Adrian reached the edge of the shaft before Daniel could stop him.
"Adrian."
He looked down. The opening wasn’t as deep as it first appeared — dust drifting through the emergency light, a metal platform roughly fifteen metres below, a narrow maintenance ladder running down one side.
A sound echoed up from below. Slow, mechanical, regular.
Clank. Pause. Clank.
Daniel came to his side. "You’re not actually going down there."
"I am."
"Of course you are." He looked toward the western wing, where the security detail was already moving people clear. "Give me sixty seconds to get everyone away from the collapse zone."
"Take a hundred and twenty. I’m not going anywhere until you’re back."
Vane appeared beside them, his face pale but composed. "If you’re going down, I’m coming."
"You’ve spent an hour telling me this was dangerous," Adrian said.
"It is. That’s why I’m coming instead of letting you go alone."
The grey-coated man stepped forward. "So am I."
Adrian studied him. "Still not telling me your name?"
"Marcus Halloway." He said it flatly, like a concession rather than an introduction. "You should know who’s standing next to you when the lights go out."
Adrian nodded once. "Fine. Let’s go."

Halloway went first this time, moving down the ladder with the unhurried competence of someone who had done this kind of descent before. Vane followed, then Adrian, then Daniel.
The shaft smelled different from the levels above — a faint chemical scent mixed with something dry and metallic, like an old workshop that had been sealed rather than abandoned.
They reached the platform. A narrow corridor opened ahead, unlit. Daniel switched on his flashlight.
"How far does this go?" he asked.
"Not far," Halloway said. "According to what little the observer programme was told, this level runs maybe forty metres before it terminates."
"Terminates in what?"
"Thomas’s original workshop. Before the estate was expanded, before the reactor was installed above it — this was the first thing he built here."
Vane looked at him sharply. "You know that? I didn’t know that."
"The custodians were given a briefing document in 1988, after Thomas’s actual death. Most of it was operational — how to maintain the estate, who to report anomalies to. There was a single paragraph about the original lab. I’d forgotten it until we started walking."
They moved forward. The corridor was narrower than the levels above, the walls made from the same dark composite material Vane had identified earlier — an early thermal-shielding compound, ugly but functional.
At the end of the corridor stood a plain metal door. No handle. A small glass panel at chest height.
Adrian approached and placed his hand against it.
The glass warmed. A thin line of light traced beneath his palm, followed by text.
STERLING PRIMARY WORKSHOP — LINEAGE ACCESS.
The door unlocked with a mechanical sound considerably gentler than anything they’d heard above — a simple solenoid release, not the heavy vault mechanism from the first gate.
It swung open.

