Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Don’t Stop
The bedroom fell silent in an instant.
The only sound was their heavy breathing.
Miles Warren lowered his gaze to the half-opened square box and squeezed his eyes shut.
When he opened them again, he had forcibly suppressed the desire surging within them.
He ruffled her long hair, a helpless yet indulgent smile on his face.
"Claire Kendall, did you do this on purpose?"
"I didn’t," she said, mortified. She shifted, afraid of staining his sheets, and struggled to get up. "I need to use the restroom."
"Wait, don’t move." He stopped her and got out of bed himself.
Claire Kendall huddled under the covers, wanting to cry but unable to shed a tear.
’I’ve done nothing but embarrass myself all night!’
A moment later, Miles Warren returned with a package of sanitary pads in his hand.
Claire Kendall took them, her face burning. She mumbled a quiet "thank you" before rushing into the bathroom.
When she came out, all cleaned up, a glass of brown sugar water and a hot water bottle wrapped in a soft towel were waiting on the nightstand.
Miles Warren had changed his clothes. His hair was dripping wet and his body felt cool—he had clearly gone to the guest room for a cold shower to put out the fire.
He spoke up, "You can’t even remember your period. How irregular are you? You need to get that sorted out."
"From now on, cut back on cold and ’damp’ foods, don’t stay up late, and get regular moxibustion treatments..."
Claire Kendall scooted closer, sipping the brown sugar water and obediently replying, "I know."
She glanced at him, then propped her feet on his lap, her tone sly and brazen.
"Dr. Warren, you know, you didn’t have to take a cold shower."
"Hm?"
She blinked, her voice dropping to a low whisper.
"I could have helped you, you know. Just like last time, using my..."
Miles Warren froze. Then he stood up, took the empty glass from her hand, and said, "Shut up."
"Get some rest." Miles Warren turned to leave, but the tips of his ears were bright red.
Claire Kendall grabbed his sleeve, whining playfully, "Sleep with me. My stomach hurts. I want you to rub it!"
’Oops, I said the quiet part out loud.’
She paused, then corrected herself, "I mean, I want you to help rub it."
Claire Kendall was like a pestering kitten, huddled in bed but staring at him with brazen confidence.
Miles Warren stopped. After a few seconds of silence, he finally gave in. He walked around to the other side of the bed, lifted the covers, and slipped in.
"Why are you so far away?" Claire Kendall complained.
Miles Warren shifted a little closer to her.
As the distance between them closed, her cloyingly sweet scent instantly filled his nostrils. The heat he had just doused with a cold shower began to rise again, stirring a faint restlessness within him.
She took his hand, lifted the hem of her dress, guided it underneath, and pressed it against her lower abdomen. "There. You can start rubbing now!"
The man’s large palm was very warm. He rubbed in rhythmic circles, alternating pressure from light to heavy.
The heavy ache in her abdomen eased considerably. Claire Kendall hummed in comfort. "As expected, a doctor is much more effective than a hot water bottle."
Miles Warren didn’t speak, but his breathing grew heavier. The touch of her delicate skin fanned the flames of agitation in his heart.
He didn’t pull his hand away until he felt the person in his arms grow still, her breathing steady and even.
She whimpered, "Don’t stop... it feels good~"
Miles Warren’s lips tightened, and his body tensed. ’Does she even know what she’s saying? How did I never realize how much of a little pest she could be?’
He barely slept that night.
The next morning, Claire Kendall woke up, stretched languidly, and felt completely refreshed.
Miles Warren was standing in the doorway.
She got out of bed barefoot, still wearing last night’s slip dress. After a night of tossing and turning, one strap had fallen, loosely tracing the lines of her full figure.
"Morning, Dr. Warren."
Miles Warren’s eyes darkened for a moment before he looked away. "Go wash up. Time for breakfast."
At the breakfast table, the two ate in silence.
Claire Kendall’s phone vibrated. It was a message from Ian Rhodes.
[Senior, there’s an auction tonight with a lot of original embroidery pieces from the Republican Era. Are you interested in checking it out?]
Claire Kendall replied immediately without hesitation.
[Of course! See you tonight.]
