The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 114: The District Chief’s SonChapter 114: Chapter 114: The District Chief’s Son
Her skin glowed like fine white jade, and her face was so delicate it seemed as though water could be pinched from it. Her smooth black hair was tied into a high ponytail, and as she lowered her head slightly to sign, a strange fragrance drifted over, leaving the young soldiers staring blankly.
Although the girl in the black winter suit was slightly less striking, in an apocalypse plagued by shortages of water and electricity, she was already a rare beauty!
What caught even more attention were the men sitting far diagonally across from them, who looked to be in an exceptionally foul mood.
Even though the queue for male Superpower Users was long and they stood at quite a distance with their masks still firmly in place, the gazes they kept locked onto the three female team members were sharp enough to pierce the air.
Whenever they noticed someone else staring blankly at the female team members, a heavy hostility would instantly radiate from them. It seemingly dropped the temperature of the already freezing air even further, sending a chill down everyone’s spine.
Having finished registering, the three women took their access passes and stood idly by the entrance, waiting for the others.
Suddenly, the registration room door swung open with a loud CLANG. A man in a military uniform led a group of armed soldiers out. He was heavily bearded, and his eyes were so bloodshot it looked as if he had stayed awake all night.
Luna Dawson was looking around when her gaze happened to meet his. Slightly curious but not lingering, she blinked and looked away.
Unexpectedly, the man hurried straight toward her. Stopping in front of the three of them, his tone was polite but unable to conceal his urgency as he stated his identity. "Hello, Ms. Dawson. I’m Stan Stone, the guard for the Chief of the Sixth District. I have a private mission for you. Would it be convenient to have a quick word? It’s quite urgent!"
As he spoke, he pulled out his ID and presented it to Luna.
Luna looked at the man in disbelief. "The Chief of the Sixth District?"
She didn’t know anyone like that in either her past life or her current one.
Stan nodded quickly, his face serious and his voice laced with obvious anxiety. "Our Chief’s son, Ron Rivers, is trapped in the Ninth District International Hospital. The situation is incredibly dire. We urgently need High-level Superpower Users to go and rescue him, and we’d like to ask you to participate in this mission."
Luna frowned upon hearing this. "The Ninth District? A hospital? Why are you looking for us?"
Stan turned his gaze to Rhonda Dawson. His tone grew even more polite, and his eyes were filled with pleading. "This must be Ms. Rhonda Dawson, the Third-tier Superpower User of the Healing System?"
Rhonda returned a gentle smile and nodded.
Stan continued, "I carefully reviewed your registration information. Two Third-tier Superpower Users, along with Aberrant Beasts. And Ms. Dawson, you’re a dual-element Third-tier Superpower User. Since you’re also heading into the Containment Zone, you’re the absolute most suitable rescue squad for the job. Please, you have to help us!"
He paused, then added, "I noticed you all as soon as your vehicle drove in. Your male teammates are still registering, aren’t they? I can already feel their burning gazes from here."
After Stan finished speaking, he raised his hand and waved a greeting to Evan Olson and the others still waiting in line.
Luna immediately understood. This was a district leader trying to recruit capable people to save his son.
"I understand. Tell me the situation, and I’ll consider it," she replied.
Stan sighed anxiously. He spoke rapidly but maintained his politeness, his tone brimming with worry. "Young Master Rivers found a girlfriend from outside. As soon as he returned, he asked Chief Rivers for Crystal Cores to upgrade his girlfriend’s superpower. The Chief didn’t approve of the girl, so he kicked them both out.
"The boy was quite devoted. Furious, he and his girlfriend started the Eternity Squad, recruiting over twenty people under the Chief’s name. In order to get upgrade Crystal Cores for his girlfriend, he impulsively barged straight into the Ninth District International Hospital. There’s a Third-tier water-type mutated plant in the hospital cafeteria, and he wanted to get its Crystal Core as a gift for her.
