RUBY’S POV

I scowled once he turned away to face his horse.

It was only then that I was able to adjust my stance.

It was, though, the moment he had set eyes on me that I had been transfixed, unable to move.

I watched as he got on his horse and rode off.

Most of all, I wondered why he had not yet called me to answer for my crimes.

Why had I not been executed yet?

Why was my head still on my shoulder?

And again, the fact that Bale was his brother was so ridiculous.

They were so different.

Even when Aiden had come in, the way both brothers had spoken to each other. She knew there was something amiss.

There was some tension between the two brothers.

What she couldn’t place her finger on.

"He is so ravishing, isn’t he?" A female voice said behind me.

I turned around and saw it was none other than Alice, Martha’s daughter.

"You look well and swell," I remarked to her.

She was the one I had been sent to bring medicines for.

"I am." She remarked. "All thanks to you and your mother."

Alice was around the same age as I.

We weren’t particularly friends, but we were cordial enough.

"Glad to see you well," I said.

But she was already at the edge of the balcony, leaning and sighing heavily.

"He is so dreamy." She remarked.

"What?" I asked, confused, walking to where she stood

"The Future Alpha." She said.

I watched as he rode off into the distance.

"Oh," I mumbled.

"It’s a wonder why he is here, isn’t it?" She asked excitedly. "No one ever really cares about our pack, and all of a sudden the future Alpha himself is here?"

I squeezed my face at the thought of him.

"Who knows? Maybe he could fall in love with one of us here and become Luna." She said dreamily.

I looked at her in disbelief.

"There is no way you believe that," I remarked.

She frowned. "Why not?"

"Because that’s something straight out of a fairytale," I remarked dryly.

"But it could." She pouted.

I shook my head. "Men like him would never be with girls like us. Well, at most maybe when they want to please themselves, but their family would never agree to such a union."

"Gosh, Ruby. You’re such a killjoy." Alice laughed.

"I’m just stating the truth." I shrugged indifferently. "They always have someone they want them to marry. The perfect daughter of a great Alpha of some stupid pack. Not someone like us. You would get your heartbroken."

"Who said we can’t dream?" She remarked.

"Didn’t say you can’t," I said, realizing that I was probably dampening her mood. "I just don’t want you hurt."

"I would love to be hurt by someone as handsome as he. Oh, Ruby, don’t you see?" She asked excitedly.

I squeezed my face.

"You don’t see it?" She asked, bewildered. "You don’t see how handsome he is? How ravishing he is?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Oh well." She shrugged. "Perhaps his brother would be more fun to you. He isn’t even the least bit as handsome as his brother. You’ll be surprised they are even brothers, talk less of twins."

"Twins?" I asked, shocked.

"Yeah." She said, tossing her brunette hair. "Ruby, you don’t know? Do you know anything at all? This is very common gossip."

How did I explain to Alice that I barely mingled with people enough to hear gossip?

I shook my head.

She took my arm and led me away from the balcony and into the pack house.

"Well, rumor has it that they were twins. Both in the womb at once." She said as we went down the cold stairs. "The Luna had Aiden first. He was a handsome baby, as you can tell, no issues. But when it came to the second, he refused to come out. They tried and tried, but he wasn’t moving. Somehow he wasn’t ready. So the Luna decided to wait a while. A while turned to weeks, months, and then years."

I blinked in disbelief. "That’s impossible."

"It happened. You can ask your mother. It was the most bizarre thing that had ever happened to anyone. Unheard of. They tried to do everything. Even used magic because magic wasn’t banned then. But there was nothing. A witch had said he wasn’t ready and he would come when he wanted to. And so she carried the pregnancy that way. On Aiden’s third birthday, she had contractions, and he was born."

It was the most unbelievable story I had ever heard.

"He came out fine, I guess. It was a relief, at least. But eventually, he fell ill frequently. He is quite sickly. They have done everything to treat him and find out what’s wrong. But nothing."

I felt a pang in my chest for him.

Poor Bale.

To think that he went through all that.

"When he came into the pack, he was just strange." Alice waved. "He barely talks to any of the she-wolves. Just stuck with his books. I wonder why they let him come here at all."

I felt so sad for Bale.

How he was not an architect of his life, and yet he was suffering for it.

"That’s so sad," I said quietly.

Alice shrugged. "It’s sad that you’re stuck with him, though. I know you assist your mother in healing. I would have lost my mind if I had to work with him when I could be with his brother instead."

She shook her head sympathetically, and I thought she was insane for that statement.

I was pleased to be with Bale and working with him.

Anyone but his dreadful brother.

"I have to be going. I have some chores to do." She said. "Later today, I also need to pull some strings to be Lord Aiden’s personal handmaiden. Wish me luck!"

"Good luck." I waved, and she went off.

To think that all the she-wolves in the pack were crazy for the silly brother made me shiver in disgust.
