Chapter 1 - Waking up to a strange world
Opening my eyes, I reached out and covered my face with my hand. When I opened my eyes, I found the sight a little strange. A rather thin and smooth arm with rather chubby fingers.
Where am I?
I looked around and found myself in a rather plain looking room with very few decorations. Then I went to look at my body that I found strange in the first place.
Rather petite arms wearing a long sleeve outfit that was a rather dull pink. Puffy cuffs made to look like little monsters with small comedic red eyes. Then I felt a rather strange sensation at my back. A black tail sprouted out of what seemed to be my tailbone and moved according to my thoughts.
"Who am I?"
As I spoke that, a sudden wave of memories flowed into me and I suddenly found out who I was and that I reincarnated.
" I am Alice Mir Devir, the daughter of the current Demon King and my father has put me in house arrest for unknown reasons. The previous owner of this body constantly craved for her father's attention and after a long time of receiving nothing and finally decided to allow a mysterious figure to occupy her body. The price is that the one who occupies her body has to find out why she was treated this way."
That should be it. Although I muttered all of that out loud, I knew from Alice's memories that no one ever wanted to near where I was. I don't know why, but that is how it always been.
Looking through her memories, I found that this world was similar to the stories of swords and magic and that there were humans and other demihumans in addition to my race of demons. When I tried to recall memories of myself before I became this form, I felt a sudden sting and nothing came out. Only some terms and their relative meanings were given to em at random points.
Taking the time to sort all of this information, one piece of information stood out to me.
Rummaging through the small bookshelf in this princess's room I finally found what I was looking for. Brushing off the dust on the book, I read the book's title.
"An introduction to magic."
Although I did not remember much of my previous life, one thing I did know was that magic and things like it were a simple fantasy not like here. Since that was the case, I already knew what I wanted to do now that I was here.
"To become the greatest mage the world has ever seen!" I shouted from my room. Thankfully there were no signs that anyone heard my outburst. Heaving a sigh, I began to look through the books with rapt attention.
When I finished, I had a general idea about the concept of magic. Basically, there is an extra element in the world known as mana. Many races can absorb this mana and store it in a mental space known as the user's Meditation Space. Each particle of mana can grow to follow different elements based on both the environment as well as factors like affinity to a certain subject.
Each person has a specific affinity to a specific type of mana. Thus each person cultivates and absorbs the types that their body best matches. Then using this mana as fuel, people can order mana into specific patterns called spells that allow the mana to burst out power beyond each particles' individual prowess.
The first thing I had to do was to see what elements that my body had. Looking through my memories, this girl only had an affinity for Dark Magic like her dad, but I wanted to check it for myself.
Thankfully, checking this information on my own was actually quite feasible. There is a simple way to do so that people from ancient times could do. First I had to calm down and start meditating.
Now, when I hear the word meditation, I always think of sitting crosslegged and thinking of mental images in my mind, but this was just preliminary meditation. All I had to do was calm down and start controlling my inner mental strength to sense my surroundings. Then the 'color' of the mana I sense would be the type of magic that I had access to.
Color was in quotations because sensing with my inner mental strength did not allow me to see per se. It just allowed me to feel their general color. It's a hard sensation to describe.
Sitting on my bed, I expected that it would be difficult to calm down due to my current soul and everything, but I was able to surprisingly get into the groove quite easily.
Closing my eyes, I calmed down and breath softened as I started quietly staying in contemplation. My speeding thoughts began to slow down and I looked into my body. Then I started to feel and unusual sensation in my body.
Trying to take control of that sensation, I eventually started to get the hang of it and spread that sensation outwards. Then it was like I was filled with a whole new pair of eyes.
Tiny particles hovered in the air and I was able to sense their so called color.
Blue, red, purple, green, yellow. All kinds of color surrounded me. Let alone the dark purple that belonged to the Dark element, I saw almost every color that I could think of.
After a while, I left that state in exhaustion. Simply sensing the colors is good at my current state of development.
Looking into the space in front of me, I finally opened what I should have when I first awakened in this body.
Status Screen
Name: Alice Mir Devir
Title: Daughter of the Demon King, Reincarnated One
Race: Demon
Level: 3
Magic: Dark magic (1)
Skill: Reading (1), Etiquette (1), Appraisal (1)
This status screen was a special part of this world. In it, a lot of information that I found in my memories was easily summarized. Most of the words here made sense and were obvious at a glance.
the only ones that might cause some confusion are the title Reincarnated One and how the levels of my magic and skills are displayed.