"They set off in a grand procession yesterday morning, but by the afternoon, only his girlfriend and the vice-captain came running back in a panic, saying that Young Master Rivers was trapped in the hospital. Yesterday evening, we urgently dispatched two ten-man Special Operations Teams to go in, but we’ve completely lost contact with them. The Chief is going crazy with worry."
Luna was intrigued. She chuckled and asked, "A classic tale of charging forward for love. So many people risking their lives just to protect his romance! What kind of superpower does Ron Rivers have?"
Stan’s face darkened at this. He held back for a long time before squeezing out two words, "No superpower."
Luna’s mouth twitched. Without hesitation, she praised, "Badass!"
She didn’t understand, but she was deeply shocked. To sacrifice two Special Operations Teams for nothing—where did a normal person like him get the confidence to challenge a hell-difficulty dungeon like a hospital!
Ron Rivers must have suffered a decade of severe brain damage to do something so incredibly stupid!
Luna actually had no interest in saving anyone.
But that Third-tier water-type mutated plant—that had to be hers!
Anyway, she was going in to collect supplies and gather Crystal Cores. Might as well do it there.
Stan looked helpless, his tone anxious and his brows furrowed tightly. "We really don’t get it either. Ever since he started dating, it’s like he’s been possessed. He used to just be a bit lazy, but now he’s completely lost his mind. Young Master Rivers has been trapped for so long; every minute delayed is another minute of danger."
Luna remained silent.
"What’s even more outrageous," Stan added, his tone tinged with frustration, "is that he listens to whatever his girlfriend says, yet that woman ran back on her own and left Young Master Rivers alone in the Ninth District! The Chief was so furious that he disbanded the Eternity Squad on the spot. Right now, his only concern is saving his son."
Hearing this, Luna remarked, "He’s just an idiot blinded by love!"
Stan was left speechless.
Of course, he thought so too. No wonder Luke Locke had immediately tossed Ron Rivers away like dead weight back then.
However, it wasn’t his place to arbitrarily comment on his superior’s family affairs. Right now, the most urgent matter was to quickly get Luna and her team to help save Young Master Rivers.
Luna raised an eyebrow. "How could two Special Operations Teams completely lose contact?"
Stan shook his head, a look of guilt in his eyes. "After arriving at the hospital, one of the teams lost contact during the latter half of last night. Ever since the apocalypse began, frequent solar flares have caused widespread electromagnetic pulse effects across the entire Blue Star. The transport plane carrying the other team happened to encounter one and tragically crashed.
"The families have caused an uproar at the command center. The Chief has been forced to pacify the families while dealing with accusations from the higher-ups. He hasn’t slept a wink in a day and a night. The mission hall has already issued an emergency bounty. I figured I would just come directly here to recruit people and find some Superpower Users going in today to take on this mission."
Luna cursed inwardly. Ron Rivers was an absolute moron! He was incompetent, blinded by love, and a complete menace. She would have to be an idiot to go save him!
Stan carefully observed Luna’s shifting expressions and continued his persuasion. After all, there were currently very few Third-tier Superpower Users in the entire Kensington Base!
He considered himself lucky to have run into one so soon after arriving.
"Chief Rivers is offering two thousand First Order Crystal Cores and two hundred Second Order Crystal Cores as a reward," he said.
"I’ll do it!" A glint flashed in Luna’s eyes, her expression instantly becoming resolute and saintly. "As they say, with great power comes great responsibility. I am the only one for this job!"
Stan stood there, utterly bewildered.
Had she agreed just like that? Without even asking about the hospital’s details or the level of danger?
Rhonda and Nancy exchanged speechless glances.
Forget it. Luna wasn’t harboring any great sense of righteousness; her soul had clearly just been snatched away by the Second Order Crystal Cores.
The heavy anxiety in Stan’s heart finally lifted significantly. "As long as you can rescue Young Master Rivers, the Crystal Cores will be paid out on the spot, and the Chief will even add an extra sixty Second Order Crystal Cores!"
Luna’s eyes curved into crescents of delight. Looking at Stan’s haggard face, she suddenly found his features exceedingly pleasing to the eye. "Alright, I’ll do my best!"
