Chapter 18 - Taming the Wyvern and Raiding the Fortress!
In the center of the top of the mountain was a flat area now covered in blood. In the layers of dried blood was a reptilian figure panting roughly covering a large area.
When she saw it, Mellie wanted to go up to it and heal it, but Luke quickly stopped her from acting rashly.
"Why are you stopping me? It is in so much pain, I should go and heal it." Her eyes flowed with compassion for the injured animal. If it was alive and kicking then maybe it would radiate a more fierce energy, but as it was injured and spawned out on the ground it seemed like the dying embers of a candle.
"No matter how down and out it is, we must respect the honor and pride of a dragon like it. Look, it has already locked on to us." Just as Luke said, when she turned her eyes to the wyvern, they were blazoned open and scanned every part of us. When it saw that there were no wing like appendages upon our bodies, it relaxed a bit but still kept an eye on us.
Seeing that it calmed down a bit, Luke then slowly walked up to it with both hands raised and came to a position a few feet from the wyvern.
"Hey, you must have been injured by the guys in the fortress. We also want to enter and fight them as well. Can we help to heal you and work together with you to fight into the fortress?" He said to the wyvern. As a subspecies of the legendary dragon race, it was obvious that they would be able to understand the Hero's words.
Staring into the Hero's eyes, seeing the resolve in them it relented and lowered its head.
Only when he saw the nod did Luke then turn to Mellie to ask her to heal the wyvern. Walking up to the beast, although it tensed while she reached near the wounds on the wyvern, she gently soothed it as she healed its wounds with her light magic.
After some time when the wounds were practically recovered, the wyvern looked at the girl with surprise as it then tried to raise its body and flap its wings.
Stiffly at first, after a few moments, the wyvern seemed to get the hang of it as its movements became much more flexible and agile.
Then she turned around and headed into the cave and came out with a bunch of cracked eggshells. After some worlds communication, Luke seemed to understand what the wyvern wanted to relay and nodded.
"If we find them, we will help you save them." He responded to the large beast. With a grateful nod, the wyvern then returned the shells carefully as he explained to us the silent promise that he made with the Wyvern.
"So there is an extra side mission of saving the Female Wyvern's kids as well? Alright. Seems like something you would do." Felicia said nodding her head at his actions.
The other members of the party of course agreed to the idea. When they heard that this wyvern was a mother who had lost her husband while fighting the demons in the fortress and wanted to rescue her children that were taken away, it was only a matter of course that the righteous Hero party would help her especially when she would be helping them arrive at the place in question.
When the wyvern returned, it then roared to declare its departure as it motioned the hero party to ride upon it. The others all rode upon it, but Felicia took her pillow and floated to its side.
"Can you keep up with the flight of a wyvern with just that body pillow magic tool?" The Hero asked.
With a nod, the wyvern gave a disgruntled huff as it then flapped its wings and flew to their destination. Following right at its tail was Felicia riding upon her pillow.
Because of her Space magic, she had the ability to place a mark on a position and connect with the pillow so that the spirit in the pillow would automatically follow after the mark. this made these kinds of maneuvers quite simple in Felicia's mind.
But for the others, seeing this scene was quite a shock. Most magic tools have only been developed to the point of having the most basic elemental capabilities so a tool like this was unheard of. There were only really two scenarios of tools like these which were Ancient tools found from ruins that were relics from a time long gone as well as within the Witches Covenant.
Among the witches there have been many trying to bring back the ancient era of magic tool dominance with minimal success so far.
This all added to the amount of stupidity that each Demon King in each generation was. If any of them had paid attention to the magic knowledge outside and compared it to the knowledge in the Library, they would have noticed the massive disparity in knowledge breadth and depth.
Of course, only a girl like Alice would be both interested and reading and talented enough to make these things come true.
Either way, this was all once again another big shock to the hero party and wyvern ones more.
Before, the only flight that they saw her have was low altitude flight at walking speed and decent stealth which could be explained through ancient artifacts, but knowing her circumstances it only made it more clear how much of a genius this Daughter of the Demon King was.
While they were surprised, it did not stop them from constantly moving towards their destination. Of course, such a large flying beast would be easily seen by any sort of creature or person nearby so the demons could be seen assembling a distance away.
Because of the difference between walking and flying, the group was rapidly closing in on their destination and were soon to be battered by the demon's counterattack.
