AIDEN’S POV
Aiden walked out of the room and took a deep breath the moment he stepped out.
Bale.
His twin brother was so stubborn and always wanted things done his way.
He had told their parents that Bale didn’t need to come on this trip.
He should have insisted.
He wouldn’t be in this mess.
"Need help, my lord?" One of the guards asked, bringing Aiden back to reality.
Aiden shook his head.
"No, I don’t." He remarked and turned away.
As he walked down the old pack house walls, he was in despair.
Of all places, all their annexed territories.
This was the worst.
He had barely made any notice of it growing up.
It was nothing.
Far from all the other packs.
Far from Civilization..
At the edge of the world.
A small town with no special connection to the rest of the packs.
The most they ever got from them were their taxes.
A couple of weeks ago, while he had been reading back home in the moonlight pack, he had been called to his father’s study.
His father relayed to him that some local miners had found evidence of moonstone.
All the existing packs in the world no longer had moonstone.
They had exhausted it to the point where it had literally become extinct.
And yet there were traces of it in a backward territory that no one cared about.
If there was indeed moonstone, then this was going to be a pivotal point in the Moonlight Pack.
It was going to change everything.
It was going to make them richer than they were.
Make them the strongest pack that ever existed.
Perhaps even stronger than the royal wolf family.
It was the answer to all their problems.
Their transformation, wolf powers, wolf magic, shifting, their intelligence, and heightened powers.
Moonstone hadn’t been sighted in over three hundred centuries.
Wolf powers had been redundant.
Not as strong as they used to be.
But with the moonstone, if they did indeed find it, it changed everything.
Every single thing.
And so his parents had sent him to investigate on a low.
"And what happens when other pack members ask where I am?" Aiden had asked a reasonable question.
His father, Alpha Elijah, had waved his hand off.
"It won’t matter. We would say you went on to check some territories. No one can catch wind of this. Who would even believe that a territory so insignificant as that would hold the key to all wolves? That is why you need to go as soon as possible. Find if it’s true and bring victory home."
His father’s hand had been placed on his shoulder, reassuringly.
Aiden had decided he would make his father proud and bring honour to their name.
As the future Alpha of the pack, enemy packs would be suspicious if he left.
And the reason why, when Bale had insisted on going, Aiden had been against it.
Bale was not strong.
His birth had been difficult, hence why he had always been weak and sickly.
Aiden had stated clearly he didn’t want him to go, but Bale had insisted and insisted, and eventually he had no choice.
Especially when their mother had told him to give him a chance.
His worst fears had come to pass; Bale had fallen ill just like he always did back home.
He felt a bead of sweat on his forehead as he walked down the stairs.
He swore in frustration at his brother’s foolishness.
And then he remembered the girl.
He felt his stomach curl.
She had been in Bale’s room again.
Regarded him as though he didn’t matter.
He gritted his teeth in rage at her arrogance.
She made his blood boil.
But he had to do it in a good way.
He had figured out that the healer who had healed Bale was her mother.
And that meant she lived in the pack.
And then it occurred to him.
Had she healed Bale?
He frowned slightly.
She was a mystery that something within him told him he had to unfold.
And he was going to.
He would deal with her at his own pace.
Some female servants greeted him, and in their eyes, he could see their hunger to have him mount them.
They weren’t the usual women he was interested in back home, but they would do.
For later.
He walked out of the pack halls to where his men were waiting.
"My Lord." A Beta named Phil greeted.
There were horses and a party of wolves to escort him to the site.
He was yet to investigate the site himself.
"The men are ready, and the site itself is ready," Phil said.
"And then men who were present when it happened?" Bale asked.
"They were all waiting for you at the site, My Lord," Phil responded.
Aiden was about to mount his horse when his wolf felt someone looking at them.
He slowly turned around and looked up.
None other than the girl stood by a balcony looking down at him.
Their eyes locked, and they stared at each other.
How fascinating that someone so beautiful could be as cruel as she was.
She didn’t break glance.
She kept on staring down at him, daring him to be the one to break eye contact.
The wind blew her red hair while she leaned by the railings.
If you didn’t know she was a peasant, you would assume she belonged there.
You would assume she commanded it as the lady of the pack.
He bit his bottom lip as she made his blood boil.
What fascinated him the most was how his wolf couldn’t sense hers.
It was as though it were nonexistent.
He was going to handle her.
In his own perfect way.
Eventually, he turned back to his horse, forced to be the one to break eye contact.
He mounted his horse and nodded at Phil. "Let’s go."
And they rode off from the pack.
