The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 585: Onyx Is Gifted, Actually

The room recalibrated.

Every man in the chamber looked at Elara, then at Bellatrix, then back at Elara, then at the box, then at each other, conducting a silent group survey that produced a unanimous result: since when the fuck are these two friends?

An alliance between Bellatrix Drakenfell and Elara Vaelor was so unprecedented that everyone was convinced something had gone catastrophically wrong in the universe.

Then Elara saw Avalon.

She clapped her hands together once, bright and sharp, and crossed to Petra with the focused delight of a woman spotting exactly what she wanted to see.

"Is that a NEW tuxedo? Avalon, look at you! The silver threading is gorgeous. Is that Valdressian? Petra, you outdid yourself."

Avalon preened the way only a creature who was told he was a good boy ten times a day and never had experienced self-doubt could preen.

His wings adjusted by a quarter inch, showing off the fit. His silver eyes found Elara’s and the dragon’s entire body communicated the full-spectrum satisfaction of a creature whose appearance had been acknowledged by the correct person.

Dexmon pinched the bridge of his nose.

Neither Serena nor Elara seemed to grasp that these dragons were military assets. Keyword being military. Assigned to a military training regiment for military purposes. And the military assets were currently wearing formalwear and being complimented on their threading while the military training program wept quietly in a corner.

The Draken Forces training program was being gutted by his mother and celebrated by his Beta Luna, and he was standing in the middle of it watching it happen.

Dexmon opened his mouth and Bellatrix cut him off at the knees.

"Onyx mastered the triangle formation on his first attempt, Dexmon. He is gifted and being held back by a program designed for average dragons, surrounded by idiots who cannot execute a formation pivot without tripping over their own tails. He also asked to see Serena."

She said it like Onyx had a voice and asked her to see Serena. Half of the room assumed she meant she thought that was what Onyx wanted. But Petra knew the truth. Bellatrix was fluent in baby dragon and to her, Onyx had asked her.

"Asked," Dexmon repeated. The word tasted wrong in his mouth. Every word coming out of Bellatrix today tasted wrong.

"Yes, dear," Bellatrix said, placing Onyx on the bed beside Serena. She set him down gently, positioning him near Serena’s hip, his small body curling into the space between her arm and her waist as if the space had been designed for him.

Onyx continued to "sleep."

One gold eye cracked open. The eye found Uncle Dexmon looking directly at him with a face that communicated "I see you, you little shit" with remarkable clarity.

The eye snapped shut. Tighter this time. The lids were pressing together with the force of a dragon who believed that if he squeezed hard enough, invisibility would kick in.

The dragon was a con artist. A scaled, tuxedo-wearing, fake-sleeping little bastard who had figured out that playing dead next to Serena made him untouchable, and he was executing the strategy with the shamelessness of a creature who had never once been held accountable for anything.

Fin watched his bonded pretend to sleep beside his unconscious mate on a bed in another kingdom’s infirmary, wearing a tuxedo, placed there by a queen who had previously tried to poison the woman he was now snuggling against.

He decided this was above his pay grade and returned his attention to Serena’s vitals.

The dragon pressed his body against Serena’s with a pressure that wasn’t theatrical. It was need. The small, involuntary need of a creature whose bonded’s mate was sick and whose proximity was the only medicine he understood. His breathing matched hers. His scales warmed against her skin. And for a moment, beneath every layer of absurdity, the room was just a room with a sick woman and a small dragon who wouldn’t leave her side.

Maelor’s mismatched eyes had been studying the box since Petra set it down. The Nightspire silk. The Valdressian ribbon. The weight distribution suggesting something soft and layered inside. His aesthetic radar had opinions.

"You have excellent taste, Your Majesty," he said, inclining his head toward the wrapping with the precise appreciation of a man who recognized quality materials the way wolves recognized territory.

Bellatrix turned to him. The turning was imperial, chin elevated, but the corners of her mouth softened by a fraction that she would deny existed.

"Thank you, Maelor. Someone had to intervene. They have been putting my daughter-in-law in training suits."

Dexmon blinked.

Gavriel blinked.

Daughter-in-law.

The room processed it. Every man in the room independently arrived at the conclusion that either Bellatrix had suffered a head injury they hadn’t been informed about or the woman had been body-snatched by something with manners and a goddamn heart.

Bellatrix Drakenfell, who had called Serena a Satan worshiper, a clearance-rack Motel 6 slut, and Skeletor Silver-Whore over the course of their acquaintance, had just referred to her as "my daughter-in-law" in front of a room full of witnesses with the casual warmth of a woman who had always used the term and found the surprise on everyone’s faces insulting.

Dexmon opened his mouth. Nothing came out. The wires between his brain and his tongue had been severed by the sheer cognitive violence of hearing his mother claim ownership of a relationship she had spent months trying to destroy.

From the chair in the corner, Gavriel let out a breath that carried the particular weight of a man who had been elbowed in the groin by this woman at one point, who had watched her headbutt his fated mate, who had been present for holy water and wine-goblet warfare, and was now listening to her say "daughter-in-law" with the butter-smooth delivery of a woman who had invented the phrase.

"Since when," he said, slowly, carefully, the way you approach a bomb, "is she your daughter-in-law?"

"Since always, Gavriel. Keep up."

Nightspire, who had been observing the entire performance, gave a private smile.

The smile was small. Controlled. The smile of a connoisseur watching a vintage being poured correctly. Bellatrix Drakenfell was performing a pivot so brazen, so architecturally audacious, that Nightspire’s professional respect had overridden his professional neutrality.

It was directed at Bellatrix.

Game recognized game, Bellatrix’s case a masterclass in court maneuvering.

Tiberon saw it.

His left eye twitched.
