Chapter 124: Chapter 124: In the Way

"Ah!" Cindy Sterling was pushed and stumbled, nearly getting entangled by the vines. Fortunately, Penny Page had been guarding her side closely. Penny reacted quickly, yanking Cindy back and shielding her tightly in her arms. She glared at Barry Chandler. "You bastard!"

John Jacobs and the young soldiers raised their guns, wildly spraying bullets at the vines.

Barry Chandler shoved past the shooting men blocking his way. "What the hell are you still shooting for?! Get out of my way!"

At that moment, several thick vines suddenly coiled up. With a swift SWISH, they dragged Ron Rivers—who had already suffered a Spirit breakdown from terror and was slumped on the floor—and a soldier who had been knocked off balance by Barry out through the broken window. Only two shrill screams echoed before absolute silence fell instantly.

Taking advantage of the chaos, Cindy and Penny were the first to slip into the ward.

Barry followed closely behind. Seeing he was about to rush into the ward, he yelled, "Don’t you two dare close the door! I’m Chief Rivers’ nephew! Just try closing it!"

Before he could finish, Luna Dawson delivered a spinning kick right to his fat belly. Barry flew backward like a kicked ball and crashed heavily to the floor.

"Ah—! Luna Dawson! How dare you kick me?!"

His scream was barely out before the vines, wildly secreting corrosive acid, wrapped around him. They devoured his flesh and blood in an instant, and soon, he too stopped moving.

Everyone on the scene was stunned into absolute silence. No one dared to speak, and they even lightened their breathing.

John and the soldiers widened their eyes at Luna, their gazes filled with shock and awe.

They thought, "This boss really dares to kill!"

Luna glanced at Barry’s remains, her tone flat. "Too noisy. With Ron gone, a piece of trash like you is even more useless. You’re just in the way."

She turned to John and his men. "You three, get in as well. Shut the door, protect yourselves, and don’t come out!"

Knowing they would only hold Luna back out here, John didn’t dare delay for a second. He and his teammates immediately ducked into the ward and locked the door tight.

Inside the ward, everyone held their breath. They could only hear the RUSTLE of vines whipping around outside, the SIZZLE of acid corroding the floor, and the sharp SWOOSH of Luna swinging her Triangular Spike through the air.

Everyone’s heart was clenched tight. They didn’t know if they would make it out alive.

Seeing them safely hidden, Luna immediately leaped onto the windowsill and fell backward. Rollo dashed forward and steadily caught the falling Luna on his back.

As soon as they ascended to the seventeenth floor, they spotted a dark green vine dragging two humanoid Leaf Cocoons, about to flee toward the roof. She raised her hand and unleashed several Water Blades, slashing at the Leaf Cocoons binding the men.

The vine was incredibly agile. Sensing the presence of the Fourth Rank Rollo, it fled at blinding speed, and Luna only managed to sever one of the massive cocoons.

Rollo swooped over with a WHOOSH. Luna reached out, grabbing the rescued man and placing him on Rollo’s back.

Luna fired a massive Water Blade that cleaved open the wall of the seventeenth floor. Dust and debris billowed instantly, which Rollo promptly blew away with a gust of wind.

The remaining vine was coiled by the elevator. Seeing the wall split open, it immediately wrapped around the other cocoon and scurried up the exterior wall. The vines of that cocoon pulsed rhythmically as the creeper digested the person inside, who visibly shortened by a margin in a matter of seconds.

Seeing the man was about to be completely consumed, Luna cursed aloud, "Don’t even think about running!"

Rollo and Luna conjured countless Water Bombs and Wind Blades, launching them all at once to pin the fleeing vine firmly against the wall.

Rollo puffed out his snout. Instantly, hurricane-force winds danced wildly around them, forming a semi-circular transparent barrier out of thin air that trapped most of the creeper vines within a wind array.

Sensing the danger, the creeper furiously lashed at the wall. Glass and tiles plummeted downward with a CLATTER as it desperately tried to continue its escape.

