Chapter 17 - Decision
Hearing about her story, Felicia paused for a moment. Although the situation was different, it was quite similar to what she had gone through. To be honest, it also seemed like it suspiciously and perfectly fit the same scenario she was in now.
Then it was the two of them watching her intently. If she showed any hesitation at this time, they knew that they had to bring her to their side. Because of the great peril that Alice could cause with her space magic, it only made sense to rope in as much support as possible to face her.
Seeing the two of them, Felicia then hesitated.
"You had fun with the rest of us before, why not join us fully? It is not like we would stop you from monitoring us. Even Mellie still informs the. church of our situation so you can too."
After hearing so much persuasion, she finally gave in and decided to try joining them on their adventure for a change.
So the next few days passed like a blur. Although the coachmen was a little surprised at the new addition, since he was already paid by the emperor he didn't really care who they added.
Every so often, the team would find a group of people in need and stop to help them. Because of the need to hurry they asked for her help and she obliged.
When they arrived at the town closest to the Warcraft Mountains, the coachman left them there and headed back to the capital.
After our farewells, we then headed out to the town when we were invited to sit at a nearby cafe. When we did, a person had passed us by and passed a note to the hero. After a few sips, we paid for our drinks and headed to more secluded area.
Like any place like this, such a place would be taken by people with more negative looks on life so after educating the crooks in the area, the hero then finally opened the note for all of us to see.
In the note, there were exact directions to head to the fortress and the information on who was there. Unfortunately, there were no clues of the Demon King being there that they have found so he is likely hiding away in the lair of the other general, Levia.
The fortress belonging to Levia would be more difficult to find so it would be best to take care of this demon general while we had the chance.
Surprisingly, they have not fled as of yet. It is not known whether the demon general Malica was simply that confident and simply stayed there knowing the hero was coming, or if they had not noticed our infiltration at all. Either way, it made it easier for the party to take down the general while they were here.
After one final preparation session, it was finally time to head to the goal. The way was not lead by the spies of the Empire simply because they had different means of stealth compared to what was available for the hero's party.
"Speaking of, is that carpet what gives you your stealth ability? But I remember seeing you floating on a simple body pillow when I first revealed your presence, Felicia?" The hero asked her on the way to the fortress.
The other girls were also quite curious on that question and turned to look at her.
"Well, those two times were a bit different. Alice had made plenty of tools and weapons before, but when she found that they did not improve her in anyway she simply tossed them away. I found them so I have been using them quite a lot. Indeed, the carpet does have the ability to fly and become invisible, but she also made plenty of other tools with duplicate effects. The pillow has the ability to conform to the perfect shape desired by the wielder at the moment and the ability to fly, but with no stealth. The stealth I had at that time was do to a light refracting spell owned and perfected by Alice."
In the rest of the hero party's head they made a note that that kind of spell was in her catalogue.
Then they started asking her about Alice and her life.
Although she did not say anything about her other spells and strengths, they learned a bit more about her in general. Like how she truly loves exploring the depths of magic and how she actually felt bad about taking the body and how their relation of father and daughter broke down so much.
That got the hero party curious so they asked her about that topic. They had heard the demon king's message for her and heard a little about it and wanted to know more of what happened.
Then she retold the situation fully from both sides and all of them looked down on the ideas and thoughts the demon king had.
"He neglected her so long and even those sent to take care of her were told to be especially cold to her and never speak to her and he expected her to forgive him?! What crazy logic. Although it seems they made up, I don't think such behavior warrants any forgiveness! No matter how heart broken you are, you can't just isolate the child further! He may have lost his wife, but his daughter lost both a mother and father for so many years!" The witch said exasperated.
"Even if he eventually tried to get back with her, what he did before could be considered a bit much. And even if he wanted to blame your creator for her dying, who was the one who pushed her to that state in the first place?" Was muttered by Mellie who was feeling heartbroken for all sides.
"Well, that is just the way things go I suppose. I have been told of other potentially even more heartbreaking stories recounted by nobles past before many of those families were expelled by my father. I suppose that it just gives more reason to face him, but don't get too hung up on it. Emotions should be kept for after battle. For now let's prepare to destroy Malica and take down their fortress."
