The first thing Adrian did when he returned to London was refuse to open the folder.

Daniel noticed.

"You’ve been carrying that thing for three hours."

"Yes."

"And you haven’t looked inside it again."

"No."

"Why?"

Adrian loosened his tie and dropped into the chair opposite the conference table at Calder’s headquarters.

"Because if Thomas Sterling spent twenty years deciding that information shouldn’t be released until someone was ready for it, I’m not going to spend three hours on a motorway deciding I know better."

Daniel stared at him.

"That might be the most responsible thing you’ve said all week."

"Don’t get used to it."

Daniel smiled.

The office around them was almost empty. It was after midnight, and the upper floors of Calder House had settled into the strange silence that only appeared after the last executives left and the cleaning crews finished their rounds.

Through the glass walls, London stretched beneath them in scattered points of light.

Adrian placed the folder on the table.

For several seconds neither man touched it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

"Miriam."

Adrian leaned back.

"Put her through."

Daniel answered.

"Miriam."

The voice on the other end was already moving too quickly.

"Is he there?"

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"He’s here."

"Put him on."

Daniel handed over the phone.

"You’re awake," Adrian said.

"I’ve been awake since you disappeared into that estate."

"That was several hours ago."

"Exactly."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"How bad is it?"

"Depends what you mean by bad."

"Helios."

Miriam exhaled.

"The test system behaved strangely after you left."

Adrian’s expression changed.

"Define strangely."

"The self-stabilisation effect jumped again."

"By how much?"

"Twenty-three percent."

Daniel sat forward.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"That’s impossible."

"I know."

"Did you change the manufacturing parameters?"

"No."

"Material composition?"

"No."

"Temperature?"

"No."

"Current density?"

"No."

"Then what changed?"

There was a pause.

"Nothing we can identify."

Adrian looked at the folder.

"Run the test again."

"We already did."

"Same result?"

"Almost."

"Almost?"

"The second run was higher."

Daniel stood.

"How much higher?"

Miriam hesitated.

"Thirty-one percent."

Silence filled the office.

Adrian slowly picked up the folder.

"Shut the system down."

"What?"

"We’re in the middle of the test series."

"I know."

"I didn’t say it was a failure."

"Then why shut it down?"

"No."

She looked at him.

She did.

Miriam lowered the page.

"No."

"Exactly."

Daniel entered the room carrying three cups of coffee.

"Did I miss anything?"

Miriam looked at him.

"Your dead billionaire ancestor was apparently worried about geopolitical consequences."

Daniel placed the coffee down.

"That sounds about right."

Adrian took one.

"He’s not wrong."

Daniel sat.

"Neither are you."

"About what?"

"Your companies."

Adrian’s expression became serious.

"Which governments?"

"Britain formally. Germany through a ministerial channel. And Nigeria through a senior economic delegation."

Miriam looked between them.

"Why?"

Daniel gave a humourless smile.

"Because Helios stopped looking like a battery project about six weeks ago."

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"Orion’s autonomous systems have attracted attention. Aether’s communications infrastructure is being reviewed by regulators. Atlas’s logistics network is now large enough to affect regional supply chains. And Helios has demonstrated energy-storage performance that several ministries have classified as strategically significant."

"Classified?"

"Not officially."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning people have started using the word strategic in meetings where they previously used the word commercial."

Adrian leaned back.

That distinction mattered.

Very much.

A commercial company could be negotiated with.

A strategic company was watched.

A strategic company could be regulated.

Restricted.

"A meeting."

Daniel walked into Adrian’s office without knocking.

"We have a problem."

"Which one?"

Adrian leaned back.

"Who owns it?"

"Maybe two hours."

Daniel nodded.

"Unknown."

"Six months."

Adrian stared at Halloway’s face.

The man had told him the custodians had been monitoring him.

That much was true.

But this suggested something else.

Halloway hadn’t simply been watching.

He had been involved in discussions about Adrian’s succession before Adrian even knew there was a succession to inherit.

"Daniel."

"Yes?"

"Don’t confront Meridian."

"Why?"

"Because I want to know how much they think they know."

"And Halloway?"

Adrian looked at the Sterling folder.

"Leave him alone."

"You’re sure?"

"No."

Daniel went silent.

Adrian looked at the photograph one more time.

"That’s why we’re going to watch him."

The call ended.

Adrian placed the phone beside the folder.

For the first time since returning from the estate, he understood that the underground facility had not been the end of the Sterling problem.

It had simply made the battlefield visible.

Helios had given Calder a technological advantage.

The Sterling archive had given Adrian the means to push that advantage much further.

And somewhere between the two sat Meridian, governments, old custodians, and people who had been studying the Sterling succession long before Adrian knew he was part of it.

He closed the folder.

Tomorrow, Calder would begin the fourth-layer programme.

Tonight, Adrian had something else to investigate.

Because a man who claimed to be testing whether Adrian was worthy of Thomas Sterling’s inheritance should not have been sitting across a table from Meridian six months before Adrian ever knew the inheritance existed.