The room beyond was smaller than Adrian expected. A proper laboratory, not a chamber built for ceremony — workbenches along two walls, cabinets of hand tools, a drafting table with yellowed paper still pinned to it, and in the centre, a piece of equipment about the size of a small car, covered in a dust sheet.
Daniel’s flashlight swept the room. "This is it? This is what caused all of that upstairs?"
"This is where it started," Halloway said. "What’s upstairs is forty years of expansion on top of what he built down here first."
Adrian walked to the covered equipment and pulled the sheet away.
Underneath was a manufacturing rig — smaller and cruder than anything at Calder, but recognisable. A material feed mechanism. A patterning head. An inspection station. The same basic architecture as the micro-texturing line Miriam’s team had built independently, except built by hand, decades earlier, with components Adrian recognised as period-appropriate 1970s industrial hardware repurposed for a problem nobody else in the world had been working on yet.
"He built the prototype for Helios," Adrian said quietly.
"He built the prototype for what became Helios," Vane corrected. "It wasn’t originally about batteries. Thomas’s early notes were about materials science generally — he was trying to solve interface stability for high-frequency power electronics. The battery application only occurred to him later, when the same geometry turned out to solve a completely different problem."
Adrian looked at a stack of notebooks on the nearest bench, similar to the one in his coat but older, the leather more worn.
"Where’s the containment cylinder from the level above? The lattice component?"
Halloway checked a cabinet along the far wall. Inside, mounted on a bracket, was a smaller version of what they’d seen upstairs — a metallic lattice structure, roughly the size of a fist, held in place not by any visible support but by a faint shimmer around it.
"There it is," he said. "The one above was a later, larger iteration. This is the original."
Daniel leaned in carefully. "It’s floating."
"It’s suspended," Vane said, moving closer. "Electromagnetically. There’s a coil assembly built into the bracket — you can see the housing if you look at the base. Thomas was using magnetic levitation to hold the component in a stable position while it charged, because physical contact during the charging cycle degraded the material. It’s the same principle as maglev trains, just miniaturised and built forty years before anyone commercialised the idea for consumer products."
Adrian looked at it more closely. Now that Vane had said it, the mechanism was obvious — a coil housing at the base, a corresponding magnetic element embedded in the lattice itself, the whole thing balanced in a stable field the way a maglev demonstration toy balanced above a track.
Not impossible. Just early. Decades ahead of its commercial application, built in a private workshop by a man with enough capital and enough patience to solve a problem nobody else was even asking yet.
"Why would this trigger something upstairs?" Daniel asked.
"Because the reactor and this component are connected," Vane said. "The reactor was never meant to power the whole estate. It was built specifically to charge components like this one — to run large current through the lattice during formation, which is apparently what stabilises the microscopic geometry permanently. When Helios’s manufacturing model started producing the same self-stabilising behaviour Miriam reported, the monitoring system upstairs — which has been dormant but not dead for fifty years — recognised the signature and began preparing to do what it was originally built to do."
"Charge something," Adrian said slowly.
"Yes."
"Which is why it’s been venting pressure and cycling erratically. It’s an old system trying to execute a procedure it hasn’t run in decades, without a technician present to manage it properly."
"That’s my reading," Vane said. "It’s dangerous because it’s neglected industrial equipment behaving unpredictably under load. Not because of anything else."
Adrian looked at Halloway. "You said something was recognising the technology I’d built. This is what you meant."
"Yes." Halloway’s voice had lost its earlier edge. "We didn’t know the mechanism. We only knew the pattern — every time in the last fifty years that someone got close to reproducing Thomas’s manufacturing geometry, the estate’s systems became active again. It happened twice before, decades apart, both times with research groups that had no idea this place existed. Both times the activity died down again because neither group ever completed the process the way your team did."
"What happened to those groups?"
"Nothing dramatic. They hit the same wall Thomas hit — an interface layer they couldn’t stabilise without his fourth-layer geometry, which he never published and never licensed. Both programmes eventually stalled and were shelved commercially."
Adrian looked at the lattice again. "You said the custodians believed I was moving too fast."
"We did. We still do, somewhat." Halloway looked at him directly for the first time without any performance in it. "You have companies developing batteries, vehicles, communications infrastructure, and semiconductors simultaneously, at a pace that took Thomas Sterling forty years to approach cautiously and alone. Our concern was never mystical. It was practical. A private company holding this level of integrated industrial and energy capability, moving this quickly, without institutional oversight, is exactly the scenario Thomas spent his life trying to prevent."
"Prevent for what reason?"
"Because he watched what happened when a handful of families controlled critical industrial technology after the war, with no accountability to anyone. He helped build some of that system himself, early in his career, before he understood what he’d been part of. The Industrial Continuity Agreement — the five-family structure — was his attempt to correct course. Instead of one entity controlling strategic capability outright, it would be held collectively, with succession conditions designed to filter out anyone who hadn’t proven they could be trusted with it."
"The independent industrial control requirement," Adrian said.
"Exactly. Thomas didn’t want an heir who inherited power passively. He wanted someone who’d already demonstrated, through their own judgement, that they wouldn’t misuse it."
Adrian was quiet for a moment.
"And the observer programme?"
"A check on the check," Vane said. "In case the succession process itself was ever corrupted — a family member coached to appear qualified without actually being so. The observers were meant to verify independently, outside the family, whether a claimed heir genuinely met the standard Thomas cared about, not just the paperwork."
"Which is why you were testing whether I’d defer rather than continue," Adrian said to Halloway.
"Yes. Continuing without hesitation would have suggested someone chasing power for its own sake. Deferring suggested judgement." Halloway glanced at Vane. "For what it’s worth, most of us think you passed."