The title Reincarnated One seems incorrect since I did not really reincarnate, just took over this body. Maybe there was just no better fit and so I received this title?
As for the level of skills and magic, it goes from 1-10 and the fabled Limit Break state.
At level 1, the user has just started and only has the most basic capabilities when it came to the magic or skills displayed.
From level 2-4, the user could be said to be quite experienced in the subject.
Then at 5-7 the user wold be considered a master at the subject.
8-9 are the theoretical limit that most lives can reach in their lifetime. Those at this level would usually have their names engraved throughout history as experts of their specific subject.
Level 10 and Limit Break have their own category in terms of skill. At the level of 10 in any skill, the user is said to have mastered every aspect of the subject and are able to do many mind boggling things in respects to the subject. Limit Break is as the name suggests. The user breaks out of the framework of the system and walk their own path.
The level of Limit break has not been seen for eons and just words of the possibility have continued to this day.
For now, my level one proficiency means that this girl has only barely scratched the surface of her potential. That means I have more to tap into already.
Looking into the book again, I specifically recognized all the different colors in the atmosphere and when looking into the textbook it means I have an all element affinity now.
While not rare, most who have this affinity can't see as many particles of a specific color well. That is unlike me as I was almost flooded by the sensation. Because of this, I should look into all the elements and find one to specialize in.
Learning them all at once is a good way to become simply useless in a bunch of categories. Once I have some proficiency over one, I can then focus on another.
Now looking at the list of elements in the world, there are the basic suspects.
The basic elements like Water, Fire, Wind, Earth are all there. Then there are composite elements based on two of the basic ones. They are Steam, Ice, Mud, Lightning, Lava and Sand. In addition to that, there are also other elements not included among those like Light and Dark. Then there are the special three elements of Space, Time, and Fate
Looking at my affinity, I seem to have a similar proficiency in all of them so it all depends on what knowledge my Father has and what level of access I have to them.
Good timing, as lunch was being provided and handed over from a guard outside. Although they are unwilling to speak to me, they can receive my comments and ask for stuff for me. So I went ahead and asked if we had a library and if I could read there.
"Hey, is there a library here and can I read the magic books in there if there is?"
The guard was taken aback with my comment and style of speaking. After a moment, he motioned for me to wait in place as he headed off likely to ask my dad.
Since that was the case, I sat in place and ate my meal in peace.
Waiting seemed to take forever and after I was finished with my meal and neatly put my plates in proper order the guard came over with a slip. Handing it over to me, the slip said it was a library pass and it had a map on its backside with a simple map from my room to the library.
Thanking the guard, I decided I would head over once I finished this book on the introduction of magic first.
There is actually another book that also caught my interest, but I would bring it with me to the library to read. It was a book that paired with the Introduction of Magic and it was called the Introduction on Skills.
They were both made by a place known as the Sage Tower so I guess they should both be rather informative existences in the world.
Finishing the book, I had a general idea on the process of learning magic and meditation. There were also a few precautions that I remembered not to take lightly. First is that official grimoires for learning a specific type of magic would be stained in that element. If you don't have that affinity, you can't tell if a book is the real deal so most people tend to focus on books with the affinity that they own.
Then there is the fact that higher level books have a higher concentration of mana particles of that type stained upon it. If the amount is to overwhelming for your level, then you should stay away from close contact with the book.
In this world, there are stories of young people finding a magic book of high level magic of their element and them buying it and then ascending to the sky in one leap to become strong men. This is in fact a fabrication. There are many cases where an unaware teenager obtains a book too high level for themselves and in turn get corrupted by the knowledge in the book till they become a mumbling idiot who can't speak properly. So it is indeed important to know your self and your own level.
The book specifically states that there are 5 levels to magic books.
Novice - Books specifically to get started on a set of magic. (level 1)
Beginner - Books for those with some level of familiarity with the subject. (level 2-4)
Intermediate - Books for those who have started to master their craft. (level 5-7)
Advanced - Books for absolute masters and pioneers of their craft. (level 8 & 9)
Peak - These are usually the research notes of well known and renowned powerhouses who have left a mark on history. (level 10)
Thanks to the status screen, the chances of getting turned into an idiot by a magic book has drastically decreased. All I have to do is to get used to measuring the amount of particles to the level of knowledge.
Finally, I headed out to the library so I could finally have my first foray into the studies of magic.
