Chapter 87: Chapter 87: His Wicked Hand

The next morning, right after breakfast, the doorbell rang on time.

A chauffeur stood respectfully at the door, flanked by two bodyguards.

Bobby clung to Claire Kendall, refusing to let go, his eyes red. "Fairy Princess, Bobby doesn’t want to go."

"Be a good boy. Go to kindergarten for now. I’ll come pick you up after I get back from my trip in a couple of days, okay?"

"Then you have to remember to call me."

"Okay."

"And video call."

"Okay."

Claire Kendall held out her pinky, solemnly making a pinky promise with the little guy. Only then did Bobby agree to get in the car.

As the door closed, someone wrapped their arms around her waist from behind.

Miles Warren’s voice was muffled. "You have to call me, too. And video call. And remember to miss me."

"I know, Dr. Warren." Claire Kendall turned her head and planted a kiss on his cheek. "I’m heading out now."

She grabbed her suitcase from the side and closed the door.

Miles Warren stood in the entryway, his gaze darkening as he watched her leave.

Silvanus Mountain Resort was located by the sea in Aethel, and the scenery was exquisite.

Ian Rhodes was standing at the resort entrance, greeting the guests arriving for Grace Rhodes’s birthday party.

When he saw Claire Kendall, he smiled and walked over, taking the suitcase from her hand. "Claire, you’re here. It must have been a long trip."

"Not at all. The driver you arranged was with me the whole way. It was very thoughtful."

Ian Rhodes handed her a key card. "It’s just a bit remote out here. My mom prefers the quiet."

"The party is scheduled for this evening. I’ve booked a private theater, so we can all watch a movie in a bit. Then we can take a stroll on the beach at sunset."

Claire Kendall nodded.

Her room had an ocean view. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows were a golden beach and an azure sea, a sight that lifted anyone’s spirits.

She took a picture and sent it to Miles Warren.

[Arrived. The view is beautiful.]

After waiting a while, there was no reply.

’He’s probably busy.’ Claire Kendall didn’t overthink it. She unpacked her suitcase and started to change.

Since they would be going to the beach later, she changed directly into her swimsuit and threw on an off-white knit cardigan to cover up.

The private theater was much larger than she’d imagined, and it was crowded. There were even a few familiar faces from the design world, whom Claire Kendall greeted politely.

She settled into a leather seat, and Ian Rhodes naturally sat down beside her.

The lights dimmed, and a recently released thriller began to play on the screen. The audience was completely engrossed.

"Claire, would you like a Coke?" Ian Rhodes offered her a bottle. Claire Kendall accepted it politely and said in a low voice, "Thanks."

She took a small sip.

Suddenly, she felt a warmth on her leg.

A large hand rested on her thigh, over the thin fabric of her cardigan.

The fingers were long and slender with distinct knuckles. They tightened slightly, and her leg was held firmly in the grip of this hand that had appeared out of nowhere.

Just as Claire Kendall was about to cry out in surprise, a crisp, familiar scent filled her nostrils.

Her heart skipped a beat. She turned her head in the direction the hand had come from.

In the darkness, in the seat next to her, a chiseled face came into view.

’Miles Warren?!’

Claire Kendall’s eyes widened in astonishment.

She was about to speak when her phone vibrated. It was a message from Miles Warren.

[You’re wearing so little.]

Claire Kendall glanced around. No one seemed to have noticed anything unusual.

She typed quickly.

[What are you doing here?]

Miles Warren glanced down at his phone and replied.

[If I hadn’t come, I was afraid someone would misbehave. And sure enough, you’re being very naughty.]

For some reason, Claire Kendall felt that Dr. Warren had been especially clingy these past few days.

[We’re going to the beach later, so it’s convenient. Look, everyone else is dressed like this.]

Miles Warren glanced at the screen but didn’t reply.

The pressure from his hand increased.

Claire Kendall could clearly feel the searing heat of his palm, which carried a subtle, aggressive air.

