The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 121: Gotta Pay MoreChapter 121: Chapter 121: Gotta Pay More
"Wh-why are you looking at me! I’m a Space Superpower User! If I die, none of you will survive!" Barry Chandler leaned against Ron Rivers, staring nervously at Penny Page. "Besides, I’m Chief Rivers’ nephew! Do you dare touch me?!"
He wasn’t like these ordinary people. As a relative of a leader, his family was among the first batch of people brought into the inner Safe Zone after the catastrophe. Although his parents had unfortunately mutated, he had luckily awakened a Space Ability. Thanks to the Crystal Cores provided by his uncle, he had successfully advanced to the Second Order. His spatial storage might only be sixteen square meters right now, but it held plenty of survival supplies. Even if they were trapped for months, it would be enough to feed everyone!
Before the apocalypse, he had just been an ordinary guy who only knew how to eat, drink, and have a good time. But after the world ended, he actually awakened a superpower. Even his uncle, who usually ignored him, now looked upon him favorably because of this rare ability. Therefore, he was naturally at the apex of the survivor pyramid. How could these ordinary people be as precious as him!
Penny Page glared at him, dropping a cold threat. "If anything happens to Cindy, you won’t live to see another day!"
Cindy Sterling shook her head and grabbed Penny’s arm. "I should be fine. That old woman didn’t have any teeth."
As she spoke, she took off her heavy outer down jacket and forcefully rolled up the sleeves of her wool sweater and thick thermal shirt. Her forearm was fair, without a single scratch. Penny finally breathed a sigh of relief, hurriedly helping her pull down her sleeves and drape the jacket back over her shoulders.
Seeing Cindy’s fair skin and her curvaceous figure wrapped in a tight-fitting wool sweater after removing the jacket, Barry’s gaze turned somewhat lecherous.
"You say your arm isn’t hurt, and we’re just supposed to believe you?! What about the rest of your body?! Take everything off and let us see! Otherwise, get out of this team!" As he spoke, he stood up. The flabby cheeks on his face jiggled, and his nose hair peeked out, quivering with every word.
John Jacobs and several soldiers darkened their faces, and Captain Shaw scolded, "Barry, don’t cross the line!"
Meanwhile, Penny grabbed an axe, glaring furiously at him. He was about to charge forward in the next second, but John and another soldier stopped him.
"Paulie! Don’t do anything reckless!" John held him back, terrified that he would actually cleave the man in two.
Everyone could see that Cindy’s clothes were clean, without a single tear from a zombie bite. Naturally, they knew she was fine.
Cindy also pulled her boyfriend back. "Just ignore him. Treat him like a dog..." She paused, suddenly looking at Rollo. The dog was staring at the chaotic group with innocent eyes, its little eyebrows twitching curiously. She hastily corrected herself. "Just... treat him like a barking beast. Let’s ignore him."
Barry wasn’t wrong. The two of them were just ordinary Superpower Users without power or influence. If it weren’t for Ron, no one would have come to the hospital to save them. If they offended Barry, there was no telling what kind of obstacles he would throw in their way once they returned to the Safe Zone. It was best not to provoke him.
"Rest for an hour, then follow me to break out," Luna Dawson instructed. She had no time to watch others squabble. Getting up, she opened the suites on this floor one by one, cleared out the zombies, and stored a series of medical equipment and useful supplies into her spatial storage.
When Luna returned holding the severed limb of an Aberrant Zombie, the nurse’s station was a mess. The sound of several people munching on compressed biscuits was crisp, CRUNCH CRUNCH. Barry was still muttering complaints.
"I’m just saying, are these military compressed biscuits meant for human consumption? It hurts my throat just trying to swallow. If I had known, I would’ve asked my uncle for two more boxes of chocolates to keep in my spatial storage!" Barry smacked his lips while wiping the biscuit crumbs from the corners of his mouth with his sleeve, his fat face shiny with grease.
Luna chuckled lightly and tossed the zombie head she had just excavated into the corner. It landed with a dull THUD, startling Barry so much that he nearly choked on his biscuit.
"The hour is up. Get moving. If you keep dragging your feet, the zombies will surround this place so tightly that no one will be able to leave." Luna leaned against the doorframe, the bloodstains on her purple clothes already dried into a dark brown. Her gaze was indifferent.
