Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Is It Just For Show?
Miles Warren replied with two words: "I will."
Claire Kendall got up, said her goodbyes, and returned to the private room where the class reunion was being held.
Everyone, eager to see how the drama would unfold, had grown tired of waiting.
When she returned, a wave of murmurs swept through the private room.
"Claire, are you okay?" Dawn rushed over. "Those people didn’t give you a hard time, did they?"
"No, they were all quite friendly."
Claire Kendall walked up to Joanne Sutton, took out her phone, and pulled up the friend request screen.
Mr. Wright—Farrow Real Estate
Mr. Bishop—Wallace Airlines
Mr. Parker—Horizon Steel
...
There were seven names in total, all of them major figures in Aethel high society. And astonishingly, they had all proactively sent friend requests to Claire Kendall on WhatsApp.
"Joanne Sutton, now you can apologize to Dawn."
"Impossible! It’s fake! This has to be fake!" Joanne Sutton’s face went pale as she stared intently at the screen.
"Of course it’s fake. Little girl, where did you hire these actors? How could these people possibly add you on WhatsApp?"
A deep, middle-aged man’s voice sounded from the doorway.
Joanne Sutton, as if she had seen her savior, rushed over with a coquettish cry. "Darling, you’re finally here."
"She created a bunch of fake WhatsApp profiles and is trying to force me to apologize."
The man glanced at Claire Kendall, his smile dripping with mockery.
"I’ve been grinding away in Aethel’s business world for years with my company, and I’ve never even gotten to exchange a single word with these people. You think you know them?"
The others quickly chimed in.
"Yeah, she just sells clothes. Those men handle deals worth billions. Why would they add her on WhatsApp?"
"Look, the request source says it’s from a group chat. It’s definitely fake!"
"She’s probably just jealous that Joanne married well and is deliberately putting on this show."
Joanne Sutton’s "husband" pulled a business card from his bag. "How about this? I can see things aren’t easy for you. My factory needs to order a batch of work uniforms soon. I’ll give the contract to you."
"It’s just for a few tens of thousands, nothing huge, but it’ll be enough to keep you fed for a while."
Claire Kendall sneered. ’A few tens of thousands? That’s not even enough for the raw materials for one of my Flowing Light Brocade pieces.’
The room was filled with fawning compliments for Joanne Sutton’s "husband."
"Joanne, your husband is so kind."
"Repaying malice with kindness. Truly the mark of a great man."
"Oh, Dawn, you picked the wrong side. Now you’re going to get your husband fired over this."
Hearing this, Claire Kendall became genuinely angry.
She immediately dialed Miles Warren’s number.
She spoke with a haughty, demanding tone. "Get over here!"
A deep, indulgent male voice came from the receiver. "Okay."
The moment he spoke, the door to the private room was pushed open.
Miles Warren stood in the doorway, followed by the seven business titans one would normally only see on financial news channels.
Miles Warren stepped forward. "What’s wrong? Why are you so upset?"
Claire Kendall pointed at Joanne Sutton and her companion, annoyed. "They said the WhatsApp contacts of the tycoons I added are all fake!"
"Hmm?" Miles Warren looked at the men behind him. "Do you all have other WhatsApp accounts?"
The tycoons’ faces paled.
’That’s not something you can joke about!’
Mr. Wright’s voice was stern. "Who is questioning Ms. Kendall?"
Joanne Sutton’s companion turned deathly pale, looking as if he was about to burst into tears.
’These really are the tycoons I’ve only ever seen from afar.’
’And the young man with his arm around Claire Kendall looked even more noble and extraordinary.’
’And these tycoons actually have to curry favor with him? But he, in turn, is looking to this slip of a girl for what to do!’
"Mr... Mr. Wright, it’s all a misunderstanding! I was blind and didn’t realize who I was speaking to! I shouldn’t have run my mouth!"
Inside the private room, the people who had been waiting to watch a show at Claire Kendall’s expense were now trembling, not daring to utter a peep.
’They were the ones who had provoked a powerful figure.’
Miles Warren held Claire Kendall’s hand. "What do you want to do?"
Showing no mercy, Claire Kendall mimicked the domineering CEOs from TV dramas. "Make him go bankrupt!"
Miles Warren smiled indulgently. He didn’t even have to say a word before Mr. Wright immediately gave the order.
"Instruct our subsidiaries to terminate all future cooperation related to him!"
Mr. Wright looked at the man with unconcealed mockery and pity.
’Of all the people to offend, he just had to cross the one person Miles Warren holds dearest. He’s really got a death wish.’
"Mr. Wright..."
’It’s over. It’s all over.’
The middle-aged man’s face was ashen. In a fit of rage, he slapped Joanne Sutton across the face.
"How did I end up with such a stupid mistress!"
"I spent all that money on you just so you could get me bankrupted?"
The entire room was stunned.
’Mistress? So Joanne Sutton was just someone’s other woman?’
’And here she was, calling him ’darling’ and organizing this reunion just to show off. How pathetic!’
Blood trickled from the corner of Joanne Sutton’s mouth, her eyes filled with bitter resentment. Her dream of being a wealthy man’s wife was shattered.
’It’s all Claire Kendall’s fault! All because of that bitch!’
She rushed in front of Miles Warren and shrieked hysterically.
"Sir, don’t be fooled by Claire Kendall’s pretty face! She’s just using you!"
"Back in high school, I heard she had a boyfriend she was head-over-heels in love with—the can’t-live-without-him type! That person couldn’t have been you!"
"Sir, don’t be deceived by a fickle woman who doesn’t even love you!"
Claire Kendall’s brows furrowed, and her expression darkened.
’Thankfully, Joanne didn’t go to the same university as me, so what she knows about my ex-boyfriend is just hearsay.’
’If she were to bring up Jacob Sinclair right now, I really wouldn’t know how to clean up this mess.’
She didn’t notice that the fingers of Miles Warren’s hand, hanging by his side, clenched tightly.
But his expression remained impassive, though he exuded a bone-chilling coldness.
"It is not your place to speak about her."
Miles Warren took Claire Kendall’s hand, his gaze sweeping across the room.
"Sorry for the spectacle, everyone. Tonight is on me. It’s late, so feel free to get a room here at the hotel. I’ll cover the expenses."
Everyone was astonished. A single night at The Sovereign Hotel cost tens of thousands, at least.
’Claire Kendall really married into a truly powerful and wealthy family!’
"Well, enjoy the rest of your night. I’ll be going now." Claire Kendall then whispered to Dawn, "Don’t worry. I’ll take care of the job situation for you."
Everyone looked at Dawn with envy.
’Picked the wrong side? She clearly hit the jackpot!’

「Regency Gardens.」
In the fifth-floor hallway.
Miles Warren let go of her hand, his voice gentle. "Good night. Get some rest."
With that, he pushed open the door to Room 501.
Claire Kendall stepped forward, blocking his path. She rose onto her tiptoes and hooked his chin with her finger.
"Dr. Warren, where’s my gift in return?"
The man’s voice was a shade lower, tinged with intense restraint. "It’s very late."
"Ohh—" Claire Kendall narrowed her eyes. "So, Dr. Warren plans on going back on his word."
"Miles Warren," she said, her gaze lowering to glance at a certain part of his anatomy, "are you all show and no go?"