Adrian moved to the workbench and began going through the notebooks methodically. Most were technical — material formulations, failed test results, calculations in the same careful hand as the notebook in his coat.
Near the bottom of the stack he found a slim folder, newer than the rest, the paper less yellowed.
He opened it.
Complete technical specifications. Diagrams of the fourth-layer geometry Miriam’s team had never been able to reproduce. Manufacturing tolerances. Material composition. A full account of the process Thomas had spent twenty years developing and never finished commercialising — not because it didn’t work, but because he’d made a deliberate decision to stop, worried about exactly the kind of concentrated capability Halloway had just described.
At the bottom of the last page, in Thomas’s handwriting: If someone reaches this point having built what I refused to finish, they will have already proven they understand something I didn’t at their age. Give them the rest. It’s theirs to decide what to do with.
Adrian read it twice.
"This is everything," he said quietly. "The complete specification. Everything Miriam’s team has been missing."
Daniel looked over his shoulder. "That solves the fourth-layer problem."
"It solves it entirely." Adrian closed the folder carefully. "This isn’t a mystery anymore. It’s a research archive."
Vane exhaled slowly, something in his posture finally loosening after what looked like decades of held tension. "That’s the first time anyone has said that sentence about this place."
"How do we shut the reactor down properly?" Adrian asked. "Not urgently — correctly, so it doesn’t need to keep cycling unattended for another fifty years."
"There’s a proper decommissioning sequence," Vane said. "I know part of it. The rest should be in the documentation upstairs, in the control room we didn’t reach."
"Then that’s the next job. Not tonight — tonight we get everyone out safely and let the venting cycle finish on its own, which your instruments upstairs suggested it’s designed to do without catastrophic failure as long as nobody interferes with it further."
Halloway nodded. "That’s accurate. The system is unstable when disturbed, not when left alone."
"Then we leave it alone until we can bring in people who know how to decommission a fifty-year-old experimental reactor properly and safely." Adrian looked around the small workshop one more time — the drafting table, the hand tools, the maglev-suspended prototype that had started an entire hidden industry decades before its time. "And we take this."
He held up the folder.

They climbed back to the surface without incident. The venting had slowed by the time they reached the courtyard, the mechanical cycling settling into something steadier and quieter, exactly as Vane had predicted once nobody kept poking at the system.
Daniel’s phone found signal again the moment they crossed back into the main hallway.
"Jamming’s stopped," he said.
"Because there’s nothing left to hide," Halloway said. He looked at Adrian. "The others outside will stand down. I’ll need to report what happened tonight to the remaining custodians. Some of them will want more than my word that you’re what Thomas was hoping for."
"Then arrange it properly," Adrian said. "Not in the dark, not with people surrounding a courtyard. A meeting. With Vane present, and with whatever documentation your programme actually has."
Halloway considered that, then nodded once. "I can arrange that."
He turned and walked back toward the treeline, and within a few minutes the figures who had been moving around the grounds all evening had simply gone, as unremarkably as they’d arrived.

Adrian stood in the entrance hall with the folder under his arm and looked at Vane.
"You’ve been carrying this for twenty-three years."
"Most of it, yes."
"Why didn’t you tell me everything at once, back in London?"
Vane looked genuinely tired for the first time all night. "Because I’ve spent two decades being paid to protect a secret, and old habits don’t dissolve the moment the reason for them stops applying. I’m sorry for the pieces. I should have trusted you with the whole thing sooner."
Adrian looked at the folder in his hands — the complete specification, the missing fourth layer, a research programme Thomas had built and deliberately left unfinished until someone proved they were ready to finish it responsibly.
"We have a great deal to talk about," he said. "But not tonight."
Daniel appeared beside them, phone already to his ear. "Car’s confirmed working again. Whatever was jamming it is gone." He glanced at Adrian. "Miriam’s going to lose her mind when she sees what’s in that folder."
"She’s earned it," Adrian said.
He looked back at the estate — the old stone facade, the western wing with its collapsed section already being cordoned off by the security team, the quiet grounds that had, an hour ago, felt like the edge of something incomprehensible.
Now it just felt like unfinished work, waiting for the right people to finish it properly.
He got in the car.
The folder sat on his lap the entire drive back to London, and for the first time since Daniel had first mentioned the words Origin Records Division, Adrian felt like he understood exactly what he was holding.
Not a mystery.
An inheritance that finally made sense.
