, acting so righteous. If it weren’t for Jacob, would you have what you have today?"
Claire Kendall let out a cold laugh. "Then I suggest you go and take a good look at the history of Sinclair Design’s success. Which of their nine-figure contracts wasn’t my handiwork?"
She glanced at the time. Miles Warren would be arriving soon. She started packing her bag, nonchalantly.
"Wendy, show our guest out."
"Claire Kendall!" Yvonne Warren’s expression was thunderous. She gritted her teeth. "This isn’t over!"
She spun around and left, slamming the door with a deafening bang.
Claire Kendall paid her no mind. After giving Wendy White a few instructions, she left too. Miles Warren’s car was already parked at the shop’s entrance. She got into the passenger seat. "Dr. Warren, you’re very punctual."
As Miles Warren pulled away, he asked, "Did Yvonne come looking for you?"
Claire was taken aback for a second, then nodded.
"I saw her storming out just now," Miles Warren’s voice deepened a little. "Did she give you a hard time?"
"No, she just mentioned something about a collaboration, but I wasn’t very interested." Claire Kendall averted her gaze, looking out the window.
"Mm, that’s good. She’s been spoiled since she was a child and can be mean to people. If she gives you any trouble, you tell me."
Claire Kendall’s heart warmed.
Miles Warren mentioned casually, "She’s marrying your former boss, Jacob Sinclair, next month."
Claire Kendall’s fingertips trembled slightly, and she subconsciously tightened her grip on the seatbelt.
This was the first time he had brought up Jacob Sinclair himself. His tone was unreadable, making Claire feel a bit unsettled.
"That’s pretty fast."
"My older brother is rushing them. He probably wants them to have kids soon. But Jacob Sinclair is not a good match for her. He’s too ambitious."
Claire Kendall didn’t know how to respond.
’Talking about her ex-boyfriend in front of the guy she was seeing? A little taboo.’
The car pulled up to The Sovereign Hotel just then, and Claire Kendall seized the chance to change the subject. "This is my first time here. It’s so opulent. It must be very expensive."
"Then I’ll pay. You go and join your classmates."
"Someone’s already covering it," Claire Kendall said, glancing at a message in her group chat. "A private room on the top floor."
"It’s on the way." Miles Warren unbuckled her seatbelt for her.
The long corridor was laid with a thick cashmere carpet, the light from the crystal chandeliers was enchanting, and the very air smelled of money.
Miles Warren pointed ahead. "Yours is that room up there. My meeting is right next door."
Just as Claire Kendall was about to keep walking, the door to Miles Warren’s private room was pushed open from the inside.
Several well-dressed, distinguished-looking middle-aged men walked out.
Seeing Miles Warren, they immediately hurried over, bowing obsequiously. "Mr. Warren, you’re here."
"We were ecstatic when you agreed to come."
Miles Warren’s voice was nonchalant, his gaze fixed on Claire Kendall. "It was on my way, so I came over."
The men looked at Claire Kendall, paused for a moment, then broke into even more enthusiastic smiles. "And this is?"
"I was just dropping her off for her class reunion."
"Ah—a pleasure, a pleasure—" The men immediately exchanged glances and greeted Claire Kendall.
Claire Kendall was both awkward and flattered.
’They didn’t know her, but she recognized every single one of them!’
’They were all regulars on the finance channels—major figures in Aethel.’
’Claire Kendall knew the Warren Family was powerful, but she never imagined that Miles, who wasn’t even in the business world, could command so much respect.’
"Hello, hello..." Claire Kendall nodded profusely.
Miles Warren spoke up, "She’s also in business. The fashion brand Moonstone. It’s just starting out."
"I see, I see. I’ve heard of it."
"Your reputation precedes you."
Claire Kendall found their expressions very telling.
’One was in oil, another in aerospace, a third in new energy... none of them would have any reason to know a fashion designer. These guys were such incredible actors, true veterans of the craft.’
’Miles had brought up Moonstone for a reason. His intentions were clear—he was paving the way for her.’
She smiled and graciously accepted their pleasantries.
"Well, Ms. Kendall, if you have time later, why don’t you come and join us?"
This was exactly what Miles Warren had been hoping for.
He immediately turned his head to look at Claire Kendall, his eyes questioning, filled with intense anticipation.
But facing a group of tycoons, and at Miles Warren’s own event, Claire Kendall knew her place.
She kept her reply diplomatic.
"Thank you for the invitation. I’ll come by after my reunion. I won’t disturb you any longer."
She turned to leave, but Miles Warren grabbed her wrist.
His voice was soft, but laced with a thick possessiveness as he unconsciously stroked her fingers.
"When it’s over, or if you get bored, message me immediately. I’ll come get you."
"My meeting here..."
Miles Warren trailed off, but he might as well have had the words "isn’t that important" written on his face.
The tycoons behind him had to maintain their forced smiles.
"Okay, I’ll head over then." Claire Kendall went to the private room up ahead.
"Mr. Warren, the young lady has gone in. Shall we go in and talk as well?"
Miles Warren hummed in response.
Claire Kendall pushed open the door to the private room. A wave of boisterous noise washed over her, a stark contrast to the quiet outside. The table was already laden with exquisite dishes.
Someone shouted.
"Claire Kendall’s here!"