She wanted to move his hand away but was afraid a large movement would attract attention.

His hand showed no sign of retreating. Growing bolder, he rubbed his thumb firmly against the side of her thigh.

Tense, Claire Kendall unconsciously pressed her legs together.

She shot him an indignant glare.

[Get your hand off me. Stop fooling around.]

He replied.

[Not until you stop squeezing my hand with your legs.]

Claire Kendall was so mortified she wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.

Beside her, Ian Rhodes suddenly spoke up. "Claire, what’s wrong? Your face is so red. Are you not feeling well?"

"I..." She feigned composure. "It’s nothing. It’s probably just a little warm in here."

Ian Rhodes offered, "Should we go get some air?"

His grip on her leg tightened, and a dull ache spread across her delicate skin.

Steeling herself, Claire Kendall refused, "N-no, that’s okay. This movie is quite interesting. I want to see how it ends."

"Alright, Claire," Ian Rhodes said with a smile, adding, "I’ll stay with you."

Those four words made the man’s hand even more wicked, and a shiver went down Claire Kendall’s spine.

She didn’t register a single thing that happened in the second half of the movie.

Before the movie ended, Miles Warren got up and left in the darkness.

Claire Kendall’s phone screen lit up.

[You are not to go to the beach dressed like that.]

The large screen went dark, the lights came on, and everyone began to leave, chatting and laughing as they headed for a walk on the beach.

"Claire, the tide’s going out right now. We can walk a little farther out," Ian Rhodes said, his smile radiant.

"Um, I..." Claire Kendall demurred. "I think the travel might not be agreeing with me. I’m going to head back and rest."

Before Ian Rhodes could say anything, Claire Kendall scurried off.

The moment she swiped her key card and opened the door, she saw Miles Warren standing in the entryway.

Claire Kendall was startled. "How did you get in?"

Miles Warren’s tone was calm. "This resort is a property of the Warren family."

She let out a laugh of exasperation.

She reached out and hooked a finger under Miles Warren’s chin, her tone a mix of smugness and teasing.

"Dr. Warren, how long have we been apart, and you’ve already chased me all the way to the resort? Can’t bear to be without me?"

Miles Warren let her mischievous fingers trace over him, not moving to stop her.

He was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Yes."

It was a firm, clear response.

Claire Kendall hadn’t expected him to admit it so readily. She blinked, her smile widening.

Her fingertip moved from his chin to his lips, tapping them lightly.

"But I seem to recall that when I was chasing a certain someone, he wouldn’t even give me the time of day."

Miles Warren took her hand. "I was blind back then."

Suddenly, a knock came at the door.

Ian Rhodes’s voice came from outside.

"Claire, how are you? Are you feeling any better?"

Claire Kendall froze. She was about to answer when an arm snaked around her waist.

The next second, she was lifted off her feet. Miles Warren set her down on the low cabinet in the entryway, trapping her in the corner with no escape.

Caught off guard, she let out a small cry.

Hearing the noise, Ian Rhodes’s voice grew more urgent. "Claire, what was that? I brought some medicine. Open the door. Taking something will help if you’re not feeling well."

Just as Claire Kendall was about to speak, Miles Warren’s lips came crashing down on hers.

She let out a muffled groan as he bit her lip.

Outside, Ian Rhodes began to pound on the door more violently.

"Claire, what’s wrong? Claire, say something!"

Claire Kendall was frantic, but the man showed no intention of stopping. He held her waist with one hand and gripped her wrist with the other.

’He’s doing this on purpose!’

Claire Kendall had a strange feeling.

It was as if the normally calm and self-possessed Miles Warren actually wanted Ian Rhodes to find out.

Ian Rhodes grew even more anxious. "Claire, wait for me! I’m going to the front desk to get a key."

Miles Warren finally released her. He pressed his lips to Claire Kendall’s ear and rasped, "Tell him to get lost."