First were a group of Birdmen who flew into the air and shot out feathers from their wings as projectiles in an attempt to stop the beast. Unfortunately for them, the now healed and prepared Wyvern rushed through using mana covering its scales in order to bolster the defense of the wyvern further so it ignored their attack.
There were also those that targeted the Hero party above the wyvern as well which they were also able to deflect with Vanessa as their vanguard.
"Ha!"
A golden barrier arose that blocked the progress of the feathers. This barrier was what was known as a Warrior Skill and is the Warrior equivalent of a spell. Of course, such a thing was not interesting to Alice so she never bothered to study them, but she did have a clone within the Akashic Records study them.
Of course this golden barrier was a part of the skills owned by the current Aloph Empire so it meant that it was not in the Akashic Records Database, but simply seeing it from the back got it recorded from Felicia point of view.
With the simple dissolution of the first wave of attacks, the next wave of demons started to strike at us. Rather than the simple feather strikes belonging to the Birdmen, it was now a bunch of archers with enchanted arrows firing at us.
These arrows were enchanted with some sort of flame and when combined with the feathers made a dazzling conflagration that surprised most of us on the wyvern.
Of course, as one of the victims of their antics previously, the Wyvern was already prepared to deal with such attacks by launching its own wind barrier.
With the help of the wind magic it deployed, the wyvern was finally able to reach within melee range of the various flying creatures.
Quick slashes and tail strikes sent many of the Birdmen combatants flying. Then the Hero party turned to Felicia and said.
"Leave the General to us. In the fortress, we have a much easier time navigating. Can you help make sure that the Wyvern can get out of this alright?" The Hero said to me.
It was fine since she did not want to participate in the direct fight between the Hero party and the Demon General. So she just kept them within her spatial range and hopped on to the wyvern and placed her hand on its back.
The moment it did, the wyvern seemed to be able to see things from a whole new perspective and easily dashed in between all the feathers that launched towards her afterwards.
With such a demonstration, the hero party could leave at ease and dropped onto the fortress to face Malica.
Meanwhile, laying on the wyvern, Felicia put earmuffs to block her hearing as the wyvern began to quickly rampage throughout the whole airspace.
What Felicia did earlier was connect her spatial senses with that of the wyvern so it now had full 360 degree vision for quite a distance and adding the effect of wind magic to it, the wyvern was able to keep the whole aerial battalion busy and prevent reinforcements from arriving in the fortress.
Using their combined efforts the Wyvern blocked the entrances of the fortress with her magic which lead those troops to have to deal with the Wyvern directly. Unfortunately, dealing with an angry wyvern mother who lost her cubs is a tragic way to go. Especially when the perception of the beast was amped to this level.
After dealing with about half the troops, it seemed their group leaders had gone impatient and joined the fray. Among them were three creatures commanding the aerial troops of the fortress.
First was an old and majestic bird folk who excelled in rapid archery using his feathers and even better with a bow at hand. Shooting various prismatic arrows filled with various effects to trouble the Wyvern.
There was also something like a Gargoyle that seemed as stiff as a statue but was surprisingly able to fly and charge at the wyvern. Unlike the other arrows and feathers, this gargoyle would have been able to deal severe damage should it be able to land a hit. Of course, normally with the slow start up speed and predictable movements, the wyvern was able to spin circles around the Wyvern casually.
At the end was a rather surprising addition to this squad of commanders. It was a large Vulture that would be the second largest flying creature that I have seen.
Of course, that beast did not arrive alone. With it, there was a large swarm of various smaller flying beasts that were sent to be cannon fodder by this aerial army.
Because of the large gap in numbers, the wyvern soon found itself to be outmatched and it looked to the one riding it for help.
It was not until the wyvern got hit and the got bumpy that the girl stopped paying attention to the fight going on within the fortress.
Looking at the clouds of opponents ahead of her, she sighed and thought about that mission that the hero had given her.
"That hero might not have known how many of these things there were in the fortress. They are swarming like flies! Well alright, I did not expect I would need to use some of these but oh well."
Reaching into a spatial pocket, she then pulled out an unusual tool from her pocket dimension and then telepathically signaled for the wyvern to get down onto the ring fortress.
Although not knowing what she was going to do, the Wyvern relented and dived towards the ring fortress as she then opened the umbrella she pulled out of the space of hers.
"I always wanted to use these suckers but I never got the chance! Alright RainMaker 1.0! Show mw what you got!" With her shout, dark clouds quickly covered the sky above them as thunder glowed among them.
