Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Annoyed by His Touching
[They all want to meet you.]
A faint smile touched Claire Kendall’s lips as she turned off her phone and looked up to meet Joanne Sutton’s sharp gaze.
"I can go get their WhatsApp contacts."
Her voice wasn’t loud, but the entire private room fell silent.
"But I have one condition."
Joanne Sutton sneered, "A condition?"
Claire Kendall said unhurriedly, "If I get the WhatsApp contacts of those big shots next door, you have to apologize to Dawn."
"No one’s stopping you from flaunting your wealth, but it’s disgusting to do it by putting others down."
Dawn’s eyes reddened. For years, her husband had worked under Joanne’s family and had suffered no small amount of humiliation.
She tugged on Claire Kendall’s sleeve and shook her head. "Claire, let’s just drop it. Those people next door... I’m fine..."
Claire Kendall gently patted her hand and comforted her in a low voice, "It’s okay. After today, I’ll help you both find new jobs."
Joanne Sutton’s expression soured. She sneered, "Fine. If you can actually get their contacts, I’ll apologize immediately. But if you can’t—"
Malice filled her face. "Then right here, in front of everyone, you’ll admit you got that bottle of red wine by sleeping with someone. You’ll admit that you, Claire Kendall, are just a slut who sleeps her way to the top!"
"Claire, don’t agree!" Dawn’s voice was fraught with anxiety. "We can’t afford to offend those powerful people."
"Alright," Claire Kendall agreed crisply.
Amidst the gloating gazes of the others, Claire Kendall walked out of the room, pushed open the door to the one next door, and a buzz of discussion erupted behind her.
"I just saw the head of Eastline Energy. This gathering today is definitely a big deal."
"Claire Kendall is ridiculous. Does she think she can seduce them with just a pretty face? Those men have seen every kind of woman there is."
Joanne Sutton’s eyes were triumphant as she spoke sarcastically.
"Oh, don’t say that. What if our dear Claire Kendall actually has some skills!"
The private room next door was a completely different world.
The air was filled with the rich aroma of tea. The bigwigs sat around a table, with Miles Warren at its center.
Every head turned toward her in unison.
Claire Kendall offered a polite and proper smile. "Pardon the intrusion."
"Ms. Kendall, no intrusion at all! We were just wondering if you were going to come over."
"We middle-aged folk love talking with young people."
When Miles Warren saw her, his perpetually cold and indifferent expression finally shifted.
He beckoned to her. "Come here."
Ever since everyone had entered the room, they had all been tactful enough to leave the prime seat next to him empty.
Claire Kendall walked over. Miles Warren very naturally pulled out the chair, took her hand, and had her sit down.
The men at the table were all masters of social grace. They skillfully steered the conversation toward Claire Kendall to ensure she wouldn’t feel awkward or left out.
Claire Kendall answered each person fluently, her demeanor poised and calm.
Miles Warren picked up his chopsticks and served her some food. "Hot spring beef. Try it, it’s your favorite."
"And sweet and sour pork ribs, and crispy fried pork. They’re better here than what you get outside."
The magnates exchanged another look.
During the ordering, the Warren family’s cold-faced King of Hell had ordered nothing but dishes a woman would like. He truly doted on her.
Claire Kendall took a small bite, her eyes curving into crescents. "It really is delicious."
"Eat more. I’ll get the chef’s contact info for you before we leave."
As Miles Warren spoke, he rolled up his cuffs and casually flicked his wrist.
A string of dark brown beads on his wrist was revealed, gleaming with a gentle luster.
But the material and craftsmanship were quite ordinary, completely unbefitting of Miles Warren’s status.
Mr. Wright, sitting opposite, had a sharp eye and immediately offered a subtle compliment.
"Mr. Warren, that’s a fine bracelet! The color, the craftsmanship... it suits you perfectly."
"Is that so?" Miles Warren gave a rare, soft chuckle. He gently caressed the beads with his fingertips and looked at Claire Kendall. "She made a special trip to Viridell Temple to get them for me."