Miles Warren suddenly spoke up. "By the way, there’s an event tonight. Want to go together?"
’Miles Warren has plans too? But I just promised Ian Rhodes I’d go to the auction. Republican Era embroidery... I really want to see it.’
Claire Kendall was conflicted.
Thinking of Miles Warren’s cold, even hostile, attitude toward Ian Rhodes, she quickly put her phone away and made an excuse.
"I can’t tonight. It’s busy at the shop, and I have to go back and work on some designs."
Miles Warren replied gently, "Maybe next time, then. If I come across anything you might like, I’ll pick it up for you."
"Okay, thanks in advance, Dr. Warren!"
「That evening」
Claire Kendall went to the auction as planned.
She wore a graceful, simple qipao, her long hair pinned up with an elegant and gentle air.
"Senior! Over here!" Ian Rhodes, dressed in a casual suit and beaming, waved excitedly at Claire Kendall.
She walked over. Ian Rhodes had just presented their invitations, and the two of them entered the venue together.
The auction was held in an old Western-style mansion in the west of the city, richly decorated in the Republican Era style.
Vintage crystal chandeliers, carved wooden staircases—every detail exuded an air of classic elegance.
"Senior, tonight’s lots are on preview over there. Should we go take a look first?"
Claire Kendall nodded, but she had only taken two steps when the phone in her purse suddenly rang.
The name "Miles Warren" flashed on the screen.
Claire Kendall’s heart clenched. After a moment’s hesitation, she answered the call.
The man’s deep voice came through the receiver.
"What are you doing?"
Claire Kendall stole a glance at Ian Rhodes, who was a short distance away, and subconsciously moved to a more secluded spot.
She forced herself to sound calm. "I’m working late at Moonstone. I have a few design drafts to revise. What about you? Are you done with your work?"
"Yes, I’m done."
Claire Kendall noticed his voice had deepened, sounding completely different from usual. Just as she was about to ask what was wrong, Miles Warren’s steady voice came through the phone again.
"Look up."
Claire Kendall instinctively looked up and saw a tall figure hidden in the shadows.
The smile on her face froze as if she’d been struck by lightning.
On the second-floor gallery, Miles Warren was leaning against the carved railing, looking down at her. His expression was placid, revealing nothing of his mood.
"So this is what you call ’working late at Moonstone,’ hm?"
"Working so late you need to parade around with another man?"
"Claire Kendall, you’ve gotten awfully bold."
He drew out the last word, his tone dripping with pressure.
It suddenly dawned on Claire Kendall—the event he had mentioned that morning was this very auction!
He added nonchalantly, "The organizer of this auction is Mr. Wright, the man you met at the dinner table the other day."
’No wonder he’s here.’
Claire Kendall’s mind was in turmoil. She took half a step back and bumped right into Ian Rhodes.
Ian Rhodes caught her just in time, his palm gently but firmly cupping her elbow. The two of them were standing very close.
His tone was warm and concerned. "Senior, are you all right?"
From the second floor, Miles Warren lightly tapped his fingers on the railing.
Ian Rhodes followed Claire Kendall’s gaze and saw Miles Warren on the second floor.
’So that’s the man my senior likes.’
The smile on Ian Rhodes’s face didn’t falter, but the warmth in his eyes gradually faded.
He didn’t let go of Claire Kendall’s arm, nor did he pull away. Standing composed beside her, he flashed a brilliant smile.
"Dr. Warren, you’re here too. What a coincidence."
Miles Warren didn’t reply. He stared intently at the two of them before turning and walking away without another word.
Sensing the strange tension in the air, Claire Kendall was at a complete loss.
She had only one thought: ’I’m screwed.’
Ian Rhodes impassively released her, only now taking two steps back to create some distance between them.
He feigned a troubled look and sighed. "Senior Claire, Dr. Warren seemed very unhappy. Did I offend him in some way?"
"Should I go up and explain things to him?"
"No, it has nothing to do with you..." Claire Kendall forced a smile, her heart filled with anxiety.
’How am I supposed to coax this grumpy old man? Someone help, I need answers online, stat! It’s an emergency!’
