The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 584: Onyx Was Going To Ride This Until The Wheels Fell OffThe infirmary door opened and Bellatrix Drakenfell entered carrying Onyx in one arm, a bouquet of ivory peonies in the other, and enough audacity to fuel a small continent.
Petra followed two steps behind, holding a box wrapped in Nightspire silk so dark it looked like liquid shadow, tied with a bow made from Valdressian ribbon that cost more per inch than most families spent on dinner per month. Avalon was perched on her other arm in a new tuxedo, midnight blue with silver thread detailing along the lapels, his scales buffed to a luminous steel-blue that caught every sconce in the hallway and threw it back in fractals.
The room went still.
Every man in the chamber, and there were too goddamn many of them, processed the visual in his own way and at his own speed.
Dexmon’s brow furrowed so hard it could have cracked walnuts.
Gavriel, still half-reclined in the corner chair with fresh wraps on his chest, opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. Closed it again. He was a fish. A confused, green-glowing fish.
Nightspire, who stood with his arms crossed on the far wall, looked at Bellatrix the way one apex predator acknowledges another entering the same clearing. Measured. Interested. Storing data.
Maelor stood near Nightspire, hands clasped, mismatched eyes tracking the procession with the clinical fascination of a mage with excellent taste watching a specimen wearing something he actually approved.
Tiberon was by the window.
His gaze moved from Onyx to Avalon. Both dragons. Both in tuxedos. Both stolen from the Draken Forces training field where they were supposed to be running aerial readiness drills under Handler Caelum, who was probably standing in an empty formation slot right now wondering if early retirement came with dental.
Tiberon pinched the bridge of his nose.
Both dragons. She wasn’t even hiding it anymore.
Fin was standing beside the bed, one hand on Serena’s arm, the other hanging at his side. His eyes locked onto the black-scaled dragon cradled against the queen’s chest with the focused confusion of a dragon-dad staring at his bonded who should have been at school.
Onyx was "asleep."
The quotation marks were necessary because Onyx’s version of sleep involved zero snoring, perfectly arranged limbs, and a level of stillness so practiced it bordered on theatrical. His wings were folded. His tail was curled. His chin rested in the crook of Bellatrix’s elbow. The performance was flawless.
Fin could feel his bonded through their connection. Onyx was wide awake. His little dragon heart was hammering at triple speed, broadcasting the emotional signature of a creature who knew his father was in the room and had committed fully to the lie and was going to ride it until the wheels fell off.
One gold eye cracked open. A sliver. Just enough to scan the room, locate Fin, and register that dad had noticed.
The eye snapped shut so fast it created its own breeze.
Fin stared at the dragon. The dragon continued to sleep.
"I brought flowers," Bellatrix announced, setting the peonies on the nightstand with the practiced authority of a woman who had decided the nightstand was hers. "And a gift. For Serena."
The room’s collective attention shifted to the flowers with the synchronized wariness of men who had seen this movie before and remembered how it ended.
"Those aren’t Nightvein Lilies, are they?" Gavriel asked from the chair, his voice carrying the specific caution of a man who had watched Serena almost choke to death from the last bouquet this woman delivered.
Several heads turned to the peonies. Alaric, who had been reviewing Serena’s chart near the IV stand, glanced at the flowers and then at Bellatrix with an expression that said he was two seconds from quarantining the entire arrangement.
Bellatrix looked at Gavriel. Then at Alaric. Then at the collection of men who were eyeing her peonies like she’d walked in carrying a live grenade wrapped in petals.
"They are peonies, you paranoid pack of halfwits," she said, flicking the concern away with a wave that dismissed every suspicious glance in the room simultaneously. "I know the difference between a flower and a weapon. When I choose a weapon, I choose a weapon. When I choose a flower, I choose a flower. The overlap is coincidental and historical and I will thank you all to stop conflating the two."
Petra stepped forward and placed the box on the side table beside Serena’s bed. The Nightspire silk wrapping caught the candlelight and did something expensive to the shadows around it.
"And the box?" Dexmon asked. "I’m assuming it has clothing inside of it. You. My mother. Who called her Skeletor Silver-Whore."
"Semantics." Bellatrix adjusted Onyx on her hip. The dragon remained heroically unconscious.
"Did you poison it?" Gavriel asked point blank.
"Did I POISON the," Bellatrix sputtered, her composure cracking at the edges like porcelain under pressure. "It is a GIFT. A thoughtful, expensive, beautifully wrapped GIFT from a mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law, and every single one of you is ruining it with your complete inability to accept generosity without conducting a goddamn forensic investigation."
She turned to Tiberon by the window, expecting backup. Tiberon’s expression gave her the same amount of support as a paper umbrella in a hurricane. Which was none.
The bathing chamber door opened.
Elara stepped out carrying a damp cloth for Serena’s forehead, her attention on the compress, her mind on the fever that hadn’t fully broken. She walked three steps into the room before her peripheral vision snagged on the box.
She stopped.
Her eyes went wide. Not with suspicion. With recognition.
"Oh my gosh." The cloth lowered. Her face lit up like a woman who had been expecting this exact delivery and was delighted it had arrived. "Serena is going to be so excited."
The room recalibrated.
Every man in the chamber looked at Elara, then at Bellatrix, then back at Elara, then at the box, then at each other, conducting a silent group survey that produced a unanimous result: since when the fuck are these two friends?
Nobody said it aloud. The saying-aloud would have required admitting they were confused, and admitting confusion in a room full of Alphas and kings was the emotional equivalent of stripping naked at a council meeting.
Then Elara saw Avalon.