"Oh, my! So they’re blessed prayer beads from Viridell Temple! The kind obtained through prostrating every hundred steps. Those are priceless!"
"Ms. Kendall is so sincere. Mr. Warren, you’re a lucky man!"
"A match made in heaven. One can only be envious..."
Claire Kendall’s ears burned as she listened to the compliments.
She shot a glance at Miles Warren. ’Since when did he develop this habit of showing off all the time?’
Mr. Wright smoothly and seamlessly transitioned from idle chatter to business.
"Speaking of Viridell County, the mountain cable car there was the first project I ever contracted..."
The others immediately jumped in, discussing funding needs and future plans.
Claire Kendall found it fascinating to listen to these top-tier business magnates chat.
Some of their ideas could be applied to Moonstone’s operations, and she listened with great interest.
Miles Warren, however, paid them no mind. Without even lifting his head, he held Claire Kendall’s hand, toying with it in his large palm.
He fiddled with her fingers one by one and gently rotated her wrist, as if he were rolling a pair of prized walnuts in his palm, his gaze focused and full of delight.
Claire Kendall was engrossed in the conversation when she became annoyed by his fiddling and let out a soft "tsk" of displeasure.
Everyone immediately looked at her.
Claire Kendall gave an embarrassed smile and tried to pull her hand away under the table, but he just grabbed it again, holding it even tighter.
Helpless, she shot a glare at Miles Warren and pretended nothing had happened.
Mr. Wright continued talking about the project plan for redeveloping the old city district.
After several of the magnates had shared their views, she said softly, "Actually, I think that instead of demolishing the antique buildings in the old district, it would be more distinctive to turn it into a special project for intangible cultural heritage. That would also help avoid the homogenized competition we see with shopping malls."
Her few sentences left the magnates at the table looking surprised.
They had originally thought this young woman was just a decorative clinging vine to amuse Miles Warren, but they hadn’t expected her to have such sharp insights into a business project.
A sense of respect dawned on them. It seemed she wasn’t just Mr. Warren’s treasured darling, but also a capable woman in her own right.
Mr. Wright raised his glass. "A toast to Ms. Kendall. Your insight has been a true eye-opener for me!"
Miles Warren watched everyone give Claire Kendall their sincere praise, and the corners of his lips curled up slightly.
’My girl is amazing.’
After a few rounds of drinks, Claire Kendall sent Miles Warren a message under the table.
[I just made a bet with someone. I have to get the WhatsApp contacts of the people in your room.]
Miles Warren, who had been listening absently to the others’ business blueprints, lowered his gaze and typed seriously on his screen.
[So you didn’t come over because you missed me.]
Claire Kendall: ???
She looked at Miles Warren. The man still had the air of someone casually listening to a report, nodding from time to time.
Claire Kendall suddenly felt that she really knew very little about Miles Warren.
She sent another message.
[I just need one person’s contact, besides yours. Please, Dr. Warren? I don’t want to lose.]
At the table, Miles Warren suddenly raised his hand and pointed to his phone for everyone to see.
DING!
The notification tone on Claire Kendall’s phone sounded.
She lowered her eyes.
A new group chat had suddenly appeared in her WhatsApp list.
"Claire wants to add you all on WhatsApp. Go ahead and accept."
The men all tapped on Claire Kendall’s profile picture in the group, scrambling to add her.
Claire Kendall’s phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.
She was so embarrassed her toes curled. ’He only needed to privately share one contact!!’
"Thank you, everyone..." Claire Kendall forced a smile.
Miles Warren said in a level tone, "The projects you’ve all brought today are very good and have great potential. I will convey them to the old man. You can all start preparing the investment contracts."
The magnates looked at each other, then, without exception, turned to look at Claire Kendall with gratitude.
Under the table, Claire Kendall secretly sent a message to Miles Warren.
[Dr. Warren, isn’t this what they call being blinded by beauty?]