John immediately stood up, patted the dust off his uniform, and beckoned to his team members. "Hurry up, everyone! Check your weapons and follow Miss Dawson!"
Only Ron dawdled. He leaned against the wall, his face pale, unable to stand up for a long time. "Wait, wait, wait! My legs are like jelly, I can’t walk! After running around all day, I’m exhausted. Can we rest for another half an hour?"
"Cut the crap," Luna glanced at him, her tone completely unceremonious. "I’m here to save your life, not to be your nanny. You can either walk on your own, or get eaten by zombies. Pick one."
Ron’s face turned red, then white from the rebuke, but he didn’t dare argue. He could only allow John and Barry to slowly help him up, muttering under his breath. "Seriously, such a terrible attitude. How much did my dad pay you for you to treat me like this? If I had known, I would’ve asked my dad to send someone else..."
Luna sneered. "Someone else? The Special Operations Department sent two teams, and now there are only these four guys left."
Hearing this, John and the other three soldiers darkened their expressions. Thinking of the tragic deaths of their teammates, their hearts grew heavy. They were questioning their own abilities and reflecting on their decisions, believing that they had caused the sacrifice of their comrades. All of them fell into deep internal torment.
Seeing this, Barry quickly sidled up to Luna, the fat on his belly jiggling. "Miss Dawson! Miss Dawson! Look at me! I’m Chief Rivers’ nephew, Barry Chandler! You have to protect me! Don’t let a single zombie lay a finger on me!"
Luna looked him up and down in disgust. "Protect you? I only accepted the mission to save Ron Rivers. That didn’t include you."
"Hey? How can you say that!" Barry grew anxious, his voice rising by an octave. "I’m Chief Rivers’ nephew! If you don’t protect me, my uncle won’t let you off!"
"Really? I’m so scared." Luna flashed a friendly smile. "I can protect you, but it’ll cost extra."
Barry’s face stiffened. "How... how much extra?"
"Not much," Luna raised an eyebrow. "Take out all the remaining Crystal Cores you used to replenish your superpower during this trip to the restricted zone, along with all the supplies in your spatial storage. Otherwise, you can stay here and keep the zombies company."
Barry was speechless. His face turned green. Those Crystal Cores and supplies were his treasures!
"Make up your mind quickly. Who knows when the zombies from downstairs will rush up. I might change my mind by then."
However, looking at Luna’s icy stare and thinking about the dense horde of zombies outside, he could only grit his teeth. He reluctantly pulled a box out of his spatial storage and handed it to her.
"It’s all here! One hundred and fourteen First Order Crystal Cores, not a single one missing! You better keep your word!"
Luna took it, opened it for a look, and nodded in satisfaction. "And the supplies."
Barry looked at Ron, who urged him, "Are supplies more important, or is your life?!"
Hearing this, Barry clenched his jaw. Piles of supplies appeared in the open space of the nurse’s station. Luna didn’t even bat an eyelid; with a mere thought, she stored them all into her spatial storage. The others watched in absolute bewilderment, shocked by the abundance of Barry’s supplies, and equally shocked by Luna’s superpower talent that allowed her to clear everything away without even getting close.
Currently, Space Superpower Users had to touch items one by one to store them, and storing just a few square meters would overdraw their spiritual power, forcing them to take a rest.
Luna sensed the variety of the supplies, and the corners of her mouth curled into a delighted arc. "Alright, you can tag along. Don’t cause any trouble for me."
After Luna’s friendly negotiation, the team was allowed to bring along an extra piece of dead weight. Satisfied, Luna looked at the others. "The rest of you can be considered my complimentary gift. Keep up properly and don’t hold us back."
Everyone was left speechless.
Fine, they were just an add-on bonus for this job. Everyone obediently nodded, honestly following the boss’s arrangements.
The young soldiers looked at Luna with stars in their eyes. This woman possessed dual superpowers! Of course they would obediently listen and do as they were told.
The group followed Luna upstairs. Rollo walked at the very front, occasionally launching superpower attacks at the incoming zombies.
"URGH! ARGH!"
Nurse zombies with gaping maws reached out their hands, charging toward the group with bizarre strides.
SQUELCH!
SQUELCH SQUELCH SQUELCH!
Before they could even get close, bloody holes pierced by wind whirlwinds appeared on their foreheads. One by one, the lifeless bodies fell to the ground in silence.