But at that moment, the Wind Dragon inside the barrier violently tore through countless vines. The cocoon was instantly severed and plummeted toward the ground. Seeing it was about to smash into the earth, Rollo skillfully maneuvered his body, swooping down at top speed to catch the human cocoon just before it hit the ground.

Rollo carried the three of them upward. Waiting for the right moment, Luna conjured a water curtain for support and hurled the two rescued men back through the sixteenth-floor window.

The creeper frantically tried to maintain its unshredded vines, seemingly aiming to sever its limbs to survive. Luna watched as it yanked several thick vines out of its main body like pulling weeds, bringing out pale, tender roots connected to dense, fine filaments.

Seeing that the vines would soon break free, Luna raised her hand and manifested a massive net of Water Blades, slicing down along with the entire wall. However, one exceptionally thick vine still managed to slip away and dart onto the roof.

On the sixteenth floor, the group was shocked by the commotion outside. Entire sections of the wall crashed down with deafening BANGS, dark green slime sprayed everywhere, and huge plumes of thick smoke billowed from the exterior stairwell wall.

Luna pulled out a flamethrower and rushed to the roof with Rollo. Along the wall of the barrier, with a fierce WHOOSH, a Wind Blade swept up a massive blaze that cascaded down the side of the building.

The severed vine didn’t even have time to get far before it was completely incinerated by the flames. Along with the main body that had been shredded into creeper juice inside the barrier, it turned to ash and crumbled to the bottom of the building.

John and his teammates watched as, following the successive onslaught of wind, water, and smoke, snakes of fire surged down the entire wall!

They were absolutely dumbfounded!

They deeply realized just how terrifyingly powerful this girl and her dog were.

Riding Rollo, Luna glided down to the bottom of the building to inspect the wreckage. She returned with a newly ascended Fourth Rank Crystal Core packed with blue-green rutile crystals, her face immediately lighting up with a beaming smile.

Just as she stored the Crystal Core into her spatial storage, several loud explosions echoed from the distance. Luna looked toward the sound and saw that the outpatient building had even tilted slightly.

"Oh, looks like they’ve run into a big guy over there, too."

Rollo wrinkled his little black nose and panted happily, looking extremely excited.

Luna raised her hand to pet his head. Seeing Rollo’s cheerful demeanor, she figured there wouldn’t be any major problems over there. With that, she happily rode Rollo back to the sixteenth floor.

She needed to hurry and check how those abducted "humanoid crystal cores" were doing.

Seeing the battle outside end, the people on the sixteenth floor cautiously crept out. Because the seventeenth to nineteenth floors had two of their walls sheared off, countless chunks of concrete, glass, and bricks had collapsed onto the sixteenth floor.

The two humanoid cocoons near the window had been buried under the dust and rubble, and Luna was struggling to dig them out.

The group hurried forward to lend a hand. The dead creeper vines visibly withered and shriveled up, allowing everyone to clear them away without much effort.

Luna quickly took out a pre-filled bottle of ordinary spirit spring water from her space. Prying their mouths open, she poured it in. The unconscious Special Operations Team member was quite lucky to be completely unharmed, waking up the moment he swallowed the spirit spring water.

After conducting a brief check, John supported Ron Rivers, only to discover that Ron had actually shrunk by a margin!

Everything below his calves had been completely corroded away. The wounds were oozing yellowish-black pus, and the corrosion even showed signs of spreading upward!

A few seconds after the vines retreated, Ron’s face rapidly turned a sickly sallow. Having subconsciously swallowed the spirit spring water, he slowly woke up, staring at his legs in utter disbelief.

Then, the skin on his calves turned slack. His trembling hands reached out as if wanting to touch them, but at his contact, the skin tore right off the wound. The peeled skin had long since separated from the blood-red fascia and flesh...

"Captain... look..." A Special Operations Team member’s voice trembled, staring at the scene in disbelief.
