The bedroom was warm and quiet. Beside Leo, the three girls were fast asleep.
Elara lay on her side, breathing softly with her face pressed into the pillow. Celestia had rolled onto her back, her purple hair spread across the sheets. Next to her, Seraphina held the edge of the blanket with both hands, a calm, peaceful smile on her face.
Leo slid out from under the covers without making a sound.
He pulled on his dark trousers, a simple shirt, and his coat. He checked on the three girls one last time, making sure the blanket covered their shoulders, then walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.
The morning air in the hallway was cool. From the courtyard below, heavy thudding sounds came through the open windows.
Thud. Thud. Crack.
Leo walked down the stone stairs and stepped out into the inner training courtyard.
The sun was barely coming up over the trees, casting long gray shadows across the sand.
In the middle of the yard stood Knight Captain Valerie.
She was not resting. She was stripped down to her sleeveless leather tunic and gray trousers, her bare shoulders slick with sweat in the cold morning air. Her heavy steel armor lay stacked in a pile against the wooden fence.
Valerie held her massive iron greatsword with both hands, swinging it with furious, relentless power against a thick wooden practice post.
Crack!
The heavy blade bit deep into the wood, sending splinters flying across the sand. Valerie did not pause. She yanked the blade free, spun on her heel, and struck the post again from the other side.
Crack!
Her breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps. Her knuckles were bruised and raw from gripping the hilt, but she kept swinging, her jaw clenched so tight her teeth ground together.
She was not training. She was punishing herself.
Leo walked across the sand, his footsteps quiet.
Valerie lifted the greatsword for another heavy downward strike, putting all her weight into the blow.
Leo stepped inside her reach.
He raised his bare left hand and caught the flat side of the heavy iron blade between his fingers, stopping the strike cold in mid-air.
Valerie gasped, her momentum suddenly checked. She tried to pull the sword back, but Leo held the steel with iron strength.
"Let go!" Valerie shouted, her voice cracked and raw. "Let go, Lord Leo!"
"That is enough, Valerie," Leo said, his voice calm and steady.
"It is not enough!" Valerie pulled against his grip with both hands, her boots digging into the sand. Her face was bright red with sweat and tears. "I have to get stronger. I was weak. I was blind. Three years... three years I stood in front of that bastard, taking hits from monsters, thinking I was protecting a hero!"
She let out a frustrated cry, trying to force the blade down, but Leo did not move an inch.
"You were not weak," Leo said, stepping closer. "You did your job. Noel was the coward."
"Then why did I not see it?!" Valerie screamed, her voice breaking completely. "I am the Vanguard Captain! My job was to know who was at my back! I let him fool me... I let him use Seraphina... I let him use all of us!"
Her grip on the hilt finally slipped.
Her hands were shaking so hard she could no longer hold the weight. The heavy greatsword dropped from her fingers, landing with a dull thud in the sand.
Valerie stared down at her empty, bleeding hands.
Her knees gave out.
Leo caught her by the shoulders before she hit the ground, pulling her upright against his chest.
Valerie did not pull away. Her hands gripped the front of his dark coat, her forehead dropping against his shoulder as deep, heavy sobs shook her entire body.
"I gave him three years," Valerie wept, her tears soaking through his shirt. "I slept on cold dirt. I took every blow on the front line. I never asked for money or glory. I just wanted to be a knight who protected people."
Leo wrapped his arm around her back, holding her steady against him.
"You are a knight, Valerie," Leo said quietly into her ear. "A real one. The best vanguard in this empire."
"A knight with no party," Valerie choked out, her fingers twisting into his coat. "A shield with nothing left to protect."
"You are not alone, Valerie," Leo said, his voice warm and steady. "You still have Seraphina. You have Elara, Celestia, and Maya. And you can try to trust me. You will never have to stand in front of a coward again."
Valerie stayed pressed against his chest for a long time, letting out three years of silent exhaustion, pain, and betrayal in the quiet courtyard.
The morning breeze blew across the sand, carrying away the heat of her anger.
Gradually, her sobs slowed. Her trembling fingers relaxed against his coat, and her breathing turned smooth and steady.
Leo reached down and picked up a clean towel from the bench, gently wiping the sweat and dirt from her face.
Valerie looked up at him. Her eyes were red, but the wild, self-destructive fury was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, exhausted clarity.
"I am sorry for yelling at you, Lord Leo," Valerie murmured, looking down at her boots.
"Do not apologize for having a spine," Leo said, offering her a small, dry smile.
Leo handed her a wooden cup of fresh water from the pump. Valerie took it with both hands, drinking the whole cup in long, thirsty gulps.
She set the cup down, then looked at her greatsword lying in the sand.
"What do I do now?" Valerie asked softly.
Leo looked at her, his expression calm and confident.
"Go inside, get a warm bath, and eat breakfast with Maya and Seraphina," Leo said. "After you rest, we will go to the imperial court. We are going to make sure Noel never holds a sword again."
A spark of real life returned to Valerie’s golden eyes. A small, fierce nod answered his words.
"Yes, Lord Leo," Valerie said.
She picked up her greatsword, wiped the sand from the blade, and walked toward the mansion with steady, confident steps.
Leo watched her go, then turned and walked inside to check on the others.
