BALE’S POV
Bale had been seated by his bedside, watching through the window as his brother rode off in the distance.
He felt his stomach churn uncomfortably.
He was supposed to be at his side going on this mission.
Exploring the moonstones.
He had been reading, studying the scholars, studying ancient texts about the moonstones and how they were connected to the stories of the stars and the stars themself.
He had tried to tell Aiden that the stars and moonstone were connected.
There was something deeper to unravel than they all thought.
But Aiden, as usual, had brushed him off.
Of course, he had, when he had never wanted him to come along with him in the first place.
To think that Aiden had once been interested in the stars and all their study.
To think that he had been the one to introduce him to everything he was currently interested in and not give a care about it anymore.
Act like it was all so irrelevant and useless.
He heard the doors open, and he turned around.
He saw Ruby coming in with a tray of food.
The sight of her made his eyes light up, and he had no idea when a smile creaked up his face.
"Hey." She said as she brought the tray over to the table nearest my bed. "You’re fully awake now."
"Yes, I am. Thank you." He nodded.
He tried to rise to his feet but felt his legs wobble again.
He almost fell, except she quickly came to his aid by holding his arm.
"Whoa." She said with a light smile, looking up at him. "Careful."
"Thank you." He appreciated. "You did say my legs were going to be weak."
She gently assisted him into a chair.
"I did, didn’t I?" She asked with a grin. "Well, I was told you had an epileptic shock; most wolves who do feel weak or barely feel their legs after the experience."
He could relate.
He wouldn’t just feel weak in the legs. He would feel numb in his whole body while it took him weeks to recover.
"Yes. I understand that. This is the first time I felt zero pain in my body." He remarked. "When I start to recover, my whole body goes stiff. I don’t know what your mum gave me, but I think I want it all the time now."
She had a weak smile, and he wondered if he had said something embarrassing.
"Well, you need to eat." She said, pushing one of the plates to him. "You need the strength, and I did promise I was going to return."
"Yes. I’m sorry about my brother, and now he has behaved towards you." He apologized.
She shrugged indifferently. "It’s fine."
She slowly rose to her feet. "I should be going."
He slowly began to panic.
"Can you please sit with me?" He blurted out without thinking.
She raised a brow.
"I mean... well.... Uhm... errr... I just... don’t want t..tt to be alone right now." He stuttered truthfully.
She looked at him for a couple of seconds before settling back into her seat.
"You’re the son of the Alpha. I’m a peasant; if my clothes don’t already tell, then I should tell you upfront. I’m sure you have more than enough friends who would want to stay with you." She remarked.
Bale looked down at his hands.
Only if she knew.
How could he explain that he was close with barely anyone?
He rather liked to keep to himself and his books.
He shook his head. "I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors about me and how I’m abnormal."
He expected her to lie and say she hadn’t; rather, she surprised him. "I don’t know anything about you being an anomaly, but I did hear a servant say your mother had to carry you for a couple of years before she gave birth."
It surprised him that she was honest, yes, but it didn’t make him feel any better.
His face went red in shame, so he looked down at his hands.
The croissant he had picked up and half-eaten was left in his fingertips.
"But I don’t think you’re abnormal. On the contrary, I think you’re special." She said.
He scoffed.
"Of course. I’ve never heard anyone who survived that long in their mother’s womb. It’s quite an incredible story, if I might be honest. And I think anyone who would survive such circumstances is unique. Special. Just because something is unheard of doesn’t make it bad." She expressed.
It was the first time in his entire life that he had heard someone express it in such a way.
It was soothing in a way he hadn’t expected.
"I am guessing that is the reason why you fell ill." She said.
"Yes. It is." He said. "I do have only a handful of friends. My brother’s best friend’s wife, Delilah, is so interested in the stars. I went to the Crescent pack. Alpha Orion controls it. I met her there, and it’s one of the things I picked up. Fascinating, isn’t it?"
"I’ve never been to the Crescent pack before." She said.
"It’s quite beautiful." He said, memories flashing. "They are currently the youngest Alpha and Luna in wolf world. They also have a little boy named Xaden."
"How lovely." She said.
He nodded and went on. "I’ve always been interested in animals, plants, history, all of that. But from her, I learned so much more about the stars. Some legends and myths need discovering."
She raised a brow. "Then why are you here?"
He cleared his throat. "That’s because little of my research proves that whatever I’m looking for is in this very territory."
She blinked at him, confused, and then paused. "Wait, you mean here?"
He nodded excitedly. "I know. It sounds ludicrous. But my books and my years of study have pointed here. It’s why I came here. There is something in this place, and I want to find it. I have to find it."
