Tempting Him to Lose Control

Chapter 79: Do You Have That Thing at Your Place?

Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Do You Have That Thing at Your Place?

The words were both blunt and provocative.

The look in Miles Warren’s eyes deepened.

Claire Kendall didn’t pull back. Instead, she pressed her advantage.

She released his chin, her fingertips tracing the bob of his Adam’s apple, then slid slowly, deliberately, all the way down.

Her fingers glided over the restrained rise and fall of his chest, across his firm, sculpted abs, finally coming to a precise stop on his belt buckle.

Her slender finger gave it a light press.

CLICK.

The faint metallic sound was exceptionally clear in the silent night.

She tilted her face up. Her eyes shimmered, but her gaze held a blatant, testing light.

"Dr. Warren, why can’t you ever keep your word?"

Miles Warren’s body temperature continued to climb. He seized her troublemaking fingers, his every word teetering on the brink of losing control.

"Claire Kendall, stop it."

"Alright, alright. I’ll stop. I can’t afford to provoke the Great Ascetic Warren, so pure of heart and free from desire."

Claire Kendall wrenched her hand free, turned, and went back to 502.

Miles Warren watched her retreat, his heart still pounding like a drum.

’It wasn’t that he didn’t want her; he wanted her down to his very marrow.’

’But they had just gotten back from Viridell County, and he didn’t want to wear her out.’

Claire Kendall took a hot shower, then pulled open her closet. She picked out a wine-red slip dress and changed into it. It had a plunging V-neck, a completely open back, and a hem that only reached mid-thigh.

The woman in the mirror was radiant and alluring. She arched an eyebrow.

’She had no intention of letting things end there for the night. She had returned to 502 specifically to change into this outfit.’

’The more he held back, the more she wanted to break through his composure and see him completely lose control.’

Claire Kendall keyed in the passcode and opened the door to 501.

The living room was pitch-black, but a light shone from the study.

She tiptoed over and pushed the door open.

Miles Warren was sitting behind his desk, focused on the computer screen, the very picture of a refined intellectual.

Claire Kendall’s voice was sweet and soft, her words intentionally drawn out.

"Dr. Warren, stop looking at your computer. Look at me. Do you like what you see?"

At the sound of her voice, Miles Warren looked up. His gaze froze.

Claire Kendall frowned, displeased. ’What kind of reaction is that?’

The next second, several surprised voices erupted from the computer speakers.

"That voice... is that Ms. Kendall?"

"That’s her. The daughter of the patient in bed 36."

"Oh my god, they’re together this late at night?"

"Ahhh! I ship it so hard! Congratulations, you two!"

...

A babble of voices arose, mixed with laughter and teasing hoots.

Claire Kendall froze on the spot.

’Was Miles Warren holding an online conference with his interns?’

’So what had she just done?! In front of a bunch of students, she had asked their professor if he liked what he saw?’

Claire Kendall wished a hole would open up and swallow her.

Miles Warren gave a quiet order. "You all can work on organizing your papers."

He muted his microphone and walked over to her. His gaze swept over her eye-catching dress and bare skin, and his Adam’s apple bobbed uncontrollably.

He raised a hand and tilted her chin up. "Shy now? Where did all that courage from a moment ago go?"

Claire Kendall’s cheeks burned. "This is all your fault."

"Okay, my fault." The look in Miles Warren’s eyes deepened. "Wait for me. I just have a few more papers to finish reviewing."

She nodded obediently and curled up in the armchair by the bookshelf.

Miles Warren sat back down, put on his headphones, and resumed his discussion with the students.

Bored, Claire Kendall scanned her surroundings. The bookshelves were filled with either medical texts or conference reports, none of which she could make heads or tails of.

Her gaze drifted aimlessly until it landed on a metal box on the bottom shelf.

Driven by curiosity, she crouched down and gently lifted a corner of the lid.

Claire Kendall froze.

Inside was a stack of love letters in pastel-colored envelopes.

She glanced over at Miles Warren. He was still engrossed in answering his students’ questions.

She lowered her gaze. ’These are probably from the one he never got over. He’s kept them all these years. It looks like the rumors were true—he really hasn’t forgotten.’

A sudden irritation flared within her. She quickly shut the lid and put the box back in its place.

A few moments later, Miles Warren ended the video conference. He walked over to the armchair and leaned down to soothe her.

"Are you still upset about earlier? My camera wasn’t on, they couldn’t see you."

"It’s not that."

Claire Kendall was half-reclined in the armchair, the smooth, pale skin of her back exposed to the air. She lifted her gaze slightly, her eyelashes fluttering.

"Miles Warren, you..."

She opened her mouth, wanting to ask about the metal box on the shelf, wanting to ask if he was still unable to forget that person.

Claire Kendall stared into his devoted eyes, but the words died on her lips. After all, she wasn’t being completely open with him either. She didn’t know how to bring up the matter of Jacob Sinclair.

They were two of a kind, each hiding their own secrets. ’In that case,’ she decided, ’I’ll stop overthinking. For now, I just want to invite him to get lost with me.’

Claire Kendall sat up and lunged, catching Miles Warren completely off guard. He stumbled back, landing on the rug between the armchair and the coffee table.

Her long dress was rumpled, taking on a suggestive hue in the lamplight.

"Miles Warren, do you or do you not have any in the house?"

The man’s eyes were deep. "I do, but..."

Claire Kendall clung to him a little tighter. "But what?"

Miles Warren’s large hand gripped her waist as he rose to his feet.

She clung to him like a koala.

He pushed open the bedroom door.

Miles Warren placed her in the middle of the soft bed. The mattress dipped as he covered her body with his. He opened his mouth to speak, but Claire Kendall pressed her hand over it.

"Still talking? Or are you actually no good at this?"

The last shred of hesitation in the man’s eyes was burned to ash.

He reached out, pulled open the nightstand drawer, and took out a small, square box.

Claire Kendall glanced at the type. "You sly devil, you..."

She stopped mid-sentence.

A familiar, heavy ache radiated from her lower abdomen, followed by a slow, warm trickle.

Claire Kendall’s entire body tensed.

Miles Warren immediately sensed something was wrong. Propping himself up, he looked down at her. "What’s wrong?"

"I..." She bit her lip, her expression a mixture of emotions. Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I think... I just got my period..."