With her calm words, Vanessa pulled the twos attention over to in front of them. After this next stretch of land, we would reach the fortress where our target was located.
Arriving close enough to see the fortress for themselves, it was a rather breathtaking view. Rather than the traditional view of a fortress being a castle, this one looked like a giant ring around the largest mountain in the mountain range. From a distance, the ring resembled clouds as the place was already at a layer where clouds could be visible.
Seeing this, we all knew that there was a reason the Demon King could rule such a large territory so easily.
Even if we were to slay the Demon general, the difficulty of trying to fight and destroy such a place would be nonsensical.
"Woah." We all said as we stared at the place full of wonder.
Then we shook our heads from our daze and started to think about how to enter. After a while, we first decided that we should get a rough understanding of the actual structure of the building first. After all, we have only seen the outside ring of the fortress. Who knows how we would enter or where we would even go to find the general.
So first Wendy and Felicia were sent out to scout out the place. Felicia was mostly sent to help keep Wendy hidden as she tried her best to draw a diagram of the place as well as to take her away should they be discovered.
So they took their time exploring and eventually mapped out everything. Then it all ended up revealing something rather depressing for the hero party at large.
"What did you find Wendy? Is there a place we can infiltrate from?" Vanessa spoke. She showed a little urgency hoping that it would not be like what they thought.
"Sorry, it seems that every troop in the fortress knows how to fly. So the only entrances that could be found were all from flying in the sky. There are metal bars hanging the ring in the air, but they only reach the bottom of the ring and so we would need to climb all the way up and would likely get caught halfway through." Wendy reported to the group. This summarization revealed one of the biggest weaknesses in this Hero Party.
They had no means of flight.
This was one of the reasons that they faced Volcanica quite comfortably. Even if he was a Volcano Dragon, his wings had degenerated so much that he could not fly. Thus he became an easy target to take down.
In contrast, the water and air generals were generally more difficult to face. With Water magic, Wendy could help them breathe underwater to an extent, but it is most certainly not at the level that Levia can.
And of course, Malica was by far the most troublesome to deal with. Having high Aerial mobility made it easy to escape from the hero party in an instant.
Maybe this is the true reason that Malica was confident staying in the fortress even when Volcanica had been slain?
Well, now the group was kind of stuck in place. Of course, they could ask Felicia for help and she would be pretty willing, but they did not want to rely on handouts from her to win. Even amongst each other, they did not want to rely on things like the money and status of Vanessa or the influence of the witch clan that Wendy belonged to.
So the tempting magic items that she had would most certainly enter that category of external aid.
Because of this, what could they do next?
Well an answer happened to arrive at the opportune time. From the nearby mountains, several groups of aerial magic beasts came out and attacked the fortress. Although they failed in there assault, it gave the party an idea.
As a demon general, he would only seek out other demon companions to be their partners. So magic beasts of the aerial variety would only be killed, turned away, or imprisoned. Thus we can simply find a group of aerial beasts that have a grudge with them and fly upon them and assault the fortress.
So our next plan was decided and the group started heading out to the mountains around.
Because of the large distances between each mountain, it took quite a while till we found a mountain that was not too close to the fortress. If it was too close, the flying magic beast would have likely been beaten away so we had to go quite far.
Then the hero party began searching for the right size and strength of magic beast to use as a mount to their destination. The first mountain was filled with small grouped up parrot like birds who did not fit the requirements whether in strength or size. So we decided to leave that mountain and begin searching the rest.
Encountering all kinds of beasts of various kinds was quite eye opening. It was mostly since Felicia had no experience facing any of these species so she took the extra time remembering their appearances for later reference.
In this time, the party had encountered three species that met the size requirement, but their strength was rather lacking.
If there were no other options, they would be forced to use them as mounts for this venture.
But there was still one more mountain that was remaining in the area. This one was rather secluded away from the rest and when the group all arrive there it almost seemed completely silent. This was far different from the other mountains that were so full of life.
It only became apparent the reason why when we reached the top of the mountains.
